After a well-received 7”, a lineup change, countless wasted nights, girl problems, spilled beers, cheap highs and the occasional tour, Guilty Faces return with their debut LP “Domestic Bliss”. A mix of early 80’s hardcore punk with the driving force of the Adolescents, Circle Jerks, Black Flag and Minor Threat, as well as the fervent melody of bands like The Replacements, Husker Du, and The Wipers, the band offer up ten songs about the joys of ruining yourself/life and the perils that follow. Snotty and poignant lyrics, hard and tuneful riffs and a great recording from Ryan Abbott (Social Circkle/Side Two Studios) make this LP a definite must for fans of hardcore punk and depraved personalities of all sorts.

***Hardcore punk band from Toronto, Canada founded in 2012. Featuring a very long ex-members list from bands you may know from the past—blah blah, won’t bore you with that. After releasing a 7” EP on Schizophrenic records and a follow up on Beach Impediment records, the band’s sound is fully realized on this new LP for Deranged/Cut The Cord. A furious mash up of hardcore punk sounds from the past with no concern for current trends. Vocalist JAY CHISAMORE delivers the goods through 16 storming tracks. No 10-minute nowadays style HC “mini LP” here, but a full length LP of unrelenting and enraged HC done for real.

SEDATIVES do it dark, desperate, and minimal. An archaic sound from the gothic ages of punk...when punk was catchy, but also dangerous. Going back to the three chord song, with downstrokes, vicious energy, and the two minute deadline. Sacred by the organ, it's night church in the post apocalyptic wasteland. Their first LP and follow-up to their debut EP on Going Gaga/P.Trash Records.

***One of the classics of the “Deutschpunk” scene of the late 70s and early 80s, here is a repress of NOTDURFT's 1982 self titled debut LP on Aggressive Rockproduktionen. Notdurft appeared alongside other German bands of the era like Slime, OHL, Beton Combo, and Vorkriegsjugend, though were a bit more varied and tuneful than some of the other aforementioned bands. Package includes a faithful reproduction of the original album sleeve, with archival photos and a band history (albeit in German) on the insert. ***"It's been a pretty good year for Mrs. Magician. Back in May, the San Diego indie band put out Bermuda, a record full of trippy and spacey rock music, exploring both psychedelia and the great history of surf rock. Today, they're premiering new single 'You'll Fall in Love.' It's a compact track, packing together a lot of atmosphere, hopefulness and happiness into rapid-fire riffs. Optimistic sentiments ('Someday I'll fall in love') quickly sour ('Turn on the television so I can numb my skull') while the guitars kick into overdrive. The band's pop sensibilities are undeniable, imbuing insanely catchy riffs with subtler elements and instrumentation. Exactly what a single should do."—Clrvynt

***THRAWSUNBLAT is a "Raw Folk & Melodic Black Metal" band from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, fronted by Juno-winning WOODS OF YPRES' final guitarist, JOEL VIOLETTE. The first album, Canada 2010, was released in late 2009 and featured Woods of Ypres frontman David Gold on drums. Following Gold's death in December 2011 as a result of an automobile accident, Woods of Ypres disbanded and Thrawsunblat became Violette's main project. He recruited RAE AMITAY (IMMORTAL BIRD) and BRENDAN HAYTER (OBSIDIAN TONGUE) on drums and bass for Thrawsunblat II: Wanderer On The Continent Of Saplings, which was engineered by Juno award winner SIEGFRIED MEIER. The same lineup recruited cellist RAPHAEL WEINWROTH-BROWNE (MUSK OX) and worked again with Meier for Thrawsunblat III: Metachthonia. "With Metachthonia they have created something near-impossible for the style: an album that’s equally ferocious, somber, void of pretense and utterly majestic.”—Metal Bandcamp. Plaster Falling was recorded at the same time as John Bender’s first album, I Don’t Remember Now / I Don’t Want To Talk About It. Released in 1981 on the artist’s own Record Sluts label, copies of Plaster Falling’s initial pressing came hermetically sealed in plaster (and later latex). Thus, listeners had to literally break open the record to find what’s hidden inside. Produced in relative isolation, Plaster Falling is a beacon of brilliance in the nascent minimal-wave sphere. Veering towards skeletal urgency, these recordings set bright analogue melodies against half-whispered vocals and expand Bender’s electronic cryptography thru a series of lone signifiers: “Station,” “Plaster,” “Women,” etc. As Bender explains in the liner notes, “I began to distance myself from the present and describe scenes as if in a movie – seeking concrete, terse, juxtaposed imagery.” This first-time standalone reissue is recommended for fans of Gareth Williams & Mary Currie’s Flaming Tunes, Minimal Man and Grouper. Pressed on translucent blue vinyl in a limited / numbered edition of 1,000 copies.

"Undestroyed is the long-awaited debut from the genre-damning Free Salamander Exhibit of Norcal, comprised of four fifths of the legendary Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, with the appropriate confusion of tottering riffage, clarity of intent, and apocalyptic joy. Lyrics include “utopian cyber-hippie, this is your world now,” and the word “catachresis,” which has been defined as a “harsh, unfamiliar musical dissonance.” Hey, if the shoe fits. But for those weary of the headlong stumble “into the night, into the dark, into black silence,” there is the respite of homemade instruments, winds, bells and hooves, and the comforting pulse of afro-dodecacaphony."

***Daydreaming Blues is the third album from transatlantic punks PALE ANGELS, based between New Jersey and Swansea, Wales. Guitarist MICHAEL SANTOSTEFANO and bassist JAMIE MORRISON play hypnotic, blown out punk with the help of drumming friends on either side of the Atlantic (half written in Wales with drummer REZA MIREHSAN, before completing and recording with CHRIS KRAUSE in the US). If people say being in a band is like a marriage, Pale Angels is more like a long distance love affair, forsaking practicality for an intensely close musical relationship. Recorded live over two days at Strange Weather Studios, Brooklyn NY with Ben Greenberg (of Uniform, Hubble & previously The Men), the new album builds on the blown out, grunge-fueled, garage punk of their previous records with the injection of more dark pop influence, adding touches of Wire and The Pixies to their Hüsker Dü and Ramones-influenced punk. Reflected in its title, Daydreaming Blues has a hypnotic, dreamy quality with depressing themes throughout. The band has spent the past few years touring the UK, Europe and both coasts of America a few times over, playing their usual frantic live set in venues and basements as well as the occasional stripped back quiet set at in-stores and people's houses. Pale Angels are a band best experienced live, and Daydreaming Blues is an album which captures all aspects of that perfectly.

***Mostly composed, recorded, and sketched during an Estonian residency at MoKS for a program that was hosted by Simon Whetham and John Grzinich called Active Crossover, the goal of which was to bring together artists whose work pertained to environmental recordings. With the Estonian landscape pocked with abandoned buildings of considerable size and decay, and no electricity, JIM HAYNES relied on shortwave to capture any electro-magnetic disruptions. The radio reception was eerie and unsettled, producing a crackling, droning noise unlike what one hears in the United States. The A-side reflects an aestheticized paranoia through bursts of static, pulsed noise, and atonal sinews of sustained frequency. The B-side is more introspective, cutting up an Estonian radio broadcast into phonemes, disjointed phrases, and cryptic speech. What few words that can be recognized from the Estonian pertain to the forces of globalization. Clear vinyl. Edition of 300.

***1961 R&B killer Very little is known about BIG CHARLEY or the DOMANS. The Domans were a vocal group from Massillon, Ohio. Big Charley remains a complete mystery. These two terrific R&B sides, now available on the recently revived Hilltop Records label, were more than likely slated for release on Charles and Opal Lantz’s Lanjo label but scrapped for reasons unknown. The backing was probably the RED RYDERS who had a few releases of their own on the Lanjo Label. The Domans would also add some great harmonies to pop singer Jerry Wright's 1960 release on Lanjo. 100% analog pressing straight from the tapes to vinyl. 100% analog previously unreleased. My Mind's Eye / Hilltop
***1960 Moberly, Missouri Rockabilly In the summer of 1960, after spotting an ad for Hilltop Recording Studio in a trade magazine, LEE DRESSER drove over 600 miles to Ashland, Ohio to record a couple of his original songs. "Wiggly Little Mama" had also been recorded back home in Missouri in 1959 with his group the KRAZY KATS but didn't make it past the acetate stage until Deke Dickerson issued it on his Ecco-Fonic label in 1996. The Hilltop version is taken at a much faster pace. Lee and his Krazy Kats would ultimately issue a new recording of the song in 1964. This marks the first appearance of "Hey Mister Weasel", another fine Jerry Lee Lewis-inspired rocker. Although a contract was drafted and a single was scheduled for the Hilltop label in 1960, these sides have gone unheard until now. 100% analog pressing straight from the tapes to vinyl. ***An unreleased 1961 doo wop knock out. from Massillon, Ohio. Formed in 1961 and managed by Charles and Opal Lantz of Lanjo Records, THE GOLDEN TEARDROPS—SONNY HERRING, JERRY HERRING, AL MYRICK, JULIUS MYRICK and JERRY ALLEN—named their group after the Flamingos' 1953 ballad. Sonny, Al and Julius had been members of BOBBY AND THE BENGALS, who released "Double Rock" b/w "No Parking" on Quinton Welty's Wooster, Ohio-based B-W label in 1960. The haunting ballad "Closer and Closer" (originally waxed by Rio and the Little Red Ryders on Lanjo in 1958), and the doo-wop / cha-cha "Caroline." were planned as the Golden Teardrops debut single but the recordings were shelved and remained unissued until now. By 1964 the group had changed their name to the ELGINS and, with the help of Akron, Ohio group Ruby and the Romantics, went to New York and recorded four sides that were released on the Congress label. These Elgins are not to be confused with the Motown/V.I.P. act. Most of the members went on to sing in various groups in and around Canton. Jerry Allen went on to play professional football for the Baltimore Colts and Washington Redskins from 1966-69. He is one of 13 co-holders of the NFL record for the longest touchdown pass reception of 99 yards. Whether these excellent doo-wop sides were considered too outdated to be commercial in the early 1960s or they were simply lost in the shuffle, they've finally gotten a well-deserved release here in 2016. 100% analog...

***REISSUED ON VINYL!!! You Were A Diamond is a record that is both haunting and haunted (that cello, the way it mimics the scraping of fragmented skull against fragmented brain). Like paintings done on glass instead of canvas, fragile and yet somehow more luminous. CLEM SNIDE's music is impossible to reduce to a literal description—can’t call it alt-country when there’s a cello, call it lo-fi even though you’re able to hear every note, call it folk, even though there is a predominant electric guitar. All of this adds up to the most unlikely of sonics. Call it CLEM SNIDE. Or maybe call it the missing link between John Cale and Hank Williams. Even the band name, Clem Snide, sounds like a demented Flannery O’Connor character, But it’s actually from a William Burroughs novel. Originally released on CD in 1998 and then again in 2002. ***‘Going, Going…’ is the title of the widely anticipated ninth studio album from UK indie darlings, THE WEDDING PRESENT, but, in typical Wedding Present fashion... it’s not a conventional release! Going, Going... tells the story of a road trip across the USA, revealed across a collection of twenty ‘linked’ songs, each with an accompanying short film. Always challenging and experimental, the idea to release the new project in a multi-media format is something that has been marinating with bandleader DAVID GEDGE for some time. Recorded at Studios La Fabrique in the south of France and Parr Street Studios in Liverpool with multiple Grammy award winning producer ANDREW SCHEPS (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Adele) the resulting twenty tracks represent arguably The Wedding Present’s finest work to date, with Gedge, as always, showing himself to be the unrivaled master at observing human relationships from an everyman perspective but with the touch and artistry of a poet.

***California death metal project OUR PLACE OF WORSHIP IS SILENCE has traveled a long, hard road, and every note of this journey rings true in debut full-length The Embodiment of Hate. Featuring current and ex-members of fellow California acts LAKE OF BLOOD and TEETH, Our Place of Worship is Silence recently recruited bassist BRENT RANDEL (HHL, LASH CROWN) and vocalist CHARLIE MUMMA (L'ACEPHALE, SISSY SPACEK, ex-KNELT ROTE). The anticipation has been high, and the time has finally come. Our Place of Worship is Silence's voice into the void was announced in 2014. Upon retrieving and enhancing faded disciplines, it became anew—the heralds of frenzied chaos. The band has acknowledged the dire faith of rigorously manipulating the scope of black and death metal. Thematically rich in dynamic misanthropy and existential dread, Our Place of Worship is Silence is here to unveil that the will of all is the will of none. Edition of 200 copies on black vinyl housed in spot UV varnished jackets. In the words of Cvlt Nation: "...this band is pushing music to other levels of heavy and disgust. [The Embodiment of Hate] will prove to you why I feel that Our Place of Worship is Silence is gonna BLOW THE FUCK UP in 2016!"

She has been featured on Pitchfork’s The Out Door column, Tiny Mix Tapes, and NPR’s All Songs Considered. The Gilded Hegemony of Stars is her new full-length and first release on vinyl. Awash in ambient synths, Fister’s vocals are layered into a spacey murmur. It’s an appropriate aesthetic choice for a record that comments on the way many present their lives online. Says Fister, “Most of the songs were created as a way of coming to terms with millennial culture—with its fragmented morality, narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies, privilege, self-righteousness, definitions, individualistic viewpoint, solipsism etc. Sometimes, I feel alienated and overwhelmed in such a digitized, click-bait, ADD, hook-up cultured, hyper-stylized world. Sometimes art-making seems pointless, as I never felt so weary of interpersonal relationships—which I believe is systemic from current American cultural and socio-political norms. But yet I embrace it and kiss it anyway. I try to wrap my head around a world that I will never be able to understand. My idealized / romanticized pastoral fantasy has been broken again and again, as I try constantly to rebuild a myth.”

***The self-titled debut album by BLOODTHIRSTY VIRGINS is filled with beautifully tragic songs; a rock and roll record filtered through a cinematic lens. The band is the brainchild of NIKKI WONDER, a torch and jazz vocalist who developed her emotive style through years of theater training and fronting Columbus punk rock band JACK NEAT. In 2014, Wonder traveled to London to see one of Kate Bush’s Before the Dawn concerts, and returned to Columbus thoroughly inspired and determined. She picked up a guitar and began writing. As a latch-key child of a single working mother and absentee father, Wonder grew up escaping with classic books and old movies, which fed her penchant for drama. Her songwriting is based on the soundscapes and hooks of those old movies and books; the stuff that fed her childhood fantasies of love and revenge. Wonder’s lyrics contain an edge of danger and beauty. An innocent line can subtly imply illicit danger: “Would it be so wicked to love me?”, Wonder sings on “So Wicked,” and one can’t help but think the answer is “Yes.” The record is lushly arranged: lavish vocals and fuzz pedal leads are anchored by a bombastic rhythm section. Recorded in a cavernous organ factory, the sound is clear and spacious. The other members of Bloodthirsty Virgins are veterans in their own right: guitarist and luthier SCOTT GORSUCH (LOLLIPOP FACTORY, solo artist), drummer / engineer KEITH HANLON (THE BLACK SWANS, PARKER PAUL), and bassist JAMES WOOSER (KNOT BROTHERS, PERENNIAL RYE).

***ULTHA's second full-length album Converging Sins is a 63-minute rumination on the subject matter of how past events and wrong decisions will echo throughout the rest of our mortal existence. Over years experiences of failure and the conscious ability to willingly commit mistakes, to hurt, to reject, to alternate truths etc. lead to a path where silence in and around you is the ultimate repercussion. The record is a testimony to everyday melancholia, inner solitude and the human struggle to lead the wrong life in the right, the struggle against your animalistic nature. On Converging Sins the band further their trademark sound of fast, hypnotic, reverberant Black Metal in a more US tradition played by acts such as Ash Borer, Weakling, Leviathan and Wolves In The Throne Room. It is combined with crushing Doom heaviness close to acts such as Lycus, Asunder and Forn while also blending in an overall hopeless and gloomy atmosphere mostly connected to Dark Wave bands such as The Sisters Of Mercy and (early) The Cure.

Originally released on compact disc in 1996, it was a fanboy wet dream: a hand-numbered, limited-edition small cardboard box stuffed with candy, tiny toys, crayons and a coloring book. The music, like the packaging, showed the same DIY anything-goes attitude—lyrics like “She came home to runaway...” are completely upended by the demented howl of a brutalized violin on “Monkey Does His Thing,” while “Shotgun Hours” is like a Lou Reed meets Townes Van Zandt death-song. “The first time I met Alex Dingley, he was standing in a dark rainy alleyway in the UK. I was halfway intimidated, him smoking a cigarette as he grinned wide… Two front teeth missing and he extended his hand… Mischievously laughing. Immediately I felt his kind and genial warm soul. I knew he was a longtime friend of Cate Le Bon, so I knew he was good people. When asked to “co-produce” his album with Cate I was so very interested to hear his life in music. Anyone with two front teeth knocked out must have a plethora of wild stories (and…he does). I couldn’t have been more curious. He comes from Wales, where he shares his life with his lovely wife Mared, who in 2010 collapsed and was diagnosed with a grade-three brain tumor. Alex has story, he has more than story, and these life-changing events have inspired a need to bleed the pen….This time they are both sharing this experience through the eternal beauty of love, art, and song. Bags were packed and Alex, Mared, Cate, myself and trusted (sonic master) recorder Samur Khouja all communed up in the panoramic house studio overlooking the ocean in Northern California. ***BACK IN STOCK!!! Hex Enduction Hour was originally conceptualized as the death knell for The Fall. Beleaguered by career uncertainty and guided by vague premonitions of collapse, Mark E. Smith declared that one full hour was needed to thoroughly and perhaps finally state his case with The Fall. This framework resulted in a true classic of the post-punk era and an album that gave The Fall their first taste of album chart success, thankfully removing surrender from the equation. Recorded in haste in both Iceland and England in late 1981, the performances on Hex Enduction Hour are among the band’s most urgent and distinctive. The album begins with the severe provocation of “The Classical” and the terse punk of “Jawbone And The Air-Rifle,” but it’s “Hip Priest” that stands out as Smith’s calling-card theme, a song that would become inextricable from his character (or perception thereof) in the years that followed. The elongated “And This Day” fittingly positions the band as spell-casters, closing the hour by filling every conceivable bit of space with wild, primitive percussion and whimsical electric piano. Superior Viaduct’s edition is the first time that Hex Enduction Hour has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1982. Liner notes by Brian Turner.

On Room To Live, The Fall take the hurried, all-or-nothing approach of their preceding Kamera Records releases to extreme ends. Forged via Mark E. Smith’s continual disassembling of players and focus on previously unrehearsed material, the album collects The Fall’s most experimental and improvisational recordings. As proclaimed on the album cover, “Undilutable Slang Truth!” would be revealed throughout Room To Live. With the album’s comparatively lo-fi production and always- teetering performances, the title track comes closest to a stab at pop (by The Fall’s standards), built on fantastically bent saloon swaying under one of Smith’s by-now characteristic dressing-downs of square life. “Detective Instinct” is an unshakeable creeper, as languid and ominous as the band would get during the Marc Riley years. “Marquis Cha Cha” is a post-punk rhumba, beginning with fury and then easing into something only The Fall could conjure. Superior Viaduct’s edition is the first time that Room To Live has been available on vinyl domestically since its initial release in 1982. Liner notes by Brian Turner.

Received a 7.5 rating from Pitchfork. With their third album What Graceless Dawn, Oakland’s Worm Ouroboros bring into existence their deepest and most moving work yet. On the follow-up to the band’s sophomore release, 2012’s Come The Thaw, bassist/vocalist Lorraine Rath (ex-The Gault / Amber Asylum), guitarist/vocalist Jessica Way (Barren Harvest), and drummer Aesop Dekker (Vhol, ex-Agalloch / Ludicra) take the band’s sound to a new level of sophistication through their amalgam of morose 4AD-esque doom, introspective death rock, dark ambient, and enchanting chamber goth. Replete with obsessive bass lines, ambient guitar layers and overtones, the alluring vocal inter-twinings between Rath and Way, and Dekker’s subtle yet procession-like percussion, this sonic vision of tragedy and despair brings the curtain down on the year with one of the most crippling and gut-wrenching releases in the realm.
