New Releases

***Ottawa’s STEVE ADAMYK BAND returns with their 4th LP (released barely a year since the last one), Dial Tone, and it’s their best yet! For this release, SAB travelled to Oakland, CA to record with MATTHEW MELTON of Warm Soda/Bare Wires fame. Melton grew up in Memphis and that influence definitely shows on Dial Tone. While still plenty fast and catchy, Dial Tone shows the band dialing (ha!)  back a little on the break-neck punk/pop tempos of previous releases, with increasing nods to classic rock n’ roll form. If 2011’s Forever Won’t Wait was their “pop” album, and 2013’s Third was their “punk” album, let’s call this one their “garage” rock masterpiece! Features guest appearances from Matthew Melton and the PRIMITIVE HEARTS DANIELLE AGNEW.

The Isolationist by Krieg

Krieg

The Isolationist
Black On Black

***Recorded at Volume Studios in Chicago, the near hour long The Isolationist (2010) will challenge the listener with its primitive yet complex sound. It is the bands sixth full-length recording and first since 2006’s Blue Miasma. Working with producer SANFORD PARKER (Nachtmystium, Pelican, Yakuza), The Isolationist finds KRIEG further experimenting with sound. The rage and dissonance fans have come to expect from the New Jersey band emerges even more frenzied making the journey through this album far more intense than on previous efforts. The Isolationist features performances from guitarist JOSEPH VAN FOSSEN (NOCTUARY), bassist WREST (LEVIATHAN) and drummer CHRIS GRIGG (WOE). Krieg has been an integral part of the American black metal scene since forming in 1995. In addition to their full-length albums, including 2003s acclaimed The Black House (Terrorizer Magazine noted it as one of the ten most important American black metal records), Krieg has recorded and released numerous demos, split and live recordings. Fans tally more than 40 individual items as part of the bands creative efforts. In addition to Krieg, vocalist LORD IMPERIAL has several other band projects including N.i.l., APOTHECARY, SOUND LODGE and his doom band MARCH INTO THE SEA. He is also a member of TWILIGHT (along with members of Leviathan, Xasthur, Nachtmystium and Draguar). 180-gram limited edition pressing in gatefold jackets.

Purling Hiss - Tour Edition
Permanent

***NEW 2014 TOUR CASSETTE EDITION!!! “PURLING HISS is one of Philly’s Best! Purling Hiss is the side-project of Holy Mountain recording artists, BIRDS OF MAYA, guitarist MIKE POLLIZE. Birds of Maya are a full-on psychedelic rock band from Philly. Apparently, Birds just aren’t full-on enough to satisfy Pollize’s far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record, Pollize plays bass, drums, and guitar, relentlessly, as if he’s playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they’d risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent ‘em a new master and it sounds great.”—Permanent. Edition of 100 copies in grimace purple shells.

Modern Love

7 months on from TP#4, Demdike return with the 5th instalment in their ongoing research and development series - a double-headed monster split between gnarly reductions on the A-side, and industrial strength edits on the flip. ‘Procrastination’ edges through Grimey detritus and gunshot snares within a vast open space perfectly primed for that Demdike slow build. ‘Past Majesty’ on the flip offers up a feral take on some kind of cyber-industrial insanity, somewhere between Ministry and Powell - with a denouement which should probably come with a public health warning attached to it. All we’re saying is - watch yr eardrums.

Performed and put to tape at Estuary Recording Facility, The Seeker and The Healer constitutes the first collaborative work by Texas-based sound artist Cory Allen and Louisiana minimalist composer Duane Pitre. The album’s two side-long pieces were developed out of multiple improvisational sessions governed by predetermined rules, sourced from piano, bowed guitar, harmonium and 49-stringed drone harp (a custom-made instrument of Allen’s own design featured here on record for the first time).  In the context of both musicians’ discographies, these pieces occupy a unique and important place, synthesizing the strengths and compositional tendencies of each into a sympathetic and symbiotic whole. Pitre’s powerful, overtone-laden string work, documented on sterling outings for labels such as Important and Root Strata, is on fine display, augmented by the keen sense of pacing and attention to the finer points of acoustic atmosphere that typify Allen’s solo output. Both tracks go beyond academic minimalism, mining deeper and more personal terrain. The arc of “The Seeker” begins with contemplative piano clusters that are wed to guitar and harmonium drones, building to a dramatic crescendo and punctuated by percussive histrionics sourced from Allen’s drone harp. “The Healer” conjures a focused, mournful environment imbued with rich sonic lyricism by way of Pitre’s bowed guitar.  Operating as a duo, Allen and Pitre have found truly fertile ground, producing an album that stands as a radiant beacon in their already exemplary catalogs—a masterful record that proves to be distinct from their past releases and simply cannot be missed.

***Following the release of COLD BEATS Worms/Year 5772 EP via bandleader HANNAH LEW’s (GRASS WIDOW) Crime on the Moon imprint, Over Me is the Bay Area act’s debut album. Propulsive and taut performances from guitarist KYLE KING and drummer BIANCA SPARTA (ERASE ERRATA) bely Lew’s glassy vocal melodies. A cathartic album, Lew sourced difficult personal experiences to create an immersive lyrical world sometimes fraught with paranoia, anxiety and impending doom, and also an exploration of hope and imagination—themes felt ever more acutely by a native San Franciscan artist in the midst of tech boom cataclysm once again. Over Me was recorded by PHIL MANLEY at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco, and mixed and mastered by MIKEY YOUNG  in Australia. As a Crime on the Moon release, a percentage of sales benefit Charity: Water, an organization committed to eliminating privation in developing nations. A meditation on the duality of identity, “Mirror” rides tear-drop guitar leads into a buoyant chorus, then cascades mightily towards an exalted outro. It is the first of three album tracks to receive music videos created by Lew. Elsewhere, the menacing “UV” couples fetishistic imagery with instrumental vigor, while the dystopian subject matter in “Out of Time” finds Lew’s vocals entwined in the sky, on a swift ascent to space with only glistening notes in their wake. Seething with circuitous anxieties, even teetering at times towards terror, Over Me ultimately marvels in the face of staggering unknowns.

Since 2002, over the course of four studio albums and hundreds of live performances, Wolves in the Throne Room have refracted the transcendent and mythic aspects of black metal through their own idiosyncratic Cascadian prism, creating music intimately linked to the wild lands of the Pacific Northwest. Celestite embarks on a deeper excursion into the crystalline, synthesizer-driven domains that have long intrigued the band. With the aid of producer Randall Dunn (Earth, SUNNO))), Master Musicians of Bukkake), the band unearths a hidden soundscape only loosely tethered to their familiar sound, yet still unmistakably the work of Wolves in the Throne Room. As the album unfolds, an ocean-deep psychedelic soundscape coalesces, and a portal opens to the hidden world of magic only accessble through dreams, visions and music. Celestite came to fruition at Avast Studios in Seattle and the group’s own Olympia-based Owl Lodge, where they employed a mammoth arsenal of crumbling vintage synths and effects, a wind ensemble and the classic API and Neve mixing consoles. From the band themselves: “To make Celestite we delved into the subterranean sonics that are buried in the mix of Celestial Lineage. We isolated them, processed them and took this unearthed soundscape as our starting point. Upon this base we recorded an entirely new album. Some melodies from Celestial Lineage are recognizable, but these familiar sounds appear as ghosts, barely tethered to the original compositions. This new album is an unorthodox foray; a fully instrumental, experimental companion record to Celestial Lineage. We left some...

Days Of Being Wild by Kivel, Matt

Days Of Being Wild
Woodsist

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork. Days of Being Wild was recorded over the course of six weeks in the summer of 2013 with Paul Oldham in a small detached shed in Los Angeles. The album art features original drawings by Max Markowitz.  “I had worked with Paul on the last record I did, 2013’s Double Exposure, and I was lucky because he decided to move to LA right after that record was finished. My friend Brian Cosgrove has this house in the Echo Park hills, kind of a punk house where everyone who lives in it plays in bands. It’s got a front porch with a refrigerator on it and it’s got a one room shed in the back where bands rehearse. A lot of bands have rehearsed there over the years. Paul and I started meeting there over the summer and I would buy Paul beer. We drank whiskey on the first day, but I think we both got too drunk to do anything productive—well, at least I did, Paul’s from Kentucky, so he has an even higher threshold—so we switched to beer and things went smoothly from then on. I played most of the instruments, Paul played bass, and my friend David Kitz joined in on drums for two of the harder songs. Paul told me some great stories about all of the musicians he’s worked with over the years. He even told me the secret to I See a Darkness—Bunny Wailer’s ‘Blackheart Man.’...

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received a 7.2 rating from Pitchfork. The Skygreen Leopards’ latest outing continues the group’s tradition of skewed sunshine pop with lyrics focused on the bummer side of the eternal rock ’n’ roll summer. Donovan Quinn (New Bums) and Glenn Donaldson sing and strum tales of real and imaginary companions, delivering impressionistic rants about losing love, getting high or feeling uncomfortable. They record and mix straight off a nice tape machine run by Jason Quever of Papercuts (who also plays in the band sometimes, along with Jasmyn Wong and Nick Marcantonio) and resist the temptation to use digital erasers, preferring to leave in the mistakes and rough edges.  For those who have followed Skygreen Leopards since the psych CDR boom, came on board after their gnarled country opus Disciples of California, or are a newcomers to the Skygreen’s jangling world, Family Crimes is the perfect expression of their patented brand of blemished pop.

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  Fire of Love is the no-nonsense debut from blues-punk legends The Gun Club. Formed in 1979—when singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce taught a young Kid Congo Powers to play guitar—the band injects the Delta blues, rockabilly and ’60s garage with their own amplified fury. Originally released in 1981 on Slash’s sub-label Ruby Records, Fire of Love features the classic second lineup with Ward Dotson on guitar (replacing Powers, who left to join The Cramps) and The Bags’ rhythm section. Opener “Sex Beat” shakes and stutters through a dynamic slab of American rock ’n’ roll that reverberates throughout the album. “She’s Like Heroin to Me” is perhaps Pierce’s most famous paean to modern love, elevating him to raucous demigod of the underground. Take it straight from Chris D. of The Flesh Eaters, who (along with Tito Larriva of The Plugz) produced these sessions: “Fire of Love is probably the definitive record to come out of this roots revival movement. Several people have told me that record made them want to start a band and come to Los Angeles.” This long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Chris D.

A Minute To Pray A Second To Die by Flesh Eaters

Flesh Eaters

A Minute To Pray A Second To Die
Superior Viaduct

The Flesh Eaters is the name behind one Chris Desjardins a.k.a. Chris D. Taking his stage name from a 1964 cult film, Chris D. wrote for legendary fanzine Slash in the late ’70s and assembled the first of many Flesh Eaters lineups from heavyweights in the burgeoning L.A. punk scene. After releasing a ravenous EP and heart-ripping debut album, The Flesh Eaters unleashed their era-defining statement, A Minute to Pray A Second to Die. Originally released in 1981, A Minute to Pray brings together the greatest band in American rock history: Dave Alvin (Blasters) on guitar, John Doe (X) on bass, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on sax, along with Bill Batemen (Blasters) and DJ Bonebrake (X) providing the album’s trademark percussive backbone. Chris D. leads the group like a man possessed. Through a series of grotesque vignettes, his lyrical prowess and indelible growl stand toe-to-toe with the music’s powerful shifts.  From opener “Digging My Grave” (resembling a diesel-charged Magic Band) to the gothic groove of “Divine Horsemen,” each song is its own hairy beast. Inspired by African tribal music, ’60s garage-rock churn and Funhouse-era Stooges swing, A Minute to Pray remains (according to author / archivist Byron Coley) “the best rock record ever recorded.” This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Coley. Without a doubt, The Flesh Eaters will hypnotize a new flock of listeners in this millennium.

Clawing Into Black Sun
Profound Lore

Over years of self-infliction, abuse and debauchery, Minneapolis / Chicago metal band Wolvhammer has evolved into a ruthless killing machine. Following the acclaimed 2011 sophomore full-length Obsidian Plains, the group unleashes Clawing Into Black Sun, a volatile amalgamation of black metal, death rock and punk. Easily their best work to date, the punishing and accomplished album displays stunning musical development and a renewed sense of focus. Wolvhammer is planning an extensive series of live assaults in support of Clawing Into Black Sun. If their recent tour in support of Black Dahlia Murder and Skeletonwitch is any indication, exposure on the live front will bring them even more awareness and recognition.

Often imitated, never duplicated, the action-adventure rock pioneers ArnoCorps are back!  Returning to their patented “Heroic Symmetry” lineup, the legendary ensemble delivers two pump-inducing tunes that fight back against the Austroploitation films of the ’70s. From the opening chords of “Pumping Iron,” none can resist the call to increase their muscle mass to heroic proportions! The ballsy assault of “Stay Hungry” follows, and will leave listeners hungering for more. A Handful Of Dust

Topology Of A Phantom City
Ba Da Bing!

Topology of a Phantom City was a cassette originally released in 1996 on Bruce Russell’s glorious Corpus Hermeticum label, and this reissue captures the spirit of the original version by…well, by also being on cassette. For these recordings, the core members of A Handful of Dust—guitarist Russell (The Dead C) and violinist Alastair Galbraith—are joined by Peter Stapleton (Terminals, Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy) on percussion and synthesizers. The two sprawling paeans to the glories of improvised invention ride waves of menacing intensity and freeform scrawl.  This reissue is a refreshed opportunity for fans to hear one of the more obscure recordings in A Handful of Dust’s catalog. It also marks the first in a series upcoming cassette releases on Ba Da Bing—leading with their shiniest leg first.

With members of Sun Stabbed, Talweg and Nappe, this French group “draw[s] singing feedback from expiring amps and extend[s] moments of tense string-brut into colossal, slow-burning ascensions,” explain our friends at Volcanic Tongue. “Padding drums force the eternal upward vectors into waves of dreamtone as the group attempt[s] a flat-lined reconciliation between barbarous psychedelic drone, early music and single tone hypnotics. ***ART FINE was the duo of FABRICE BELLINI (electronics, vocals) and RUSH BLAKEMANN (guitar, synthesizer) from Turin, Italy. They met in art school and became friends, inspired by New Wave, dance and electronic music. They recorded their only single “Dark Silence” in November of 1984, which was released by Discomagic in 1985.  Fabrice programmed the electronic drums using SCI Drumtraks and added extra tracks on the Simmons SDSV. Rush played electric guitar and the Yamaha piano notes at the start of the song.  Guest musicians SILVANO BORGATTA and RICCARDO ROSA. The “da da da da da" voice effect was done by engineer GIGI GUERRIERI, who cut and spliced a tape rather than using a sampler, which was too expensive at the time. “Dark Silence” tells the love story of beautiful girl who Fabrice saw many times but could not reach. He called her Dark Silence, for her dark hair and eyes and the silence unwanted between them. The B-side features a remixed version with extended breaks and dubbed out bass lines and vocals.  Both songs are remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of the duo and that Art Fine logo in puzzle pieces. Each copy includes a double sided postcard insert with lyrics and liner notes by Fabrice Bellini.

Witch / Zanzibar by Helen

Helen

Witch / Zanzibar
Dark Entries

***BACK IN PRINT!!!  Dark Entries Editions reissue series continues with a double A-side of the first two HELEN maxi singles, “Witch” and “Zanzibar,” as a 4-song EP. Helen was an Italo disco studio project that consisted of various producers, songwriters, and vocalists from Italy in the 1980s. The first line-up included popular Italo producers PIERO CAIRO and MASSIMO NOE, known for their work with Joe Yellow, Den Harrow, Pink Project, and Dharma to name a few. They were joined by prolific Italo session vocalist ELENA FERRETTI. “Witch” was originally released in 1983 on Out Records, a label distributed by Discomagic Records. Signature Linndrum and Simmons drums create the driving rhythm track while Elena’s powerful vocals tell the haunted tale of a witch and her magic. In 1985 the second incarnation of Helen recorded the song “Zanzibar.” The vocal version was written by ENNIO RONCHELLI (Keyboards) and ROBERTO BAROCELLI (Guitar, Bass), with singer DANIELA PARATICI.  This line-up was heavily influenced by the ‘Afro’ movement made popular by DJ Beppe Loda. “Afro” refers to the Cosmic musical trend of slower disco records featuring African drums and rhythms. The “Afro Mix” of “Zanzibar” was produced by DJ DANIELE LOSI and ROBERTO LODOLA, with additional live hand drums and sticks by Nigerian percussionist GEORGE AGHEDO. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket from the "Witch" maxi single, featuring artwork by Elena Feretti. Walking In The Neon by Richard, Peter

Richard, Peter

Walking In The Neon
Dark Entries

***Dark Entries Editions is excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Italo Disco club hit “Walking In The Neon.” PETER RICHARD was the alias first adopted in 1979 by producer and vocalist WALTER BEINAT. His best known song was “Walking In The Neon,” released as a maxi-single on Italian label Good Vibes in 1985. For this single Richard teamed up with the production duo of GIGI FARINA and FRANCO RAGO, best known for their projects ‘LECTRIC WORKERS, DECADENCE, EXPANSIVES and WANEXA. "Walking In The Neon" was written by Rago & Farina with help from CHUCK ROLANDO, member of Italian disco group PASSENGERS. The track's arrangement was done by Italian disco pioneer CELSO VALLI who wrote club classics for Macho, Azoto, Passengers and Tantra, to name a few.   On the A-side is the “Club Version,” an uptempo classic that sounds like a dream encounter between mid-80s New Order and hi-NRG legends Patrick Cowley and Bobby Orlando. Clocking in at nearly 9 minutes, it is purely dance-floor oriented on an epic scale, with evolving hooks and melodies. The B-side features a shorter dub version with extended breaks and bass lines. Both songs are remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Pressed on neon orange vinyl, as it was when originally released in 1985.

Catune

***WOZNIAK, a solo band project by YUTA HOSHI, best known for his machine techno project TESTAV and also as a member of bands such as DALLJUB STEP CLUB, OUTATBERO and HABIT. Wozniak popped up when the post-rock scene was already at a saturated state, but has always kept the live instrumentation band sound with an techno influenced groove. Years of going out to night clubs, Hoshi came up with a connecting sound between the Berlin minimal of Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Berghain & Ostgut Ton with post-rock. No Export to Japan.

A Line In Wet Grass
Iron Lung

***“Our friend Jenn Pelly once described FLESH WORLD like this: ‘Imagine spiky melodies and washes of reverb mixed with the driving intensity of cold, post-punk spirit—skull-piercing guitar feedback, scratchy riffs, anxious drum builds, ominous moods, and bright guitar hooks when you'd least expect them.’ and we would be hard pressed to put it better than that.” Sounds by BRAD DERMANOUELIAN. Art by MARTIN SORRONDEGUY. First pressing of 500 copies on black vinyl packed in a heavy felt-weave jacket with a handy little insert and download.

Hemorrhaging Light by Gas Chamber

Gas Chamber

Hemorrhaging Light
Iron Lung

***Buffalo hardcore has always made a significant yet largely misunderstood contribution to the furthering of musical mastery. And Hemorrhaging Light is no exception. With the same 7 notes that everyone else uses, GAS CHAMBER have managed to completely turn mere punk music into a tense, trans-formative journey. Very rarely in punk do we get to have a complete life shift in the space of one album. This is incredible music. Sounds by JOHN ANGELO. Art by CRAIG SHEPERD. 500 copies on black vinyl housed in a heavy duty reverse board jacket with a bonus 7-inch flexi disc and download.

***Get grimy and low to sensationally uncomfortable hardcore punk music. NUDES lives beneath the street. Nudes is that dirt you swept under the rug. Well guess what, that shit doesn't go away. It disperses and envelops. Sooner or later your life will be nothing but dirt. It's all you'll be able to hear and think on. Nudes loves you. Nudes wants you in their world, under their rug, enthralled and crawling. All on black vinyl. Sounds by DAVE HARVEY. Art by MARYJANE DUNPHE. Packaged in a big foldout poster sleeve along with a digital download that includes the band-made video for "Bleach Stains." Includes a download.

***Continuing in Olympia's tradition of haphazard mangling, WHITE WARDS have finally managed to record a proper LP and it is one mean motherfucker. It's a gritty, nasty Mecht Mensch doing push ups in the Jan's Rooms basement. US hardcore played the way it ought to be. Ugly. Art and sounds by JAKE DUDLEY. 700 copies will grace the planet packaged in high quality materials made in the United States of America. Includes a download.

Beast Ep
Prank

***Blasting urgency with the song-driven edge of early ‘80s so-cal hardcore mixed at top speed with the brash edges of ‘90s East Bay punk, this second EP on Prank by Oakland's REPLICA features six tracks of powerful hardcore underlined with undeniable catchiness. Fueled by lighting-quick drumming, pummeling bass lines, ripping riffs, and snarling vocals, Beast EP was recorded at the end of the tour they did last year with Japan's Completed Exposition and it features songs that have long been staples of the band's live set. The EP was recorded at Earhammer by GREG WILKINSON and features a deluxe cover with multiple illustrations by local artist JON CARLING. Replica will tour the East Coast in late June / early July.

PRANK 145

***THE NEXT formed in early 1978 after seeing the Sex Pistols play their home town of San Antonio. They soon moved to Austin and became one of only a handful of punk groups in the area, helping to jump start a scene that would later be one of the most recognized in the country. The Make It Quick EP was released in short supply in 1979 and touted some of the fiercest tunes of the era including the classic "Cheap Rewards," which provided the namesake of this here label. Few realize the song wasn't originally intended for the EP. After dusting off some old 1/4" reel tapes we discovered not only an unreleased and forgotten song titled "Stupid Girls," but also a live radio appearance where the band discusses their upcoming EP with "Mr. Wonderful," "Monotony" and "Stupid Girls."

An Unkempt House by Flat Fix

Flat Fix

An Unkempt House
Not Not Fun

The transformation from trashed noise to tranced programming irks some technocrats but the truth is such shifts only highlight the kinship between these parallel modes of longform electrical activity; hypnosis and confusion can be achieved with or without drum machines. Newcastle transplants Nick Senger and Cooper Bowman both share storied pasts in improvisational amplifier damage as performers (Castings/Cistern Corrupt and Dry Mouth/Junk Sick, respectively) and label heads (Spanish Magic and Altered States Tapes), but recent efforts have focused on Flat Fix, their heavily dazed hardware duo. The pair oscillate between roles and equipment intuitively, allowing the pieces to accrue and unfurl across fried expanses of psychedelic repetition. Recorded straight to two-track tape at their home studio in Melbourne, An Unkempt House collects three recent worm-hole constructs for a half-hour factory tour through weirdly wired mazes of flatliner pulsing and melting signal dreams. Leave the club; enter the Unkempt House. Mastered by Australia's Prime Minister of Musicological Exports, Mikey Young. Double-sided silkscreened vellum artwork by Tokyo's Crooked Taper Ryo Kuramoto.     Flat Fix "Cerulean Blue" by NOT NOT FUN

Chunklet

***The perfect 'best of' collection from the undisputed kings of Cabbagetown! A 22 track, double album featuring recordings from their first four full lengths performed live at the Star bar during an extended residency in 1998 & 1999. "CHRIS LOPEZ wrote some of the most eloquent, sardonic, romantic, &, well, basically the best rock and roll songs of the 1990s. His band wrapped them in a florid southern reimagining of 1950s garage rock that always sounded sloppily, scarily out of control & yet dead serious.”—Will Sheff, OKKERVIL RIVER. Vinyl only release limited to 300 copies with download featuring bonus material.
