***BACK IN PRINT ON NEW SEA FOAM GREEN VINYL!!! GORDON WITHERS is a rock cellist. With a family tradition rich in miniatures and model toys, Gordon grew up admiring his grandmother's elaborate scenes filled with intricate details accompanying his uncle's expansive model train layouts. Keeping the art of recreation close at heart, he continues this family tradition with faithful, detailed cello interpretations of songs from his favorite bands. With his latest endeavor, Gordon takes on California punk icons JAWBREAKER with Jawbreaker on Cello. The album features recordings used in the highly anticipated and critically acclaimed documentary about the band, “Don't Break Down”. Of the new album and the band's influence, Gordon says “Not only did Jawbreaker's music influence thousands of bands, but they lifted the spirits of entire scenes and communities en masse. Their songs formed focal points for countless kids' formative experiences, enabling friendships and connections that would last forever. Jawbreaker's music saved at least one troubled teenage life in my own close circle and directly influenced nearly every musician I know. I am honored to be able to pay tribute to their legacy with this album.” In between in-demand studio work and solo shows, Gordon has performed in outfits such as OFFICE OF FUTURE PLANS (Dischord) and BELLS> (Zach Barocas of Jawbox) while currently playing with J. ROBBINS (Jawbox, Burning Airlines, OoFP, etc).

***The long-awaited IPO CD issue of the fabulously limited live album from emo's most beloved champions JAWBREAKER released on drummer ADAM PFAHLER's own Blackball imprint. Recorded at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre on April 30th, 1996, it's a beautiful mess of melody, angst, power, discomfort and emotion that runs the gamut of the band's storied career. Includes three songs—"Gemini," "For Esme," and one top-secret track that have never been released prior, as well a song that was not included on the LP version (currently fetching three figures in the auction scene). The undisputed masters of the sound invite you to their regularly scheduled heartbreak. Right on.

Compared to great three-piece bands like Jawbreaker, and the more contemporary Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms further develop their frantic version of ornate Midwestern power pop with this release. Cohesion between co-vocalists (CHRIS and BRENDAN) makes for the band’s best album to date. IN THE RED take up essentially where Gunmoll left off with “Board of Rejection”—some extremely powerful Jawbreaker-by-way-of-Hot Water Music-style punk. GIT SOME on the other side consists of NEIL and CHUCK from PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS, LUCIOUS FAIRCHILD (of a hundred Denver bands) and ANDY LINDSTROM. You ever see that picture of Van Halen hanging out with Black Sabbath? ***BACK IN STOCK!!! Received a 9.1 Best New Reissue rating from Pitchfork. One of the most popular and successful underground bands of the early- / mid-’90s, California’s Jawbreaker was comprised of Blake Schwarzenbach (guitar and vocals), Chris Bauermeister (bass) and Adam Pfahler (drums). The band melded raw vocals, a driving rhythm section and grinding guitar with complex song structures and literary lyrics, forging a distinctive style that has since, along with Schwarzenbach’s subsequent band Jets to Brazil, influenced a generation of independent music. By the end of 1993, Jawbreaker was in full stride. The band had completed a full US tour in the summer, played several shows that October with Nirvana, and was attracting significant major label attention. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, released in early 1994, was Jawbreaker’s third album. After the more “progressive” Bivouac, the trio had returned to a straightforward, poppier sound, and the resulting full-length is widely regarded as their best. The bulk of the recording was done by noted independent producer Steve Albini (though it is officially credited to Albini’s cat, Fluss). Following the mainstream success of fellow Californians Green Day and Rancid, Jawbreaker decided to sign with DGC. They released a final studio album, Dear You, before calling it quits in 1996. A feature-length documentary on the band is currently in the works.

***BANNER PILOT is the latest member to join the Fat Wreck Chords family. Hailing from the vibrant Midwest punk scene, these Minneapolis miscreants waste no time making fans of everyone within earshot of their irresistible refrains. What do they sound like? Well, if Jawbreaker, The Lawrence Arms, and Screeching Weasel had a drunken orgy while listening to Dillinger Four’s entire catalog, Banner Pilot would be the resulting illicit offspring. With a résumé boasting time in bands including RIVETHEAD and OFF WITH THEIR HEADS, Banner Pilot fits perfectly into the lexicon of modern Minnesota punk rock. With nimble baselines, thriving guitars, pummeling rhythms and gruff alcohol and cigarette laced vocals, Collapser exudes the passion of true punk rock. Originally recorded a year ago with Tim Green (Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses) at Louder Studios in San Francisco and assisted by Adam PfaHler (Jawbreaker, Blackball Records), the tapes were lost, found, transferred and ultimately remixed by Craigums (Love Songs, All you Can Eat) at Dutch Oven Studio in Alameda after Annie recorded more guitars and vocals to round out the sound. What you get is 100% sincere, aggressive yet melodic Bay Area California punk, drawing from regional bands of the past as well as those of Annie's past in Chicago-area Illinois, notably topped by Annie's raspy cigarettes-and-whiskey stained voice; falling somewhere between Joan Jett and the Avengers!

Whysall Lane began in the late ’90s as a solo project for singer and guitarist Richard Baluyut. While taking a break from his duties as songwriter and frontman for NYC indie-rock titans Versus, Baluyut walked the plank as a solo artist and began performing stripped-down sets of his “other” originals (and the odd Depeche Mode cover). He dubbed the new act Whysall Lane after a neighborhood street in his hometown of Detroit. After moving to San Francisco in 2001, Baluyut hooked up with ex-Jawbreaker drummer Adam Pfahler and SPCA Cat Behaviorist Mikel Delgado (Wussum*Pow, The Little Deaths, The Cinnamon Imperials). While sitting through the seventh inning stretch of a Giants vs. Mets game, the three decided to revive Baluyut’s solo material in a full-on band setting. After selling out countless telephone booths and playing alongside such luminaries as Sleater-Kinney, Mission Of Burma, Imperial Teen, and Jets To Brazil, the band headed into the studio to hammer out their set. They couldn’t have been happier with the result: indie-rock for people who hate indie-rock.

forgetters: as we are, so shall we be. In the spirit of national historical amnesia, the scrappy, enormous Brooklyn band continues its mission to master its immediate moment through the occlusion / collapse of events prior and subsequent. Originally touted as a “9/11 denier hoax,” the group went on to surprise even itself by losing its mind on its tragic-glorious 2011 European tour. Surviving members Kevin Mahon (Against Me!) and Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil) went to Baltimore, Maryland, in late 2011 / early 2012 to record this eponymous full-length with J. ***Steel Pole Bath Tub was formed in 1986 by Mike Morasky and Dale Flattum in Bozeman, MT. The duo relocated to Seattle where they met drummer Dorothy Kent... ultimately relocating as a unit again to San Francisco shortly thereafter. The Skull Tapes contains the first released Steel Pole Bath Tub recordings with the band's solidified trio lineup of Morasky, Flattum and Kent. This trio would serve as the lineup for the band's entire career. The Skull Tapes was originally released on cassette tape in 1987 and has become a collector's item both because of its rarity, but also its content. The band quickly followed the release with a string of classic albums on Boner Records, and they played shows supporting Nirvana, Killdozer, Jawbreaker, The Melvins, The Flaming Lips, Hole, Sonic Youth, ETC. Re-pressed on vinyl!! Has been OOP since 2014! New price. Originally released in 1991 by Lookout! Records, the Shit Split reached many a punk rocker, inspiring a legion of kids to fuck shit up! And now, after being unavailable for 18 months, this classic is back in print thanks to the granddaddy of all US punk labels, Alternative Tentacles. Blatz and Filth exploded out of the East Bay scene at 924 Gilman Street, home to Operation Ivy, Green Day, Crimpshrine, Rancid, Jawbreaker, and hundreds more. Blatz (featuring past and future members of The Gr'ups, The Criminals, Dead and Gone, and Subincision) took a raucous, slightly more melodic sound mashed with hair-raising female/male vocals, while Filth (formed out of the ashes of Isocracy, The Vagrants, and Crimpshrine) featured razor-gargling vocals over super punk guitars. Both bands lived the life of chaos and disorder, getting arrested for nakedness or being assaulted by brick-wielding suburban tweakers. Somehow, in the studio, the two groups harnessed the destructive power of their live shows (and lives), producing a classic slab of pure East Bay punk fucking rock! Both bands live on in spirit today, if the countless patches still worn by mohicans and crusties around the world are any indication. The LP contains the original version of the Shit Split: eight songs from Blatz, including their signature "Fuk Shit Up" and a cover of Fear's "I Don't Care About You," and seven songs from Filth, including "Scarred for Life" and their...

Brat Curse debuts their second full-length, and first for Anyway with the self-titled “Brat Curse.” Formed in 2014 in Dayton, Ohio by Brian Baker, Justin Baker and Chris Mengerink, Brat Curse takes their cue from a long line of Ohio guitar bands such as Gaunt, Guided by Voices, Connections and Swearing at Motorists. The band members stick to a well worn Ohio pattern of playing in a variety of bands, as Brian plays in Dana (Heel Turn Records) & Sega Genocide (Just Because), his brother Justin also plays in WV White (Anyway), Chris plays in Good Shade (Dirtnap) and they welcome new comer Joe Camerlengo (Van Dale, Counterfeit Madison, Blanket Boys). The sound of Brat Curse fondly recalls the snotty spark of Guant without the late great Jerry Wick’s assholish-ness, as well as Jawbreaker and other fondly remembered bands that like guitars. The self-titled debut album by Dead Sound is out now on 1-2-3-4 Go! Records. The guitar-driven power pop quartet—whose sound is reminiscent of bands such as The Replacements, Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du, and Teenage Fanclub—was produced and mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer Chris Dugan at O2 Oakland. Dead Sound’s release follows the band’s first year performing throughout the west coast including supporting several sold out shows for bands such as Billie Joe Armstrong’s side project The Longshot and other beloved Bay Area bands. Formed in the fall of 2017, Dead Sound is: Mark W. Lynn (Dear County, Uranium 9 Volt, The Devil’s Own, Monsula), Bill Schneider (Pinhead Gunpowder, The Influents, Monsula), Mike Goshert (Fifteen, Harvest Theory, Monsula), and Mack Narragon (Melba Cults). Energized by Monsula’s run of shows including supporting Jawbreaker’s first two reunion performances and headlining the Lookout Records / 924 Gilman thirty-year anniversary festival, Schneider, Lynn, and Goshert began writing new material. Through a stroke of luck Lynn met Narragon, bonding over a conversation about George Jones. New songs were fleshed out with the rest of the band and thus Dead Sound was formed.

***After several years of relentless travel up and down the West Coast circuit, Oakland’s Smokers has finally completed their blistering 15 song debut album The Rat That Gnawed the Rope. Inspired by favorite bands like The Stranglers, Minutemen, and early Replacements, Andy Asp (Nuisance, The Pattern), Cyrus Comisky (Black Fork, Drunk Horse), Jim Nastic (Talk is Poison, Year Future) and Omen Starr (St. James Infirmary) met up with lead engineer Phil Becker (Pins of Light) at San Francisco’s historic El Studio to put together the songs that became The Rat. The sessions progressed swiftly, and sonically define the band’s tough but thoughtful compositions. Highlight tracks include the driving ‘The Irish Tenor,’ ‘East of Oakland,’ and the reflective Covid-era song ‘The Strand.’ Fans of garage rock, East Bay punk, pub rock, and vintage street rock will find something here in this succinct, powerful collection. Smokers have played with The Avengers, Jawbreaker, Samiam, Subhumans, Murder City Devils and countless others.

***Good things come to those who wait, and in the case of Liverpool’s Good Grief, the wait was worth it. The band first appeared back in 2013 via a series of split 7”s and an excellent EP on Odd Box Records. HHBTM loved them, excitedly pairing them up for a split single with like-minded band Eureka California, who then brought them over for an American tour. So you can believe us when we say we’re excited about the release of the band’s long-awaited debut album Shake Your Faith. Formed in 2012 by Liverpudlian guitarist/vocalist Will Fitzpatrick, bassist/vocalist Paul Abbott and drummer Matiss Dale, Good Grief released a handful of singles before real life took precedence and the band took a back seat in 2015. They never officially broke up, though, regrouping to play the occasional date, sometimes with big names like Wussy and Superchunk. Good Grief fully reactivated in 2018, and spent 2019 working on and off on what would become Shake Your Faith. They were all set to finish and release the album in 2020, but then…well, you know what happened. Shake Your Faith blasts the listener with a guitar rock that will sound quite inviting to fans of groups such as Superchunk, Sugar, and Jawbreaker. A little punk rock, a little indie rock, and a whole lot of fun. You’ll rock out to songs influenced by everything from mental health, the New York school of poetry, the films of Akira Kurosawa, Seinfeld, novelist David Grossman, and the end...

Vancouver power-trash trio Needles//Pins began in 2009 as an excuse for three friends to hang out. Two LPs and a handful of 7 inch singles later, the band has come a long way but are still, at its core, a few friends having fun. 2017 sees the band set to release its third LP Good Night, Tomorrow, its first on Mint Records. The record is a progression both musically and lyrically from their older material while still maintaining the hook-centric philosophy of their previous releases. The band has become legendary in Vancouver for wild shows and gruff but catchy punk rock melodies. It draws from classic punk roots like the wiry pop of The Buzzcocks and the gravely anthems of Stiff Little Fingers, but has a unique West Coast approach that would align itself with the catchiest of the Lookout! or Dirtnap Records catalog. Though none of the band’s songs overstays its welcome, you’ll find yourself humming one of their hooks days after seeing them play or hearing the record. Recorded with Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) in Vancouver at Rain City Recorders, the record shows an organic growth from the power pop of their previous two albums. Guitarist and singer Adam Solomonian’s voice is gruffer from playing hundreds of shows, and you can see a richer appreciation of the group’s influences such as Jawbreaker and the Replacements at play in the song writing. Tony Dubroy’s solid bass lines and Macey Budgell’s heavy drumming combine to form a powerful rhythm...

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Released by the Bay Area’s own 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, the two-disc Blu-ray / DVD combo pack edition of the Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk documentary features the full-length theatrical cut of the film (2 hours and 37 minutes), five deleted scenes and more. This combo pack is a must-have item for any music documentary enthusiast or fan of East Bay punk. The film explores Northern California’s pivotal role in evolution of punk rock—the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like the Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper, as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. This documentary features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The documentary’s cast reflects the deep renowned diversity of the creative community surrounding California’s Bay Area by featuring interviews with past and current members of 924 Gilman, Maximumrocknroll, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, Flipper, Green Day, Rancid, Lookout Records, Neurosis, Operation Ivy, Crimpshrine, Jawbreaker, NOFX, Primus, Metallica, Bikini Kill, AFI, Bad Religion, Guns ’N’ Roses, Fugazi, 7 Seconds, Dicks, Subhumans, and many, many more. Los Angeles-based outsider artists Sprain play downer music at cacophonous volumes. Their new album, As Lost Through Collision, unfurls threads of spidery ’90s rock (think Unwound, Duster, Slint, etc.) and is a complex and cathartic exercise in tension and restraint. Formed in L.A. in early 2018 by Alex Kent and April Gerloff, Sprain‘s initial home-recorded forays into minimalistic slowcore resulted in their self-titled EP (2018) that distinguished them from the lo-fi pack through visceral expressions of depressed life. Soon, guitarist Alex Simmons and drummer Max Pretzer joined, folding tumultuous noise rock, drone, and flirtations with the avant-garde into the band’s arsenal. Touring converged these explorations into Sprain’s current sound: pure 21st century panic strained through a wall of piercing, feedbacking guitar amps. Written at home and refined on the road, these five new tracks are parts monolithic and minimalist, manic and mellow. Engineered by Josiah Mazzaschi at The Cave (Built to Spill, The Jesus and Mary Chain) and mixed by Tim Green at Louder Studios (The Melvins, Lungfish, Jawbreaker), the music here retains its organic purity and captures the band in its truest state. While the noticeable persuasion from ’90s post hardcore and noise rock is palpable, this release takes cues from 20th century avant-classical such as Xenakis and Penderecki. The end result is freewheeling and urgent, dynamic and destructive, and Sprain is marked by an aggressive versatility that has been sorely lacking in recent guitar music.

***"The realization strikes quickly; A Spell For The Death of Man is an atypical force. The haunting, oddly naked guitar that opens the record—perfectly painted in the 'Solitude' referenced in the track's title—is stark. Desolate. Profound, even. Mostly, it's real. A single guitar. Two minutes of truth or consequences. That's all that Woe needs to bury the seed. The seed grows. That solitary guitar morphs into a fiery wall of blasting, but halfway in, man... the violent revolution begins. WOE's manipulator, XOS, breaks the song open, driving it into a storm of dust with thick riffage and insane drumming. This is full-on, fuck-you hitting, turning the tide into a headbanging, jawbreaking tsunami of blackness. A Spell... is absolutely massive, wreaking havoc in a manner that few (if any) USBM bands have previous."—yourlastrites
