Leavening by Shores

Shores

Leavening
No Idea

***SHORES was never intended to be a “band.” It had been a sound/style that had been obsessed over since the band members’ high school days. Formed by drummer JOHN MASSEL and guitarist/vocalist BRIAN PRZYBYLSKI somewhere in mid-2008, practicing in rogue basements around the Grand Rapids area and forming in the ashes of band members’ prior bands NORTH LINCOLN, WORMBURNER and THE HARTFORD WHALERS. Shores immediately embarked on their first album Coup de Grace tracked in just 16 hours over two days that fall. After a fairly inactive 2009, the band completed their critically acclaimed 2010 release To Volstead, adding members SEAN STEARNS (guitars) and BILLY BARTHOLOMEW (bass) to join the fold “for a few shows.” Bartholomew’s pop sensibility and love of all things “space rock” , and Stearns’ penchant for noise and sad bastard balladry were perfect complements, even almost missing pieces, to what Massel and Przybylski had already started, and led to an album described as reminiscent of slowcore champions Codeine, Red House Painters, Low, Slowdive, June of 44 and others. Leavening is a perfect reflection of Shores’ spectrum of influences, exploring loudness, playing with effects and noise, and raising the bar the band had previously set for themselves.

***There’s a certain point in your 20s where you either give in and start working for that American dream of suburban retirement, or you double down on your own path and figure out what drives you. The four members of WORN IN RED all hit that crossroads awhile ago, and clearly decided to work toward their own definitions of happiness. For them, writing interesting, evocative songs—and lighting a room on fire when those songs are played—is a crucial part of feeling alive. It makes the frustrations of this world more bearable. And when you do it with some of your best friends, it can be more fun than anything you ever imagined. Worn In Red have addressed these themes in their music over the years. The pummeling catharsis of 2009’s In The Offing (No Idea) reflected the fading hope that punk rock might still have a role to play in the brighter tomorrows being promised at the time. But with Banshees, Worn In Red eschew reliance on such grand abstract notions, and instead celebrate reliance on each other. Banshees extolls the people in our lives who help us remain true to our own paths no matter how difficult it gets. It also excoriates the institutions that make this quest for authenticity so difficult in the first place. The sound of Banshees mirrors this mix of optimism and struggle, with potent melodies that are both unconventionally memorable and gloriously frenetic. Combined with a locked-on rhythm section and vocals that could inspire...

***Recorded by ROGER CAMERO (No Motiv / Warriors / Gravemaker) at Bright Lights Studio and mastered by PAUL MINER (Death By Stereo / H20) at Buzz Bomb Sound Labs, Oxnard / Ventura, California-based STOP BREATHING’s debut LP channels the energy and urgency of their area’s historic Nardcore predecessors, while merging it with late ‘80s hardcore. Imagine RKL partying it up in New York City during the late ‘80s and you get a picture of where they’re coming from.. Stop Breathing frontman and drummer for THE FUCKING WRATH, JOH CRERAR says of the new album "All the songs are kinda varied subject wise but I guess I would say the songs are about living in our fucked up times, but knowing life is short, and that we gotta make the most of the time we have. ***Philadelphia's CREEPOID mine the quiet side of breathy acoustic / slowcore, then erupt into heavy, hard hitting distortion, all within the course of their debut album Horse Heaven, and sometimes within a single song. They are kindred spirits (and tour-mates) with bummercore champions Shores, with whom they'll also be releasing a split EP later next month. Produced, engineered and mixed by KYLE “SLICK” JOHNSON (Wavves, Modest Mouse, Love As Laughter, The Hives) at Fancy Time Studios in Philadelphia, Horse Heaven recalls the likes of Mazzy Star, Goodnight Loving, and the warmest blend of dark, lush, and eerie in an acoustic / electric hybrid. ***GARED O’DONNELL (PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS) had a very crappy year. Essentially, his band broke up, and his wife dumped him. Bummer! Apparently, all that misery combined with anxiety attacks and excessive drinking make you want to escape your nightmarish existence, so Gared went to Gainesville to "record his solo album". While he was there, he was befriended/rescued by none other than guitar/bass maestro CHAD “MALIBU” DARBY. Along the way, GEORGE “REBEL WITH AN O” REBELO (HOT WATER MUSIC, AGAINST ME!) inadvertently got roped into helping write keyboard parts and a wee bit of drumming while he was at it. Other supporting players include the illustrious JON GAUNT, MATT RADDICK and CHRIS WOLLARD. The resulting album is as bleak as it is depressing. It also features the most blatant Motown/Afghan Whigs bites of Gared's fabulous musical career. To say that there are pop nuggets lurking within this seething document of a life collapsing on itself is an understatement. This is Mr. O'Donnell at his most honest and transparent. Despite it all, Year One is a cathartic and genuinely uplifting experience. For real! LP includes a download.

***HIGH DIVE is the new three-piece Queer punk band from RYAN WOODS of DEFIANCE, OHIO. "I first saw TOBY play solo songs August of 2009. I was touring a lot at the time with Defiance, Ohio and we were seeing a lot of solo guitar players, but there was sincerity to his music that we were all really attracted to. It wasn’t long before we were spending most of our time together and he became a regular guest on Defiance, Ohio tours. Toby moved to Bloomington from Chicago. For years, THEO HILTON (Defiance, Ohio / NANA GRIZOL) and I had found it difficult to talk about the issues of being queer in our songs. It was something that was really important to us. Toby seemed to have a real strength for expressing his feelings on those topics and along with our friend, CLYDE PETERSEN (YOUR HEART BREAKS) we all found a greater voice for speaking about our experiences being queer. That relationship lead to some small tours and a 4-way split release LP on Talking Helps Records from Seattle. It included new and previously released solo songs by Toby, Clyde and Theo along with Defiance, Ohio and Nana Grizol songs we felt to be relevant. It also included two songs from a band Toby and I had started not long before called HIGH DIVE. We were really excited by the energy of some of our good friends three piece pop-punk bands like Songs for Moms, The Max Levine Ensemble, Delay...

***GOOD LUCK is, without hesitation, the most positive group of people in one band possible. This exuberant wellspring is tapped on each and every song, even the heartfelt and downtrodden ones. In any other hands, the noodling would be too noodley. The sugar would be too delicious. Somehow the intricacy and curious time signatures melt away, taking a back seat to the overtly catchy and triumphant choruses. Charmingly humble and possessing a wickedly sharp wit, these songs are as fine as they come. This band deserves to be massive, thought they would probably be just as happy opening for Ted Leo on a world tour. For fans of Superchunk, Weakerthans, Ted Leo, Thermals and Built To Spill.

***Sonically anchored by a guitar-driven melodicism reminiscent of later-era Small Brown Bike, BRIDGE AND TUNNEL harness the explosive, angular technique employed by luminaries like Fugazi and Cursive to convey a cutting sense of immediacy and intensity. Bookended by soaring atmospheric compositions, the roots of the album lie in a commanding mastery of complex rhythm and a precision born of both tireless effort and innate chemistry. Above it all, their voices weave together through a range of emotionally-laden tones as somber harmonies flip on a fill to a wrenching howl that echoes the desperation and defiance they’ve put to paper.   “Bridge and Tunnel pull risky maneuvers on their sophomore full-length. Opening with their longest song to date, ‘Synchronized Swimming’ (a nearly six-minute stunner that moves from haunting to beautiful in under 45 seconds), it’s an epic achievement that shows just how brilliant and passionate the New York act can be. From the aggressive prog-hardcore of ‘Outgrowing Pains’ to the emotive break in ‘Drill Instructor,’ the band continue to ply their trade via countless guitar pedals, mathy rhythms and intelligent metaphors detailing the panic involved in honest, urban living... this is the type of forward thinking that doesn’t turn up nearly often enough in punk.”—Brian Schultz, Alternative Press

Not a cathedral, not a church, but a place of warmth and comfort nonetheless. The patient crescendo builds, the percussion kicks in, rocketing the dynamics into full play. ***"Providing the ideal soundtrack to your next Nietzschian nervous breakdown, Like Shadows is another high-water mark for AMPERE. Since picking up the flag for intelligent, literate screamo in 2002 when his former band, ORCHID, called it quits, guitarist WILL KILLINGSWORTH and the rest of Ampere have continued to push the boundaries of inventive, aggressive post-hardcore. Like Shadows is the highest-quality recording in their stacked catalog and the sonic crispness of songs such as ‘Terminally’ make all 28 seconds leap out of the stereo. ***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Eleven new songs, produced by J ROBBINS! This is SMALL BROWN BIKE's first full-length featuring the four original members since Our Own Wars, released in 1999 by No Idea Records. "Over the past few years, it seems as if every post-hardcore/emo act from the '90s have gotten back together for one more go 'round—hell, Braid are about to reunite for the second time, marking another full cycle in the reunion show. However, when these bands actually get back into the studio, the results have been uneven at best. These factors make Small Brown Bike’s first full-length since 2003's The River Bed all the more impressive. Instead of the band members trying to re-create what they were doing in their twenties, songs like ‘In Need Of Everything’ and ‘Just Bones’ retain SBB's signature sound but place it in a fresh new context. Credit is also due to producer J Robbins, who brings out the band's melodic underpinnings on songs like "Sleep River Sleep", a trait that sometimes got lost beneath layers of distortion in the past. ‘Small steps will lead you to bigger things we cannot see,’ MIKE REED sings on ‘A Minor Movement.’ Let's hope that Fell & Found proves Small Brown Bike’s reunion journey is just getting started."—Alternative Press

***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Studio outtakes, in-studio radio shows and live recordings from the busiest six years of SAMIAM. "Strange to think what it was like back then...I have to admit, the ‘90s were often a trial, there were soaring ‘highs’ and a few doleful ‘lows’. But years later, even thinking of loading our gear into a trailer at 4 am. seems...uh, eventful. At the time I might have been wondering what the fuck I was doing with my life but I now tend to romanticize Samiam’s past. I love to remind James of the time in Vienna a dog walked up to him mid-song, sniffed his leg and pissed on his amp. If that isn’t a priceless moment, I don’t know what is. We performed in other prodigious situations, made loads of friends and thought ‘music’ instead of ‘day job.’ Not to say it was the easy, rock star fun people daydream of... Samiam was a garage band thrust into a world of constant touring, major labels and blown transmissions. Yet, the fact that we were basically failures in the eyes of the music industry didn’t change the simple fact that we were young and having fun. Yay us!”—Sergie. CD exportable worldwide. Fusing their vigorously intertwining guitar work with jazzier rhythms harkens back to the early Polyvinyl days of American Football and Braid, while frantic changes anchored by sweeping vocal melodies invoke a strong nod to At the Drive-In. Lyrically, they continue to bare a strong DC influence, expounding a critical and politicized world view while frequently turning the cross hairs on themselves for an introspective self-analysis. ***"NAKED RAYGUN was a huge inspiration for me. Along with Fugazi and Leatherface, they helped create the bedrock that defines the ‘Gainesville sound.’ As much as I discredit the root idea that such a sound even exists or is quantifiable to such a finite point, I will at least concede that there are certain key influences for many a young (at heart) local miscreant. The fact that twenty-one years after NR played a legion hall in Gainesville, we are putting out a record that not only stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best NR album, but perhaps surpasses, well, this blows me away. I have a hard time finding words that express how much (JEFF) PEZZATI’s voice shakes me to the core. Crafting the music and bringing the workhorse/powerhouse ethic are JEFF DEAN, MIKE SOUCY, and PETE MITTLER, who have truly risen to the occasion. They have been in countless Chicago bands, and continue to split their time with several noteworthy, exceptional bands, including THE METHADONES and FOUR STAR ALARM. Energy. Focus. Intensity. As if it could get any better, the album was recorded by J. ROBBINS, who also makes appearances on various songs. He really brought out the best in the band and songs, amplifying and directing, especially in the vocal harmonies and melodies. Pezzati turned in vocals on the last PAINT IT BLACK, and DAN YEMIN returns the favor here. BOB NANNA also lends his inimitable pipes to the mix."—Var (No Idea). Pressed on colored vinyl. Pummel and rage, burn and seethe, crossing from one side of melodic hardcore straight into the heaviest rock. The past is burnt and frayed. The future is unwritten. In the four years since Aesthetic Arrest, G&A have matured, focused, and taken the exploration in unexpected directions, yet there is a common thread within. Their two albums are undeniably distinct. Inventive, intricate and propulsive drumming couples with spot-on, melodic guitar leads: weaving tension, anxiety, and release into every song.

Metric Buttloads Of Rock

***RADON was one the pioneering bands that helped turn around Gainesville, Florida's punk music scene in 1991 and blazed the trail for bands like Hot Water Music and Less Than Jake. After a triumphant return at 2005’s Fest 4 rock festival the boys are back with a batch of all-new songs. Hard rock bliss.

***Lo these years, the ship known as Marburger has been at sea, charting new waters and new lands. Ten years of weeping prepared the world for this moment, the triumphant return of I HATE MYSELF. For those that held onto "the hope" of a reunion, despair not: the good ship Marburger never ceased its voyage; mere moniker alterations created subterfuge. Pung, I Hate Myself, Burnman, die Hoffnung. All things are revealed. Startling literacy and breathtaking, snaking, weaving lines cradle the brain. Grunions, whales, and bats slither, dive, and flitter. They could not locate a bass player, so they forged on without. The sounds are large and open, drums echo from the far corners of the room, guitars weave and stab. Tips of the hat to Shellac!

A History Of Rats by This Is My Fist

This Is My Fist

A History Of Rats
No Idea

***The stunning debut album from THIS IS MY FIST is finally out! For those in the know, this record is much anticipated. Originally recorded a year ago with Tim Green (Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses) at Louder Studios in San Francisco and assisted by Adam PfaHler (Jawbreaker, Blackball Records), the tapes were lost, found, transferred and ultimately remixed by Craigums (Love Songs, All you Can Eat) at Dutch Oven Studio in Alameda after Annie recorded more guitars and vocals to round out the sound. What you get is 100% sincere, aggressive yet melodic Bay Area California punk, drawing from regional bands of the past as well as those of Annie's past in Chicago-area Illinois, notably topped by Annie's raspy cigarettes-and-whiskey stained voice; falling somewhere between Joan Jett and the Avengers!

Crooked Life / Straight World by Trapdoor Fucking Exit

Trapdoor Fucking Exit

Crooked Life / Straight World
No Idea

***The third full-length album from Sweden’s TRAPDOOR FUCKING EXIT, and the band’s finest effort to date. The band’s songs are journeys unto themselves, filled with unexpected twists and turns, creative shifts, and exploratory melodic guitar passages, all backed up with intensely creative percussion that avoids showboating in favor of locking tight with the guitars. Top this off with distinctive vocals, a unique and courageous musical vision, and influences as diverse as Stooges, Black Flag, Drive Like Jehu, psychedelia and neo-prog.
