Anti-Christ Superiority by Conqueror

Conqueror

Anti-Christ Superiority
Nuclear War Now

***At the time of Conqueror’s formation in 1996, the duo of R. Forster and J. Read were unknown. Forster had a project called Domini Inferi with drummer Sven Cannon that released one demo in 1994, and Read was playing murky grinding death metal in Cremation. But the combination of Forster’s merciless riffs and the explosive fury of Read’s drumming produced something novel. When it was first released in 1996, Conqueror’s “Antichrist Superiority” demo presented a distinctive interpretation of Black Metal. Combining the martial superiority of Order From Chaos with the bestial Satanic ferocity of Blasphemy, Conqueror created a new breed of black metal, reflecting the next stage of its evolution and exposing new strata of extremity within the genre.

***Though they only released a handful of tracks, Conqueror’s sound defined an entire subgenre of black metal. During the band’s short existence, they deliberately avoided live performance, focusing instead on perfecting their recorded output. But on November 8, 2014, at NWN! Fest IV in Berlin, Conqueror appeared on stage for the first, last, and only time. Joining J. Read and R. Forster were Revenge’s Vermin on guitar and Haasiophis on bass and vocals. The historic performance was captured on video and previously released on DVD as part of the “War Cult Supremacy” 20th anniversary reissue in 2016. The release of “Nuclear Cult Supremacy” marks the first time the audio from this performance has been decoupled from the video and mastered for release on vinyl, CD and tape to preserve this monumental event.

War.Cult.Supremacy
Nuclear War Now

***Conqueror’s campaign of devastation began with the union of J. Read (Cremation, Revenge, Axis of Advance) and R. Forster (Domini Inferi, Blasphemy). After the 1996 demo, “Antichrist Superiority,” the band turned its attention to crafting the one of the most cataclysmic and savage Black/Death records ever produced. There are few albums as genre defining as “War Cult Supremacy.” Conqueror’s work may arguably be perceived as representing one of the last major steps forward in the evolution of underground metal, with instrumentation and imagery evoking an atmosphere of endless extermination. With Conqueror, Read perfected the style of playing for which he is now revered, where the reckless attack of the drums are a focal point of the band’s sound rather than a backdrop. The horrific collision of Read’s recalcitrant percussion and vocal mayhem with Forster’s roiling guitar cultivates visions of Armageddon in which the turbid smoke of the burning dead turns the sky a deep, opaque grey and the ground is soft with the dampness of blood. The intervening years have not reduced the effect of Conqueror’s music at all—their sound and vision are arguably more relevant now than at the time when they were created, perfectly suited for the apocalyptic nightmare perpetually unfolding around us. Existence is conflict and the martial sound of Conqueror is a mode of combat unto itself. The path toward conquest; the path of the Superion. Confronting the brutal nihilistic reality of the world with warfare mysticism, seeking the nexus of arcane esotericism and the savagery...

Devourer of the Dead by Witches Hammer

Witches Hammer

Devourer of the Dead
Nuclear War Now

***"Nuclear War Now! is proud to continue its longstanding allegiance with the legendary WITCHES HAMMER with the release of Devourer of the Dead, the band's second full-length album in as many years. Originally active in the fertile extreme metal scene of British Columbia during the second half of the 1980s, Witches Hammer developed its brand of Canadian speed metal during the same era and in the same place as such greats as Blasphemy and Procreation. That said, its initial period of activity, which ended in 1990, passed without the recording of a proper album. Instead, it resulted in what some might consider unfulfilled promise, with the release of three demo cassettes and a twelve-inch mini-LP. Almost thirty years later, original members MARCO BANCO (guitars) and RAYY CRUDE (vocals) decided to resurrect the band, which culminated in the 2020 release of its debut album, Damnation is My Salvation. This recording proved that Witches Hammer's intervening dormancy had done nothing to dull the blistering speed metal attack that had been so brilliantly pioneered decades earlier. Now, a little over one year later, the release of Devourer of the Dead reconfirms the band's strict adherence to its dogma of no compromise, no trends, and no fashion. Indeed, aside from the added clarity of an enhanced production level, Devourer… is a fruit of the same wicked root that burrowed its way insidiously into the Vancouver-area underground more than a generation ago. Composed of five brand-new tracks and three newly-recorded demo tracks from the band's...

Creating Our Sins
Nuclear War Now

***With great honor, Nuclear War Now! announces the long-overdue reissue of Salem's masterful "Creating Our Sins" EP on LP format with additional bonus tracks. Having been a fan of the EP for many years and searching (without any luck) for their first two demos for over two decades, this release carries with it a substantial amount of personal significance. Additionally, it took many years of back and forth between the label and band to solidify this deal. Salem is a band that is respected by the deepest underground, but nearly forgotten by the new generation of extreme metal fans, possibly due to its unique place of origin of Tel-Aviv, Israel. This reissue contains the three songs that appeared on the 1992 MLP along with 6 bonus studio tracks recorded in 1989. Given that this is the first vinyl reissue of "Creating Our Sins," and the first time that most of these bonus tracks have been released, it is not to be missed!

Storm Of Satan by Vassago

Vassago

Storm Of Satan
Nuclear War Now

***Sweden’s reputation in the world of underground black and death metal is a well-earned one. Known for stellar musicianship, consistent quality and distinct production, it should be no surprise that many ancient Swedish hordes are still as potent today as ever. With that in mind, NWN! Productions is proud to release Storm of Satan, the second full length from VASSAGO. Formed in the late 1980s, Vasago released two demos in the mid-90s before recording their blasphemous 1999 full length Knights From Hell. The group established an identity with revered fellow countrymen LORD BELIAL, sharing several members. While Lord Belial has earned a stellar reputation for their sweeping, melancholic grandiosity, Vassago approaches black and death metal from a maleficent angle. With biting, vicious intensity that calls to mind fellow northern gods Impaled Nazarene of Nifeheim, Vassago offers a full-scale attack of warlike staccato and a penchant for the disgusting and evil. Storm of Satan is thematically dominated by a pure worship of Satan; a true devotional homage to the literal essence of black metal art. Musicianship and execution are at their peak here, with the additional presence of the legend ANDY LAROQUE (of KING DIAMOND) producing the record as well as providing lead guitar. Storm of Satan offers its listeners no recourse; this is worship of evil for the evil among us.

***Mercy is among the most fascinating and overlooked acts to emerge from Sweden. Formed in the early 1980s by Andrija Veljaca, a native Croatian who moved to Sweden in the 1970s and was the band’s only constant member, Mercy was one of a handful of groups that established Sweden as a hub for a new raw and visceral style of heavy metal in the 1980s. In 1984, just weeks before they were scheduled to enter the studio to record their debut album, Mercy recruited 16-year-old Eddie Marcolin as their new vocalist. After releasing the self-titled debut, Veljaca and Marcolin reconstituted the band as a three-piece and began writing songs that were slower, darker, and heavier than anything they’d done before. The monumental “Witchburner” album was the culmination of Veljaca and Marcolin’s collaboration. Recorded in April 1985, it was an early entry in the canon of what was just then emerging as the subgenre known as Doom metal and marked a total shift in the nature of the band. For “Witchburner,” Marcolin, who doubled as both drummer and vocalist on the album, adopted the name “Messiah” that he would use for the rest of his career. Similarly, Veljaca for the first time assumed the name “Weechking,” which would become his long-standing moniker, though it later evolved to the customary “Witchking” spelling. “Witchburner” showcases the complementary merging of Marcolin’s powerful voice and Veljaca’s hulking riffs and searing leads. The union was short-lived, however, as Marcolin soon departed Mercy to join Candlemass, where...

***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Mystifier's status as one of the most celebrated and respected black metal bands ever to have risen from the Brazilian underground is unchallenged. Slaughterhouse Tapes by Phobia

Slaughterhouse Tapes
Nuclear War Now

***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! The emergence of the Norwegian Black Metal movement is often regarded as a sudden paradigmatic shift in sound and aesthetics. But it didn’t take place in a vacuum; many of the key players in the scene were already involved in underground metal. So it was for the founding members of Enslaved (Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson) and Theatre of Tragedy (Hein Frode Hansen), all of whom initially played in a short-lived but impressive Death Metal band called Phobia. The "Slaughterhouse” to which the title of this collection refers is Gamle Slaktehuset, or “old slaughterhouse,” a community youth center in the small town of Haugesund that served as an incubation center for numerous adolescent bands in the region. Equipped with multiple rehearsal rooms, a studio, a café, and a performance space, Slaktehuset offered everything a fledgling band needed. Ranging in ages from 12-18, the members of Phobia coalesced around Slaktehuset, where they wrote and rehearsed original material and eventually recorded their demos, “The Last Settlement of Ragnarok” and “Feverish Convulsions,” both of which were released in 1991. (The first Enslaved and Immortal demos were also recorded at Slaktehuset later that same year.) Owing to the band members’ drive and dedication, the material on these demos is far more sophisticated than one might expect. Musically, Phobia calls to mind Autopsy, with a morose, doom-laden edge reminiscent of early Paradise Lost. The songwriting, however, is unique and the production strikes a balance between capturing the band’s raw, youthful energy...

***Following the release of its fifth studio album, "The Dwelling," in 1996, Sabbat returned to a somewhat more conventional approach to songwriting with its 1999 follow-up, "Karisma." Whereas "The Dwelling" consisted of a single, hour-long track composed of several different movements in the band's signature style, "Karisma" reflected a more traditional structure, with six separate songs of Sabbatical "blacking metal." This more standard framework aside, "Karisma" is anything but your typical black metal album or a carbon copy of one of Sabbat's earlier works. On the contrary, "Karisma" is the product of the band's most significant foray to date into its own Japanese cultural roots. Not to be confused with its English-language counterpart ("Charisma"), "Karisma" is the first Sabbat album to feature lyrics in Japanese. Furthermore, the music itself contains elements that include traditional Japanese melodies, not unlike those of old "enka" songs. Thematically, the album journeys into Japanese religious myths and traditional occultism, presented through the lens of Sabbat’s uniquely-concocted black heavy metal. As it has done previously with its reissues of the first five Sabbat albums, Nuclear War Now! is proud to hereby present "Karisma" in all of its original glory.

Regere Sinister / Cemetery Lights by Cemetery Lights / Regere Sinister

Cemetery Lights / Regere Sinister

Regere Sinister / Cemetery Lights
Nuclear War Now

***“In the storied tradition of iconic black metal split LPs, Nuclear War Now! Productions announces the bleak communion of CEMETERY LIGHTS and REGERE SINISTER. These two entities occupy strange and uncharted positions in their respective musical paradigms. Cemetery Lights continues the occult campaign established in its arcane discography, melding primeval black doom with a truly disquieting atmosphere that invokes a sense of horror akin to the works of Thomas Ligotti. Candlelit guitars and deliberately intoned vocals transport the listener to the beyond, accompanied by a musical sensibility with precedents in the work of Necromantia and Mortuary Drape. Regere Sinister crawl from the coldest reaches of Finland to ooze their filth into our collective headspace. Cruel plodding poetry dripping with icy synthetic mania sets the stage for these blasphemous hymns. That both members have spent time in RIDE FOR REVENGE should come as no surprise, as these works suggest an affinity with the aforementioned horde and the dark traditions of their Finnish predecessors. This is a truly singular work in the annals of modern black metal, and one that should not go unnoticed by those literate in the dark arts.”—P. Lautensleger

***REISSUED!!! 1990 was an extraordinarily prolific year for BEHERIT, who were still just teenagers at the time and had only been playing music together for a few months. That year they released three demos, catching the attention of the fledgling German label Shithouse Records, which released Beherit’s Dawn of Satan’s Millennium pic disc EP later that same year. Shithouse, which later became Turbo Music, commissioned the band’s debut album, but a dispute between band and label ultimately led Turbo to release a compilation, instead, under the name The Oath of Black Blood. A proper debut album would not appear until 1993, with the release of Drawing Down the Moon. However, Beherit did enter the studio in 1990 with the intention of recording an album, but it was discarded and the tapes went missing until 2011 when drummer SODOMATIC SLAUGHTER unearthed them for release. While its historic value is undeniable, At the Devil’s Studio is a remarkable recording in its own right. Like Beherit’s other pre-DDTM recordings, At the Devil’s Studio is a visceral explosion of bestial carnage.

***The power and efficacy of pure, authentic speed metal is a rare phenomenon in the history of modern music. It is easily recognized, brutally effective, and rarely replicated. With this in mind, NWN! Productions is duty-bound to rerelease the classic Metal Deadness split from Dutch speed maniacs SECOND HELL and SKULL CRUSHER. Originally released on Killer Elite records in 1986, Metal Deadness documents two of the earliest extreme metal groups from the Netherlands on one LP. SECOND HELL occupies the first side with their faster-than-fast brand of evil speed metal that defies rigid genre categorization. Conceived in this golden age of extreme musical expression, Second Hell bulldozes its audience with a reckless abandon on par with early Sodom or Destruction. Skull Crusher fulfills the high bar set by the first side with a quadrant of erudite European speed cantos. In the tradition of early iconoclasts Running Wild and Venom, Skull Crusher takes the language of classic heavy metal and translates it into a dialect endemic to the cultural zeitgeist of 80s extreme art. Metal Deadness is a primary source of cult 80s deathrash. Its relative obscurity may be due to the fact that it was originally supposed to be a four-way split featuring the mighty Thanatos and Angel Dust (later known as Asgard). Despite its long-standing status as a purely underground endeavor, the vinyl edition of Metal Deadness finally establishes these two groups’ rightfully earned recognition in the history of black speed metal.

***Finnish legends BLACK CRUCIFIXION return to the temporal realm with the reissue of The Fallen One of Flames / Satanic Zeitgeist. Active in the legendary early 90s Finnish black metal scene, Black Crucifixion shares many of the hallmarks of their Northern peers while establishing a distinct manifestation of their own black death art. A sinister atmosphere breathes through these arcane recordings, coupling plodding and torturous doom with disgusting bestial Satanic worship. Whispered vocals provide a truly unnerving aura with few parallels in black metal beyond their allies Beherit. These two cults share more than just an aesthetic sensibility, as these recordings feature SADOMATIC SLAUGHTER on drums. The Fallen One of Flames demo is a stunning example of the irreplicable black magic conjured during the era in which it was recorded. Satanic Zeitgeist documents a live performance in Oulo in 1991, pairing their raw hymns with two covers of Venom and Sarcofago. The lineage from these early gods to the era of Black Crucifixion is clear to see, and they prove themselves to be more than worthy heirs to this canonized lineage. Requisite listening to those who worship Beherit, Barathrum, and all Northern cults who coat the mind in darkness. This is the first time these two recordings have been released together on one vinyl record. Comes on 180 gram heavy vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with an A4 booklet featuring liner notes, rare photos, and a gig flyer.

***Few locales on Earth are as integral to the development of black death metal than Brazil. A breeding ground of extreme 80s deathcore, the classic Brazilian bands arguably laid the groundwork for the second wave of black metal, and in doing so helped to introduce this infamous genre to the masses. GENOCIDIO, formed in 1986 in Sao Paolo, provide a textbook example of power and intensity that became synonymous with Brazilian black metal. The Grave compiles their obscure 1988 EP with several bonus live tracks and demos. Maniacal speed and thematic mayhem are on display here, each track driven by the fury of pure psychic id. Parallels can be drawn to Sextrash, Vulcano and Sarcofago, but Genocido manage to harness this brand of Brazilian chaos with exceptionally tight riffing and a penchant for heavy, guttural violence. Composed in an era before black and death metal became subjects of sectarian metal enmity, bands like Genocido managed to create their art from a truly fresh perspective that was untainted by external influence. These recordings belong to an important musical heritage whose influence reverberated throughout the globe, and can still be felt today. In a just world, this vinyl edition of The Grave will finally endow this recording the worship it deserves. This edition comes in a gatefold jacket with a thick 36 page booklet.

***Pioneering Finnish metal band Sarcofagus first released the "Go to Hell / All Those Lies'' single in 1979, and then quickly released its first two albums in 1980, the very same year in which Iron Maiden released its self-titled debut. The first of these recordings, "Cycle of Life," provided evidence of a talented group that was on the brink of fully defining itself. While it is a worthy accomplishment in its own right, "Cycle of Life'' was to be overshadowed by its imminent successor, "Envoy of Death." Over the span of its first three recordings, Sarcofagus underwent a few lineup changes, which culminated in the quintet of Kuusniemi (guitars), Juha Kiminki (bass), Ari-Pekka Roitto (drums), Esa Kotilainen (keyboards), and Hannu Leidén (vocals) on the second album. Following the "Go to Hell / All Those Lies'' single, the addition of Kotilainen, one of the most accomplished keyboardists in all of Finland, proved to be of essential significance to the band's climactic sound, which had fully developed by the time the second album was recorded. Although it is heavy metal at its core, "Envoy of Death'' also exudes elements of heavy psych, which are often expressed in the atmospheres created by the keyboard passages and the twisted, effect-laden guitar leads. While this sound is easily observed by even the most casual listener, what is perhaps more elusive is the thematic concept that frames the album and gives purpose to each song.

***"Nearly eight years after the release of Antediluvian’s sophomore album, λόγος, the band returns with a new full-length entitled The Divine Punishment. Originally a duo before later inviting additional members into the fold, Antediluvian has always fundamentally been a collaboration between guitarist/vocalist Haasiophis (Black Death Cult, Revenge) and percussionist Mars Sekhmet, whose relocation to Austria precipitated the band’s hiatus. After reforming for a series of live performances, with a lineup that also featured bassist Aedh Zugna (Solar Winds, Allfather), the band set about writing and recording new material culminating in this monumental album. The Divine Punishment defies the preconceptions that many listeners might have going into it. Thematically centered around the many manifestations of carnal deviance—pathological, unrestrained, cruel—the album is a contorted rendering of the spirit, once pure, blemished and bespoiled through sexual blasphemy. The recoil of ecstatic release. The organs of reproductive union mutilated, splayed. Unbounded perversion, the primal transgression."

***IXTLAHUAC emerged in 2018 from San Leandro, CA and Medellin, Colombia. After two exceptionally refined demos, Teyacanilitztli Nahualli is the most recent offering from this grim alliance. Drawing on influences of classic black and death metal, Ixtlahuac establishes their own unique handle of the genre with grandiose and sweeping song structures, unorthodox instrumentation, and forlorn guitar meditations that all serve to brace the overwhelming power of this full-length offering. Tension runs deep here, with each track offering a tightly composed series of movements that suggest a dramaturgical vision from their creators. A suffocating atmosphere sets the tone, with raw analog recording that brings to mind the best of the LLN hordes. ***Among the more curious entries in the annals of underground Czech black metal obscurities is Satanchist. Czech extreme metal from the late 80s and early 90s always had an elusive, indescribable character; prominent bands like Root, Master’s Hammer, and Torr produced a body of work that avoided adherence to formula. Though unknown compared with the aforementioned bands, Satanchist left an eccentric mark of their own. Formed in 1989—the same year that Communist Czechoslovakia dissolved amid the so-called “Velvet Revolution,” giving rise to the Czech Republic—Satanchist began as a duo playing blackened grind metal. Over the next three years, guitarist Tomas Torquemada and drummer Pavel Slayer Tyrol (accompanied by a bassist known simply as “Stanley”) recorded a handful of demos, none of which were ever officially released. By 1992, Pavel had left the band, replaced by a drummer named “Zombie,” who brought with him a guitarist called Drtič řitních věnců (which translates to the crude and absurd phrase “anal wreath crusher”). With this lineup, Satanchist recorded the “Drtiči Kacířských Pohlaví” demo, the band’s only official release. The demo fell between the cracks of the burgeoning black metal movement, it’s physical obscurity and unconventional stylistic approach rendering it largely inaccessible until it was unearthed for a vinyl reissue in 2013 by the Slovakian label Hexencave Productions. Edition of 250 copies. Includes a 24x12 insert and double-sided A3 poster.

***Beginning in the early 1990s, a handful of musicians in Greece established one of the most distinctive and compelling regional sounds associated with the Second Wave of Black Metal. Rotting Christ laid the foundation for this particular sound, and other acts immediately followed suit helping to define the Greek Black Metal sound and bring it to prominence within the international scene. The importance of Varathron’s contribution cannot be overstated. After releasing what is arguably the greatest Greek Black Metal album of all time, 1993’s “His Majesty at the Swamp,” Varathron recorded and released the superb follow-up, “Walpurgisnacht” two years later. Since that time, the overwhelming brilliance of the former has often overshadowed the fact that “Walpurgisnacht” is a classic album in its own right. Pressed on blue and white splatter vinyl.

Screaming For Resurrection by Funeral Winds

Funeral Winds

Screaming For Resurrection
Nuclear War Now

***Funeral Winds formed in 1991 as a trio composed of Hellchrist Xul (guitars/vocals), Gorgoroth (vocals), and Esteban (drums). Along with Bestial Summoning, which was founded approximately one year earlier, Funeral Winds was among the earliest of black metal bands to emerge from the Netherlands, and its activity through to the present day makes it one of the most significant in the country’s history. Given the era of the band’s formative years and its relative proximity to Norway, it is not surprising that Funeral Winds played in a style similar to that of the more well-known Norse bands like Mayhem and Gorgoroth. Prior to the release of its debut album, Godslayer Xul, in 1998, Funeral Winds recorded three demos, an EP, and a split CD with Abigail. These early recordings were later reissued by two different labels on two separate compilations entitled Screaming for Resurrection… and The Unheavenly Saviour in 2004 and 2019, respectively. These collections are hereby resurrected on vinyl by Nuclear War Now!, a few months after first being made available on cassette by the same label. The Unheavenly Saviour compiles the first two demos (Rehearsal 1992 and La Majeste Infernable), a live track, and an unreleased studio track from 1995 on a single LP. The Screaming for Resurrection… DLP consists of the third demo, Resurrection…, the Thy Eternal Flame EP, and the tracks from the split release with Abigail.

***Like Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice is a project conceived of and executed by multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Jef Whitehead, who is generally referred to as Wrest in the context of his music. For nearly 20 years, through his work with Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice, and many other projects, Whitehead has consistently recorded and released music that has unquestionably left permanent scars on the face of the USBM scene. To call Lurker of Chalice a Leviathan side-project would be inaccurate. Though Leviathan is far more prolific and widely known, Wrest’s recordings under the Lurker of Chalice banner are just as earnest and extraordinary. Indeed, to many, the Lurker of Chalice material represents the zenith of Wrest’s vast and superb body of work. The self-titled Lurker of Chalice album, which came out in 2005, was the only widely circulated recording associated with the project, the two previous demos only being released in very limited quantities. The album garnered massive praise before swiftly going out of print, practically ensuring its stature as a cult masterpiece.

Blood Upon The Soundspace by Blasphemy

Blasphemy

Blood Upon The Soundspace
Nuclear War Now

***Following the recent reissue campaign, NWN! is honored to present the first official release of a rarely heard 1989 rehearsal recording, Blood Upon the Soundspace. This crude open-air mic recording captures the unvarnished vigor of Blasphemy in a way that the contemporaneous studio recordings cannot. The rehearsal took place in Blasphemy’s practice space sometime following the release of the Blood Upon the Altar demo as the Desecraters were writing material that would later appear on the 1990 debut LP, Fallen Angel of Doom. Four of the five tracks feature songs that would be recorded for the album, with "War Command” being the only exception. The live performance of these tracks in the band’s rehearsal space is devastating and showcases a side of Blasphemy that many have never previously heard. The unified front of the instrumentation—the blunt force of Black Winds’ bass assault, the wicked precision of Black Priest’s rhythm guitar, Black Hearts’ furious drumming—is undeniably powerful. Black Winds’ raw vocals, raspier than on the studio recordings, drive the intensity of the performance, while Caller’s renegade solos are characteristically unhinged and frantic. The band only produced a handful of these rehearsal tapes for distribution to close associates. This version of the recording is taken from a tape Black Winds sent to Metalion (Slayer Magazine) in May of 1989—one of the only known extant copies—and is newly mastered by James Plotkin to enhance the audio where possible. (Note that the first track, “Darkness Prevails,” is noticeably more distorted than the rest of...

***Cultus Caliginous have spent the past years establishing themselves as a virulent presence in the tradition of ancient and revered cults such as LLN, BTC, and others familiar to the erudite listener. GHARMELICHT is among the conjurations from this circle whose satanic current has manifested in a self-titled LP to be released by Nuclear War Now! Productions. The Gharmelicht LP is an expert display of the dynamism of raw, black metal. Conjured by a satanic entity known as Vercingetorix, this record was executed according to the Magickal and occult tenets of its aforementioned cult to create an ode to the dark currents that qualify true black metal. This offering is a violent rebuttal of the innumerable false and weak attempts to conjure the intangible evil of black art, establishing its mission statement with force. At times reminiscent of the best moments of classic era Darkthrone, Gharmelicht shrouds its hymns in raw tape rot with tortured vocals that truly sound like an emanation from the noumenal beyond. With an architectural austerity rarely achieved to such a degree of precision, the Gharmelicht LP is essential for those who truly worship the cult of pure black metal.

At The Devil's Studio 1990 by Beherit

Beherit

At The Devil's Studio 1990
Nuclear War Now

***1990 was an extraordinarily prolific year for Beherit, who were still just teenagers at the time and had only been playing music together for a few months. That year they released three demos, catching the attention of the fledgling German label Shithouse Records, which released Beherit’s “Dawn of Satan’s Millennium” pic disc EP later that same year. Shithouse, which later became Turbo Music, commissioned the band’s debut album, but a dispute between band and label ultimately led Turbo to release a compilation, instead, under the name “The Oath of Black Blood”. A proper debut album would not appear until 1993, with the release of “Drawing Down the Moon”. However, Beherit did enter the studio in 1990 with the intention of recording an album, but it was discarded and the tapes went missing until 2011 when drummer Sodomatic Slaughter unearthed them for release. While its historic value is undeniable, “At the Devil’s Studio” is a remarkable recording in its own right. Like Beherit’s other pre-DDTM recordings, “At the Devil’s Studio” is a visceral explosion of bestial carnage. In fact, most of the tracks here are re-recorded versions of songs from the “Demonomancy” demo or else earlier renderings of tracks that appeared on the “Down There…” demo released in 1991 under the name The Lord Diabolus. There are three songs (“At the Devil’s Churns,” “Whores of Belial,” and the instrumental rehearsal track that opens the album) that don’t appear elsewhere in the Beherit catalog. With clearer production than the “Demonomancy” demo that...

Possessed By Evil by Evil

Evil

Possessed By Evil
Nuclear War Now

***NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Nuclear War Now! is proud to announce its continued allegiance with EVIL (Jpn) in releasing the band’s second album, Possessed by Evil. As previously demonstrated on the 2017 debut, Rites of Evil, as well as the demo, two live recordings, and split with Siege Column that have since emerged, these twelve tracks of black/thrash metal once again capture the darkness of first wave black metal and unite it with the aggressive precision of early Teutonic thrash. Previous points of comparison between Evil and early Sodom continue to hold true, as do those that recognize similarities with the most notorious of Japanese hardcore outfits, especially insofar as the unhinged vocal delivery is concerned. Evil is anything but apologetic in its reverence to its metal heritage, which is what lends its recordings such a high degree of authenticity. Possessed by Evil is an unabashed conglomerate of riffs, accentuated by incisive leads and rabidly barked vocals. If there is one notable contrast with the debut album, it would be an increased cohesiveness among the instruments. Whereas Rites of Evil at times felt a bit loose, the performances on this album are characterized by noticeably tighter synchronicity, which one could logically assume to be the result of the band’s greater longevity. In any case, the outcome is one that represents a step forward from an already impressive debut and one that confirms Evil among the best of its black/thrash metal contemporaries.

Analogue Black Terror Vol. II by Simoulin, Jean "Valnoir"

Simoulin, Jean "Valnoir"

Analogue Black Terror Vol. II
Nuclear War Now

***Between the late '80s and 2000, a fringe of the extreme heavy metal youth culture decided to secede from the contemporary scenes to express their deep disgust and hostility towards organized religions, democracies, human rights, the modern world, and humankind in general. Driven by hatred, misanthropy and Satanism, fueled by juvenile passion, and with very limited means, they produced myriads of home made Black Metal recordings which left no room whatsoever to tolerance, mercy, or any kind of positive energy. Some were spoiled brats in search for a reason to rebel, some were convicted murderers, arsonists, grave desecrators or rapists, others were merely incredibly talented artists with a sincere will to put their work in the service of a greater evil. Little consideration was given to sophisticated production, and given how much money was available in the scene, fancy options were not on the table anyway. Home-xeroxed duplicated tapes were spread hand-to-hand within local scenes, or worldwide, via snail mail, amongst a network of individuals all gathered around one idea : to remain an elite that stood alone against the modern world and prayed for its annihilation. A lot of them disappeared, a chosen few became legends—before falling into disgrace to represent the embarrassing circus that Black Metal mostly stands for a quarter of century later. 300 page hard bound book documenting over 370 bands and featuring 550 visual archives of black metal demo tapes.
