***Having first re-conjured the evil spirit of the great Necromantia and their brethren with this three-song offering, Necromantic Worship returned a mere several months later with its second demo, The Calling…, which continues in the same arcane spirit as the first, while adding new elements which serve to yield an even greater result. Still enshrouded in the same occult atmosphere as the previous recording, Necromantic Worship’s newest hymns persist in being primarily driven by the locomotive effect of Ghûllzaraën’s pulsing bass lines. Unlike the debut recording, however, the bass guitar on the The Calling… is more perfectly bound and enhanced by the irreplaceable sound of live, organic percussion, as performed by Daemonomancer from the Canadian band, Goathammer. Additionally, the band saw fit to recruit the services of Zagan, best known as the guitarist of the legendary Countess, to further augment their archaic sound with a series of inspired, climactic guitar leads. This compilation LP compiles their two demos on one LP with a brand new gatefold jacket layout. CD includes two exclusive bonus tracks.

***Conjured from the blackened ashes of Holocausto, Tormentador is the new project from Rodrigo Führer and drummer Leprous AKA Armando Nuclear Soldier, both of whom appeared on Campo de Extermínio and later reunited for the 2018 Guerra Total demo and the Diário de Guerra album, released the following year. (Leprous is also known for his roles in early incarnations of Sarcófago and Mutilator.) Having recently parted ways with the other members of Holocausto, their new project, Tormentador, carries on in the Brazilian war metal tradition with the band’s debut release, Morte Negra. Like the most recent Holocausto recordings, Morte Negra harkens back to the primitive origins of the extreme sounds that emanated from Belo Horizonte in the mid-1980s. By the 1990s, few of the bands from that scene retained the primitive aggression that characterized that era, and fewer still have been able to recapture it in the decades since. But Tormentador deftly summon the impassioned brutality of their youthful work, sharpened with tactical precision for the modern era of black metal. Morte Negra is a pure distillation of the violent sonic pedigree of its members, with manic riffs superimposed over relentless blast beats. Owing to the depth and longevity of their careers, there is an enhanced musicality to the songs and greater focus on their composition, resulting in one of the most fully realized expressions of the Brazilian tradition in more than three decades. Edition of 200 copies on random colored vinyl.

***First wave Black Metal, NWOBHM and Punk addicts BAFOMET are proud to announce their first album F.O.A.D.I.F. being unleashed on 12” LP format through NWN! Productions. Bafomet has been lurking in the deepest part of Japan’s Yomi, crafting a mix of Black Heavy Metal with some Japanese Hardcore Punk elements, resulting in an insulting fist in the face to all that’s considered holy and sacred in this modern world, through the filthiest form of Metalpunk. With lineage going back to cult bands like Crow, Military Shadow and Batallion, it’s no wonder that Bafomet sounds the way they do! While Bafomet has fondness for the old classics, they add their own original ingredients to the style, resulting in a refreshing yet nostalgic approach, different to what you usually hear in the current scene. After the demos “Poison of Darkness” and “The Black Flame Still Burning,” the first album F.O.A.D.I.F. is their logical continuation on spreading vomits, blasphemies and hate, appealing to those who still carry the banner of the Underground. In Death Overshadow Thee
Nuclear War Now

***"This history of the death metal band that is known today as LIGEIA goes all the way back to the first years of the decade. Formed from friends who had a mutual admiration for Kansas City area local legends Order from Chaos and Swedish death done the right way (Treblinka, Grotesque etc…), the band began rehearsals for their first real demo which took the shape of The Conqueror Worm demo from the year 1993. In 1994 the band signed a contract to do a 7” and mini CD for a European label, unfortunately negotiations of the deal broke down and the band was stuck with what it already recorded for the label, the Ligeia 7’ EP tracks. During the very turbulent year of 1995 the band laid pretty much dormant, recording the one and only official live show it did as a demo in February off 1995 (”Live at Howard’s) and parting with Alex later the same year renaming the whole project LIGEIA, after the, at the time, yet unreleased EP. The “Live at Howard’s” demo is another yet unfound gem, with covers of both Tiamat and Sathanas and live versions of songs still not released, the demo is a true diamond in the rough, with a questionable sound but also with a heaviness yet unheard of on these shores! In the Winter of 1995/1996 the band recorded one final EP’s worth of material. Entitled In Death Overshadow Thee the public has yet to witness the truest of brutality in American...

***Following closely on the heels of their debut full-length, Hailstorm, released in spring of 1995, BARATHRUM's sophomore album came out later that year on the revered Nazgul’s Eyrie Productions label. Entitled Eerie, the album is dim and brooding, driven by the pummeling duel bass attack that defines the band’s sound at that time, with twin bass lines supplying both weight and melodic structure to the songs. Barathrum’s early albums reflect an era when black metal was still coalescing into a recognizable genre and bands felt free to explore its perimeters, experimenting and cultivating unique identities. Led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist DEMONOS SOVA, Barathrum established themselves at the helm of the Finnish black metal scene alongside prominent peers such as Beherit and Impaled Nazarene. For Eerie, Sova recruited guitarist SULPHUR to play alongside bassist INFERNUM and drummer PIMEÄ, both of whom appeared on Hailstorm. Despite the inclusion of a full-time guitarist, the album is, like its predecessor, mostly bass-oriented. However, Sova broadened the band’s sonic spectrum on Eerie, writing more intricate songs in which dense, repetitive riffs wind together into concussive, mid-paced stomps and hypnotic dirges.

***Dripping Papal Blood is the secret unreleased second demo recorded a decade ago in 2010, in the band’s now shuttered ‘The Prisoner’s Chant…’ studio which rested at ground level across from the oldest cemetery in New York and rumored to be haunted.  This demo brings to life the complex and fierce rivalry between Emperor Napoleon and the Pope Pius VII. Napoleon went as far as to have Pope Pius VII placed in confinement. Despite the Antichrist’s repugnancy of the papacy, Napoleon knew he still needed the symbolic authority of the church during his unprecedented self-coronation (referred to by the band as ‘ascension to accipitridae!’—the classification of predatory birds of prey). With the appointment of the cruel Cardinal Fesch (a relative of the emperor) after the Antichrist’s coup d’etat of 18 brumaire, Napoleon gave Fesch orders to persuade the pope to attend Napoleon’s coronation, only later to be stripped of religious power and cast out of the diocese upon defiance of Napoleon’s inflexible attitude toward the church. Fesch later died in Rome surrounded by his masterpiece art collection rumored to be pillaged and later bequeathed in his will. Always through the lens of black metal and Nostradamus’ prediction of the arrival of the Antichrist, Dripping Papal Blood intrudes into the interplay and triple-crossing corruption between Napoleon, the Church and his own art-plundering family members appointed through nepotism to the diocese.

***"Abigail was formed as a three person band in January 1992. Original members are Yasuyuki (bass and vocals), Youhei (drums), Yasunori (guitars). I wanted to play black metal like Bathory, Sodom, Hellhammer, Darkthrone, Mayhem. So I asked Youhei, a friend from school who was into Slayer to play drums. I recruited Youhei’s friend Yasunori to play guitar. I had already written some guitar riffs and the three of us headed into rehearsal right away. We rehearsed twice a week in the local studio. Songs came together quickly. Grotesque nightmare, Death of life, The fire of hell, Lucifer sings. They were typical primitive black metal songs: just power chords, no development. I was satisfied these songs. We decided to do a recording for promo tape at the third rehearsal. This is our official first promo tape. We recorded it on cassette recorder. This promo tape used for promotion to overseas. I played the tape to Mirai of Sigh first. He was delighted. He invited us to do a gig in August and We booked Harajuku Los Angels for 7th August 1992. The gig would be called 'Evildoom.' We played together with Transgressor, Necro-E, Gore Beyond Necropsy. It's this performance that is on the this record. I think there were about 80 people there. The audience was stunned. It was the first time they'd seen black metal live, it was probably their first black metal gig. We only had four original songs. We played Bathory and Sodom covers. That was 30 years...

Affiliated entity CULT OF THAUMIEL establishes its mission on the Nuclear War Now! Productions release of Palaces of Iniquity. Shadows Of The Unknown by Mystic Charm

Mystic Charm

Shadows Of The Unknown
Nuclear War Now

***"On the strength of their 1992 demo and 1993 7” EP, Dutch death doom pioneers Mystic Charm entered Harrow Studios to record their first full length album. Released on the Belgian label Shiver Records (which was still in its infancy at the time but would put out dozens of releases over the next decade or so), Shadows of the Unknown is a doom-laden masterpiece of atmospheric death metal. Mystic Charm’s reputation and legacy have always been tied to the vocals of Rini Lipman. The gray, charcoal rasp of her voice adds a sinister quality, darkening the abysmal landscape conjured by the instrumentation while leaving intelligible the sullen and evocative lyrics, most of which were written by Lipman herself. The songs are composed from seamlessly stitched riffs that traverse the chasm between relentless death metal and haunting, melodic doom. Interspersed among the dense, swelling walls of guitars are subtly placed keyboards, whispered vocals, and acoustic guitars, adding a melancholic dimension to the tracks, all of which is braced by the mechanized precision of the drums. Compared with the band’s earlier recordings, the album is more tightly performed and produced. Mystic Charm went dormant following the 1996 release of Shadows of the Unknown, but reemerged in 2001 with the very limited Hell Did Freeze Over CDR, which featured a mixture of new and re-recorded material. This new double LP, featuring both Shadows of the Unknown and Hell Did Freeze Over, is the first official vinyl reissue of either recording."

***"Nuclear War Now! is honored to announce the upcoming release of the debut full-length from Scourge Lair, succinctly and effectively entitled Calamities. Scourge Lair emerged from the hallowed metal grounds of Tampere, Finland in 2014. By 2017, the band had recorded and released its first demo, Abominable Entities, on digital and limited cassette formats. Approximately two years later, its second demo, One Hundred Eyes One Hundred Arms, was released in the same inauspicious manner as its predecessor. The quality and promise of these recordings caught Nuclear War Now's attention, and the label saw fit to reissue both cassettes in February 2021. The sound unleashed on each—a furious amalgam of black and death metal—has now evolved to a point at which its brilliance can no longer be overlooked. Like its preceding demos, Calamities is born as a composite of the band's primary influences, which perhaps most notably include the likes of Demoncy, Autopsy, Bathory, Darkthrone, and Goatlord. However, as one would hope from a first album, Calamities inherits the formula of songwriting and musicianship established on the demos and elevates it to another plane. Tempos tend to inhabit the higher end of the spectrum, and songs are not content to be constrained below the five-minute threshold. Instead, they often opt to push several minutes beyond, yet they do so without ever leaving a moment to dull the listener's attention."

***Caixão is a one man traditional black metal band from Lisbon, Portugal. It follows the steps of the craft created by others that created the genre before in what could be loosely called occult/black metal. Its style can float around a few axes or regional scenes’ influences. It could be the mystical sound of 90s greek/italian/portuguese bands or south american, the finnish or the eastern european. Inspiration comes directly from many sources, some well known and others not. Master’s Hammer, Barathrum, Beherit, Tormentor, Necromantia, Varathron, Sigh, Mystifier, Sarcofago, Zemial could be the most direct of obvious influences. 80s bands are also a big part of it: Celtic Frost, Bathory, Desexult, Mayhem, Messiah, Obscurity, Treblinka. ***After three years of lurking dormancy, GNOSIS reemerges from the depths with Omens from the Dead Realm, their latest full-length offering. From the Greek word for “knowledge”, Gnosis is adept at translating Greek sonic arcana into their own distinct language. Blunt brutality is complimented by breathtaking melancholia with tasteful nods to archetypes found throughout the history of heavy metal music. ***Formed in Michigan during the late '80s, LUCIFER'S HAMMER was a prominent fixture in the Midwest underground, playing numerous regional gigs and routinely featured in the lineup of at Michigan Death-fest. The earliest incarnation of the band was more thrash-oriented, but as the band evolved, it gravitated toward a darker black/death metal sound. By the mid 1990s, Lucifer’s Hammer was part of a circle that included such bands as Summon, Masochist, and Wind of the Black Mountains, all of which at some point shared members with Lucifer’s Hammer. It proved to be among the most fertile scenes of early USBM around that time. Lucifer’s Hammer was among the first American bands to play death metal suffused with the atmospheric darkness and savage ferocity associated with the then-emerging black metal movement. ***Often overlooked in most reviews of early 1990s European death metal, MYSTIC CHARM remains one of the more unique and intriguing acts from that era. Originally formed in 1989 by guitarist HERWIG SCHULLING and female vocalist RINI LIPMAN, the two began writing songs together and working with other various local musicians, but Mystic Charm’s lineup was not settled until early 1992 with the inclusion of bassist GERLACH TIMMER and drummer GERARD VAN ASSEN. The band relentlessly rehearsed their original material and recorded a studio demo that year entitled Endless Sickness. At the time, Mystic Charm’s rehearsal space was located in a barn, but they were forced to relocate after the owner blamed the band’s loud music for miscarriages suffered by the horses. That same year, Mystic Charm entered Harrow Studios, where fellow Dutch death doom legends Asphyx recorded their early material. And though the comparisons to Asphyx are inevitable because of their common temporal and geographic origins, Mystic Charm’s sound was doomier and more melodic and ethereal. The band’s subtle usage and tasteful placement of keyboards further distinguished them from many of their contemporaries. The dense atmosphere of the music and Lipman’s raspy vocals yield a sound more akin to the burgeoning black metal scene, particularly early Samael. Owing to the studio production, Endless Sickness, despite being a demo, remains one of the strongest death doom recordings from the era. The demo earned the band a recording deal with the new Belgian label Shiver Records and, in 1993, the band...

Demos 1989 - 1992 by DAI

DAI

Demos 1989 - 1992
Nuclear War Now

***In the late 1980s, the former Czechoslovakia was an incubation chamber for some of the most unique and expressive extreme metal ever produced. Coinciding with the rise of death and black metal, the demise of Communism produced a fertile scene of disaffected youth eager to embrace these new radical modes of expression. By the end of the Communist era, the Iron Curtain had become culturally porous, permitting the influx of art and music from the West that catalysed underground movements in Eastern Bloc countries. Filtered through a youth movement still shaking off the hangover of authoritarian policies, cultural isolation, and the promotion of Soviet values, the sights and sounds of the early Czech scene were unlike those emanating elsewhere in Europe. While bands such as Master’s Hammer and Root are widely heralded now as progenitors of Czech black metal, a lesser known contemporary act called DAI fully embodied the same approach. The four demos collected on this double LP were recorded between 1989 and 1992, a transitional period for Czech society. Like the aforementioned bands, DAI’s early recordings were primitive in some respects but displayed an idiosyncratic approach to black metal that sets them apart. And these demos by one of the most obscure Czech acts to emerge during black metal’s second wave should be every bit as revered as the early recordings of Master’s Hammer, Root and others.

Started a few years earlier, Monitor was extremely prolific, mostly focusing on Czech rock and punk bands, but it ventured into metal with releases such as the Ultrametal compilation in 1990, Ritual by Master’s Hammer in 1991, and various thrash bands such as Debusterol, V.A.R., and Krabathor. By 1993, Monitor was the preeminent label for extreme music in the newly formed Czech Republic, working with other significant bands like Torr and Root. DAI entered the studio in the summer of 1992 to record what would be the band’s only full-length release, the monumental album The Advent. Released in 1993 on CD and tape, The Advent is wildly eccentric. As if viewing the death and black metal produced in northern and western Europe through some kaleidoscopic distortion, DAI produced a uniquely unconventional work, the oblique sensibilities of which rivaled the contemporaneous works of Master’s Hammer. Indeed, had DAI continued releasing music, the two bands would likely occupy similar stations in the history of black metal. Instead, following the release of The Advent, DAI disappeared, leaving behind a concise but distinctive catalog. And given the extreme rarity of the demos, few people outside of the former Czechoslovakia likely ever heard the demos preceding the album. Consequently, DAI mostly remained an obscure curiosity known primarily to collectors. This new edition marks the first reissue of The Advent since...

***"With its inception in New York City in 2018, MORBID SPHERE was born an heir to the location's long legacy of dark and oppressive death metal. Among its primary influences, the band perhaps unsurprisingly mentions Incantation, fellow denizens of the same depraved metropolis whose well-established and recognizable body of work is reflected in Morbid Sphere's initial recordings. Said parallel aside, this relatively newfound quartet's sound has been shaped by a variety of influences that give it multiple dimensions and thus distinguish it from what one might be led to expect based simply on its place of origin and assigned subgenre. Similarly to the legendary Disembowelment of a continent far-removed, Morbid Sphere takes advantage of the space between notes and beats just as effectively as it conjures those elements themselves. The band also reaches outside the typical boundaries of death metal in drawing inspiration from the works of Ved Buens Ende and Virus, in particular through its use of progressive and unorthodox melodic ideas. The result of this recipe was first captured on Demo I and Demo II, which are hereby compiled and reissued as Arcana by Nuclear War Now! Productions. Although it may only be the introduction for many to Morbid Sphere, "Arcana" represents a promising new branch in the firmly-rooted NYC death metal tree."—C. Conrad

***REISSUED!!! In 2016, it is relatively rare but refreshingly authentic to discover a band that has nurtured its craft and spread its disease through more traditional underground means. Formed in shrouded obscurity in Belgium in 2011, PERVERTED CEREMONY harnessed the ritualistic vitriol of influences such as Beherit, Archgoat, and Demoncy to record its own unique six-song promo/demo during the first half of 2012. Rather than relying exclusively on the ubiquitous convenience of the internet to spread its demented gospel, the band first circulated a handful of dubbed copies of this recording to its closest contacts and then sent a limited number of the same self-released cassette to a few respected underground distros. It was in this time-honored way that the band caught the attention of Nuclear War Now!, who was impressed enough to offer to further the metastasis of a sound that the label immediately recognized as one inhabiting the same infernal spheres as early Beherit and Barathrum. As such, this unholy alliance of band and label was spawned and NWN! now proudly presents the very same Demo 1 as a pro tape with appropriately updated artwork and layout. Recorded in the evil incubator of the band’s original rehearsal space in subterranean Brussels on analog eight-track equipment, the ceremonial squalor of this demo perfectly matches the truly underground spirit in which it has been disseminated, thus serving as an ominous harbinger of the currently in-progress Perverted Ceremony debut album, also to be released under the auspices of Nuclear War Now!

***REISSUED!!! A mere matter of months since it released its first official recording, Demo I, PERVERTED CEREMONY returns with its uniquely abominable variety of black metal, hereby presenting its debut full-length album, Sabbat of Behezaël, under the very same banner of Nuclear War Now! First discovered by NWN! through the time-honored underground tradition of the band spreading self-produced cassettes to a limited number of contacts, Perverted Ceremony’s music reflects the same authenticity and dedication to their craft as their original manner of clandestine distribution. Although the band lists such revered acts as Demoncy, Mystifier, Von, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Archgoat, and Beherit, as their primary influences, their sound tends to gravitate somewhat more towards the latter two (along with Barathrum), who represent the Finnish tradition of bestial black metal. That said, Perverted Ceremony’s style is not easily compartmentalized according to their influences. On the contrary, with their distinctive approach to songwriting, production, and atmosphere, they have achieved a ritualistic blend of black metal that is unique unto itself. Additionally, Perverted Ceremony has proven with this album that the work recorded on its demo, which was already impressive in its own right, was only a snapshot in the band’s development, and one which has now been superseded.
