***First time on vinyl reissue (previously CD only) of MARK VAN HOEN's 1998 masterpiece presented on a deluxe 2xLP. Playing With Time perfectly showcases the lush and deep environments that can only arise from Van Hoen (LOCUST, SCALA, SEEFEEL). Melody Maker called it "A Mesh Of Loveliness". The Sunday Telegraph described it as "The perfect, spacey chill-out album", and The Sunday Times had this to say: "A sound that at it's best has a positively spiritual quality about it". Other accolades include Sleazenation—"At the cutting Edge" Computer Music "A melange of jerky, cut-up sounds, stretched out ambience... that owes more to Far-Eastern music than to Steve Reich". And lastly, HiFi World felt "The sound scape is so deep and diverse that it's accessible to anybody into laidback beats and soothing, beautiful noise". Guitar, bass, and Wilkinson’s voice are all treated through a variety of outboard and software effects, gently blurring into one another. ***Lost LP from 1977, rebuilt from original tapes, by the creator of BLACK DEVIL DISCO CLUB. A fourth album called Orbit Ceremony, produced just a few months after remained in his home studio and never saw the light; sentenced to almost 40 years in the devil’s vault. By chance, while working on the reissues, Bernard Fevre recently found the original lost tapes of Orbit Ceremony, including the multi-tracks, which he remixed and remastered himself. Spacy moogs, weird clavinet, and cosmic analog drum machines: it’s all here. ***Medical Records in collaboration with Crispy Nuggets returns to Italy for it’s 59th release. Hailing from Bologna, Italy in the late '80s, EFFETTO JOULE were brothers FLAVIO and VALERO BIAGI, MASSIMO CHERICONI and VALERIO TASSINARI. Drawing on influences of the early '80s new wave and synth pop scene and armed with an arsenal of synthesizers (Korg Poly-800, Roland alpha juno-1 and juno-2, etc) from the mid '80s, Effetto Joule crafted their own sound. With the exception of the few of the tracks, almost all were home recorded during the years of 1988-1990. Effetto Joule self released a couple of cassettes entitled Ultraviolet A and B as well as one 12” single in 1989 on Top Sound Record (recently reissued by Mannequin Records with bonus material). ***Medical Records releases the first full length LP in 5 years by LA’s GENEVA JACUZZI. To say Jacuzzi is a multifaceted artist would be an understatement. She is well known for her uncompromisingly obtuse synth-driven pop and one-of-a-kind performance art that is comprised of one time only spectacles and installations. Her works have been presented in famous art institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA and numerous other venues across the globe. She has developed a very focused cult following in the art AND music scenes. She was originally well known for her multitude of self-released home recordings but also released a full length Lamaze in 2010 on the Vinyl International to much acclaim. Not to mention her track "The Sleep Room" featured on The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol 2. Technophelia is the culmination of a hybrid of DIY and professional studio recordings (with the help of esteemed producer CHRIS COADY) that resulted in this exquisite album. Features the soon-to-be-hits "I’m A TV" and "Cannibal Babies." Lovers of unique and left-field wave such as Gina X, Ronny, and the like will be transfixed by the raw, oozing newness of it all. A Derangement Of Synapses by Red Fetish

Red Fetish

A Derangement Of Synapses
Medical Records

***Medical Records presents a hand-picked selection of home recorded demos from Stoke, UK’s RED FETISH. Armed with a Korg 770, Yamaha CS10, Korg Rhythm 55, a guitar here and there and a Teac 244 four track recorder, the band consisted of NEALE JAMES POTTS and MIKE RICHARDSON. Red Fetish featured members from ALL THE MADMEN and DECADES BY NIGHT and later evolved into THE CONE and TIGER CLUB. These tracks were recorded in 1982-83 and all culled from various cassettes that the band recorded. The tracks for this special release (technically not a reissue) were hand picked by Medical Records out of a large demo collection (often multiple versions of certain songs). Red Fetish was heavily influenced by UK late '70s new wave as well as rock staples such as Pink Floyd, Beatles, and Hawkwind. The songs are built from very minimal and sparse synth lines yet the overall feel is interestingly dense and warm. This collection will absolutely be another piece of the highly intriguing and ever-deep well of minimal synth acts such as other contemporaries Oppenheimer Analysis, Twilight Ritual, Iron Curtain, and the like. Pressed on 180-gram heavyweight half and half colored vinyl (red and white).

***Medical Records is very pleased to present the debut album by U/V LIGHT. U/V Light sounds more than a bit like Cloudland Canyon at times. This is because it is the first “solo,” effort from KIP UHLORN of CC. Kip played, sang on, engineered, mixed, and collaborated with GABBY WEISS on this new recording. Eschewing standard German comparisons that CC usually receives, U/V Light often sounds like either early electro or dance-pop but without the typical blueprint so commonly replicated these days. Kip’s rockist tendencies make this recording more interesting and fresher than those usual reference points. However, after Gabby’s vocals kick in, some of the band’s influences can be discerned such as Desire, or Uffie fuzed with Sylvester, Bobby O, Jonzun Crew, Space “Magic Fly”, etc. One could also draw some comparisons to Primal Scream’s “Screamadelica,” Seefeel, or Craig Leon at times. Despite hints at motorik tempos and/or beats., U/V Light is more of a pop affair. It is also not a simple continuation of Cloudland Canyon. Dance-pop seems the clearest reference point here, but Cenotaph does not have a standard dance beat feel. Recorded quickly, the record has a consistent sonic approach that makes individual tracks sound like a suite of songs. Presented on high-quality 180-gram heavyweight colored vinyl.

***Medical Records in collaboration with Crispy Nuggets is proud to present a collection of tracks by POST INDUSTRIAL NOISE. PIN was an “audio artsemble” conceived in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio by the trio ROBERT CRISE JR, GERALD F. NELSON and DANA RIASHI RITCHEY. They started on a drum machine, guitars, and vocals but quickly evolved to one member on synths and two guitarists on occasional synths. Robert Crise Jr maintained a studio titled “The Center For Contemporary Realism” where he conceived most of the lyrics for PIN. Gerald F. Nelson was a local performance artist, and Dana Riashi (OSU art student) claimed to be the “idea-mediator” between Robert and Gerald. Robert produced a flexidisc of PIN material through an Ohio Arts Council grant and distributed it through the OSU art tabloid “Dialogue”. The accompanying article from Cleveland’s Spaces Gallery noted PIN to have “redigested their input from influence bands such as Tangerine Dream, PIL, and Kraftwerk, to produce their own unique sound”. PIN performed mainly in galleries and occasionally clubs at the time. They produced a cassette release and were soon feeling the pressure to specialize towards more concrete art performance or club venues. It was this pressure that soon led all activity of PIN to a strangling halt unfortunately. The output of PIN could be described a more experimental/minimalist offshoot of new wave with pleasant synth sequences blanketed in rich synth tones. Fans of Near Paris will obviously draw comparisons, but the overall feel of PIN is a bit...

***Medical Records returns to Germany for another piece of the Neue Deutsche Welle story with the reissue of the one and only album by TSE-TSE. Long out of print from it’s original 1983 pressing on Neuland Tonträger, it is due to be heard again. Tse-Tse were CLAAS MELHOP and CLEMENT HULSE. The duo met in Hamburg at a disco. While Claas was a medical student and trained flutist, Clem was a school drop out playing in a German punk band (HERMANN’S OGRIE) which he joined when he was only 16. They hit it off and spent a lot of time listening to early Human League, Virgin Prunes and other oddball stuff from the time. In between hanging out at trendy bars at some point, Clem took a tiny toy Casio keyboard over to Claas’s place. They began improvising and playing through the home stereo. The drum machine sounds were simply whatever was built into the cheap gear, and everything was recorded on a cassette tape player. The songs came together quite easily with key changes and rhythms evolving quite instinctively. A friend of the band ran an independent record label and insisted they go into the studio. They recreated their homemade tunes and added some vocals, sax, bass, and effects. They did use a Korg MS20 and Roland Drumatix which they now had access to. The album is a very interesting hybrid of minimal instrumentals interspersed with unique more melodic tracks with vocals. There seems to be an almost prog...

Happiness And Contempt / Montage Morte by Null And Void

Null And Void

Happiness And Contempt / Montage Morte
Medical Records

***Medical Records presents a very special double A side reissue of Fullerton, CA band NULL AND VOID. Null And Void recorded three albums (1980’s Happiness And Contempt , 1982’s Montage Morte and a 3rd in 2012). Both of the 1980s LPs have relatively short playtimes, so we have decided to reissue both in their entirety on each side of this reissue. Hailing from a very diverse musical scene, Null And Void forged their own sound fusing elements of new wave, post-punk, cabaret and less characterized roots. Both of the LPs have gone long out of print and have become collectible with the resurgence and interest in post-punk and new wave. Different from the often colder synth and wave scene, Null And Void headed into a more punk sound with heavier overtones and quirky hooks. The opening track “All The Old Humans” displays poignant synth lines before the track takes off into a total rock anthem. “Un Sedatif Ce Soir” is a standout track on the 1st album with twists and turns chock full of smoldering synth lines, jerking rhythms, and other surprises. The 2nd album (or other “A” side if you will) “Montage Morte” displays the evolution of the band just 2 years later after the debut. A slightly different mood overall, it has a more DIY home recorded feel. The opener “Motorcycle Song” is very catchy and tends to keep the listener humming it their mind for days to come. “Japanese Forest” is a gorgeous simple number with atmospheric...

***Medical Records in close collaboration with Disko Obscura Records presents a special split 7” showcasing one new track each by ((PRESSURES)) and ROLADEX. ((Pressres)) hails from New Orleans, LA. They craft their unique futuristic icy tracks on a museum’s worth of analog synths and drum machines. This release follows their first LP on Disko Obscura entitled Casting Shadows. Their contribution “The Voices” is a propulsive and dripping with synth textures track featuring vocoded vocals. Roladex (a veteran of Medical Records already with their Anthems For the Micro-Age LP) hails from Seattle by way of Texas. Blending girl/boy vocals with catchy pop hooks drenched in a seductive melancholy, Roladex also uses a plethora of vintage gear. “Glass Statuette” is their new track for this 7” and features their signature sound with a bit of an evolution into Moroder-esque cascading arpeggios. Fans of both artists will surely want this in their collection. Features original artwork for the “double A side” on foldover insert style by both artwork that nicely complements the music contained therein. Pressed on high quality transparent yellow vinyl. Mastered by MARTIN BOWES at the Cage, UK. Limited Edition.

***Medical Records is very proud to present the long overdue reissue of Shoulder Voices, the seminal 1993 debut LP released by ROLLERSKATE SKINNY. Originally released on Placebo Records, (a subsidiary of Beggars Banquet), it has been long out of print and rare to find on vinyl format. Rollerskate Skinny, formed in Dublin by KEN GRIFFIN, JIMI SHIELDS, GER GRIFFIN and STEPHEN MURRAY in early 1992, released two 10” vinyl only EP’s, Novice and Trophy, prior to the release of Shoulder Voices. Novice was included in NME’s Top Ten New Band releases for 1992 while Trophy received Single of Week in the NME. The band’s name was taken from The Catcher In The Rye (“She’s quite skinny, like me, but nice skinny, roller-skate skinny.”). The album, co-produced by GUY FIXSEN (LAIKA), received many accolades upon release including (CMJ Magazine Album of the Month). The band toured with many great bands of the time including Pavement, the Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. Hard to characterize, Shoulder Voices is a true masterpiece, featuring elements of severely catchy pop, heavily distorted guitar and keyboard sounds, weird experimental passages and other unclassifiable styles. Over the years, and with revived interest in the early ‘90s sound, this record is becoming increasingly popular with a new cult following, joining the legions of fans who were obsessed with it the first time round. The opening track “Miss Leader” is typical of the journey the record takes; it starts off with a jangly pop sensibility before a wall of...

***The debut full length release of KLINE COMA XERO. A self-titled LP influenced largely by the sterile and isolated iconography of authors such as Philip K. Dick, William Gibson and JG Ballard (from whence the bands name is derived). Formed in 2012, Kline Coma Xero is a group whose work embraces elements of early minimal synth wave with distinctively thoughtful lyrics and evocative melodies. Kline Coma Xero's TONY WILLIAMS has had his roots planted in various projects in the past, spanning a realm of styles from experimental noise, tape loops and early industrial. Using a writing style that employs the use of hardware sequencers driving analog instruments rather than computers, Kline Coma Xero produces a uniquely oblique interpretation of past-meets-present in modern electronic music. Previously Kline Coma Xero debuted in 2013 with the track "Left Behind" which was included on the Circuit D'Actes 3 - La Forme Lente label compilation which is the opening track on this LP. The 2nd track “Rewind” is amazingly catchy and reminiscent of the best hybrid of analog synth pop overlaid with Front 242 style vocals. Other standout tracks are the 2nd side opener “Mannequins” with it’s razor sharp lead synths as well as the dark and brooding “Casualty Ward”. Kline Coma Xero will certainly appeal to fans of analog minimal synth, EBM, and the more melodic side of industrial as well as specific acts such as Fad Gadget, Suicide, John Foxx, or Martial Canterel. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight colored splatter on opaque white...

***Medical Records presents a reissue of one of Germany’s most interesting records. The German duo ALOA only made one album in 1982, but it is one of the most peculiar and innovative records of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement. Long out of print, somewhat obscure, and very expensive, this record is due for an official reissue. The duo consisting of AL KANZ and MATTIAS BRENDEL both grew up in Kassel, Germany. Though both had different tastes of music, they fused influences and injected them into their own unique blend when they purchased Roland 606 and 808 drum machines plus a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5.  After much development and evolution, the Aloa project came to life. The album explores a whole spectrum of textures, moods, and atmospheres. Ranging from dark complex synthed-out tracks to diverse instrumentation-laced almost Krautrock motifs, this album is definitely one of a kind. From the commanding first track “Weisser Wal” with it’s almost Bryan Ferry style vocals to the atmospheric “Banane Zitrone,” the twists and turns are endless. This is a very sultry record as well evidenced by the band’s constant obsession with sexy women who occupied their time. Definitely will appeal to fans of The Residents, Neue Deutsche Welle, and anything and everything that lives in the outer reaches of synth territory. Sadly the record was overlooked and misunderstood by the press and radio stations alike likely due to it’s obvious unorthodox and experimental interpretation of synthpop. Restored and mastered from the original master tapes by...

Anthems For The Micro-age by Roladex

Roladex

Anthems For The Micro-age
Medical Records

***Medical Records presents it’s second contemporary artist release with ROLADEX. Imagine Kraftwerk playing Steven Merritt songs.  Roladex was formed in Texas by TYLER JACOBSEN and ELYSSA DIANNE. Producer/Member, Tyler Jacobsen holds an MFA in Electronic Art and this becomes apparent as they find lyrical and musical inspiration through the films of David Cronenberg and John Carpenter, the works of authors such as J.G Ballard as well as video artists such as Vito Acconci and Nam June Paik. Using an arsenal of analog instruments, Roladex nostalgically borrows ideas from music of the past to carefully craft a unique brand of futuristic-mechanized pop, with an emphasis on songwriting and layered production. Weaving sparse, sequenced arpeggios into fuzzy bass and bubbly melodies to create a bed of sound where they layout a somehow bright melancholia. Part minimal synth-wave, part dream pop, Roladex fits nicely with other non-traditional pop acts such as Ariel Pink as well as Synth contemporaries like Police Des Moeurs and Black Marble. With previous singles on Night-People Records, AMDISCs, and Beko, Medical is proud to present their debut LP.  At times their music cold and moody, at others it is bright and dimly warm. Themes such as nuclear war, cosmology, false memories and technology as the “opiate of the masses” become apparent as the listener plays through the LP. The opening track “Anthem For The Micro-Age” sets the tone with dreamy atmospheric synth textures and interwoven male and female vocals.  “Love Surgery” is chock full of pop hooks and synth...

Undisciplined Strips Of Emotions by Illustration Sonore

Undisciplined Strips Of Emotions
Medical Records

***Medical Records presents the release of its first contemporary artist with the Paris-based ILLUSTRATION SONORE (I/S). The duo, consisting of DASZ (also in DOLINA and AME DE BOUE) and CHRISTINA (aka FROE CHAR), expertly craft dark and atmospheric songs laced with unbridled passion in the context of synth-laden melodies, dominant percussion and pensive vocals. I/S started in 2010 and have played many concerts in Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy. I/S uses variations of electricity to control oscillators and frequency modulations. Best described as synth-gaze, dark-wave, or no-future pop, I/S recorded this full length LP in 2013. The opening track “Ulysses,” sets the mood with uncompromising intensity and passion with serious low frequency tones and catchy synth drenched hooks. The dreamy and brooding “Our Bodies” starts the B side and is a definite standout tracks. The wonderful and melancholy pop track “Flying Lights” is also included on the LP and was previously featured on the lovely compilation Circuit D’Actes 3 on the French La Forme Lente imprint earlier this year. The relentlessly apocalyptic “Cannibals” is yet another magnificent track worth mentioning here. For fans of EBM/synth-heavy industrial crossover, lovers of Cabaret Voltaire, Chris and Cosey, modern synth-wave and the like, these tracks will not disappoint.  I/S has no fetishism for the old nor obsessions for the new, and they draw their inspiration in synth pop and surrealism. Presented on high-quality 180-gram ultra-clear heavyweight vinyl. Features bonus LP insert with lyrics. Front cover design by Temple Vengeance.  Limited edition.

***Medical Records (again) in collaboration with Crispy Nuggets blog is proud to present a compilation/reissue of the UK underground duo LAUGH CLOWN LAUGH. Composed of SAM FINDLAY and DOMINC O’BRIEN, Laugh Clown Laugh hailed from the northeast Somerset town of Frome (100 miles west of London). Though the band only had one actual released track (“Feel So Young” featured on a 1984 101International 2LP comp), the duo recorded many more tracks literally in their living room in the early 1980s. Inspired by early 1980s synth pop, they were able to purchase early Sequential Circuits and Korg synths as well as a TR606. What resulted from these home recordings on tape are some of the most young at heart, sincere, and amazing synthpop the world has never heard. Due to lack of publicity/etc, these recordings sadly have been stored away until recently as a cult following has mounted after the attention and correspondence with Crispy Nuggets blog. In addition to the driving, infectious earworm that is “Feel So Young” (and the dub version), this LP is composed of 10 never before heard songs from those home recordings. All tracks have been transferred and restored from the original tapes with dazzling results. The album opens with the fitting “Feel So Young” which sets the tone and engages the listener to know they are in for a wonderful synthpop journey. The simplicity and focus on the lead synth tracks and percussion is what sets this collection apart. The tracks “Face To Face” and...

***For the first 7” record released by Medical Records, we are proud to reissue the long lost and out of print 7” by Disco Volante.  Disco Volante was essentially Terry Clarke (aka Terry Tanx) formed in London in 1982.  Inspired by the early Bond films and their soundtracks (Disco Volante was a yacht in Thunderball), Tanx played live in a number or small clubs between 1982-1986.  Using a small number of Roland instruments (TB 303, TR 606, MC-202, and SH-09), Disco Volante self released a cassette entitled “Traction in Rehash” now which is sadly lost.  In 1984, the 7” single “No Motion” with the same title as A side and “Click” and “Punishment Tank (Live)” as the B side on Catalyst Box Records.  Terry recollects that the recording only took 2 days, and the engineer had no experience with this style of music.  The end result has a very DIY aesthetic despite the use of a professional studio.  Unfortunately, the single was not commercially popular and received no publicity due to music press strike at the time.  The single began to gain cult underground popularity in the 90s and 00s with the resurgence of new wave which resulted in a spike in prices for the long lost single.  The track “No Motion” is a very catchy layered synthpop hit that is quite unique yet capturing the essence of the early 80s new wave sound very nicely.  “Click” on the b-side is a march-like track with propulsive synthetic bass textures and...

***The first in a series of unparalleled reissues originating from the crucial Survival Records imprint. Survival Records is a UK label now operating for over 30 years.  Formed in 1981 by ANNE-MARIE HEIGHWAY and DAVID ROME, early releases included such iconic releases as Tik & Tok, Play, Hard Corps, and Richard Bone. The first release in this series, is the work of DRINKING ELECTRICITY, the project of label curators Anne-Marie and David.  David Rome previously had worked with Martin Lloyd in the Analysis (later to be evolved into Oppenheimer Analysis). Drinking Electricity formed in 1980 and released two singles on Pop Aural before forming Survival which housed the rest of their output during their two years as a band. This double LP collection showcases Drinking Electricity’s full 1982 LP Overload, as well as compiling the band's multiple singles released between 1980-1982. Best described as a perfect fusion of minimal synth-based new wave with poignant, angular and stylized guitar-driven post-punk. Touching on sociopolitical topics intertwined into catchy, synth-heavy tracks that are also danceable, this collection will appeal to fans of early Gang Of Four, OMD, Fad Gadget, and the like. Packaged in double gatefold jackets with custom Drinking Electricity inspired artwork.  Inner gatefold jacket features a variety of pictures of the band during this period.  The release also features a bonus 2-sided insert with liner notes and interview of the band by DAVE SEGAL. Compass Kum’pas by Dalek I

Dalek I

Compass Kum’pas
Medical Records

***Originally released in 1980, Compass Kum’pas was the debut album by the Liverpool duo consisting of ALAN GILL and DAVE HUGHES. Also known as DALEK I LOVE YOU, their name was a fusion of the Daleks (famous Doctor Who villains) and the name Darling, I Love You which was an early idea for the band’s name by Alan Gill.  The early incarnations of the band featured DAVID BALFE (later in THE TEARDROP EXPLODES) and ANDY MCLUSKEY (later to form ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK). Alan Gill also was a member of The Teardrop Explodes at one point down the line. The LP was critically acclaimed but unfortunately flew under the radar in terms of revenue generation. Medical Records in collaboration with Dave and Alan are proud to present this seminal work on vinyl for the first time in over 30 years. The album can best be described as a pastiche of passionate synth-pop and highly restrained post-punk. At times very danceable pop is sharply contrasted with moody synth and vocal passages shrouded in a thick cloud of melancholy. The track “Destiny (Dalek I Love You)” is a highly catchy synth hit and was a 7” single at the time. “8 Track” tells the peculiar tale of the love affair with a piece of recording equipment. “Freedom Fighters” grabs you with sharp synth hooks and drags you to the dance floor. The cover version of “You Really Got Me” is a very stripped down and restrained interpretation with angular chopped guitar. ...
