Ah Tza Xibala Itzaes
Nuclear War Now

***The long-awaited second album from the original Xibalba, almost a quarter-century after the celebrated debut. Combines more commonly-recognized elements of black metal pioneered by the band’s early influences, such as Bathory, with others inspired by the pre-Hispanic traditions of the members’ Mayan ancestors. Features eight brand-new songs and four re-recordings of songs from the band’s “Demo 2010” cassette and the “Ah Tza!” EP from 2015.

***The third in a series of four alchemy-infused split MLPs, featuring the trademark Hermetic Dark Metal of Ysengrin and the consciousness-altering death metal of Stargazer. Focuses on the theme of Citrinitas, the classical alchemical ingredient of air, or “yellowness,” which is the emergence of solar light that alchemical tradition posits to be inherent in one’s being. Comprised of two original tracks from Ysengrin and one from Stargazer. Artwork by Marko Marov.

***Over the last several years, France’s CENOTAPHE have unassumingly become one of the most promising new voices in black metal. Operating as a duo—each member with a long and distinguished résumé trailing behind him—multi-instrumentalist FOG performs all of the music, while KHAOSGOTT handles the vocals. The band’s auspicious prior releases (a demo from 2015 and the 2018 Horizons MLP, both on the Finnish label Kuunpalvelus) established a foundation for the band to build upon, and the result is the magnificent Empyrée MLP. In both content and spirit, Cénotaphe draws inspiration from a constellation of 19th century French literary and artistic figures, such as Aloysius Bertrand, Théophile Gautier, Charles Beaudelaire, and the painter, Odilon Redon. It is, however, the poet, Stéphane Mallarmé, who casts the longest shadow over the band. Mallarmé’s work is dense with inscrutable and tangled syntax, every poem an arcane cipher; however, despite his modern and unconventional style, Mallarmé tended to rely on stalwart and traditional poetic forms, like the sonnet. Within the framework of these rigid poetic structures, Mallarmé’s language was itself unconstrained, abstract, exquisitely lawless, but also excruciatingly methodical and intentional.

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  The infamous 1998 recording, alternately known as “Recruit for Conflict,” from members of BLASPHEMY, five years after its temporary dissolution in 1993. The only recordings from Blasphemy members during their long hiatus between 1993-1999. A more repetitive and hypnotic brand of black metal than that of Blasphemy, and one that is more akin to Norwegian black metal than the band’s progenitor.

***In service to the deities of ancient Etruria, Nuclear War Now! hereby summons the first complete work of SANGUE, Culś. Although the band first officially revealed itself only two years ago, Sangue draws its lifeblood from the Etruscan forefathers that inhabited its homeland of current-day Italy approximately three millennia ago. By extension, Sangue’s aural manifestations of pagan darkness pay homage to the ancient rites of a civilization whose denizens sought the favor of gods who wreaked havoc by meddling in earthly affairs. Thus, it is only fitting that this cult’s creations resemble a maelstrom of death that threatens those who bear witness. With its 2017 self-titled EP, Sangue unfurled its first two hymns as a sampling of what was to come on this album. One of these tracks, “The Rite of Cosmic Void,” has been re-recorded for inclusion on this full-length. This latter version demonstrates the most significant improvement over the earlier EP, a recording already quite solid itself, in that it is enhanced by a quality of production that is better suited to this style of death metal. The album’s production is much more voluminous and cavernous, and it thereby evokes an increased sense of bleak grandeur.

Antichrist Rise To Power by Departure Chandelier

Departure Chandelier

Antichrist Rise To Power
Nuclear War Now

***BACK IN STOCK!!!  Departure Chandelier’s music shimmers with the aesthetic ardor of apotheosis. It is a communion with the deceased, tracing the pathway of life transmuted into death over dishonor. Although comprised of members of Akitsa and Ash Pool, Departure Chandelier is wholly unique in style and substance and bears little overt resemblance to either of those projects. Recorded nearly a decade ago, Departure Chandelier’s debut album, Antichrist Rise to Power, actually preceded the band’s demo, The Black Crest of Death, The Gold Wreath of War, which was released in 2011 on Tour De Garde. Recorded in a basement at grave-level behind the New York City Marble Cemetery (the oldest cemetery in New York City), established as a repository for the dead in 1831, just a decade after Napoleon’s death. Within the gates of the small graveyard (where photography for the album was taken during a rare snowstorm) each plot is commemorated with a marble tomb. Compositionally, one hears the heavy influence of Bathory and other seminal acts overwritten by the sound of classic French black metal such as Osculum Infame, Bekhira, Chemin de Haine, Cantus Bestiae, and Machiavel.

Awake In Darkness by Doomsayer

Doomsayer

Awake In Darkness
Nuclear War Now

***In celebration of the 30th anniversary of their sole demo from 1992, Awake in Darkness, NWN is proud to present Doomsayer’s legacy on LP for the very first time! This burning triumph- described as “Pestilential Death Metal” by the band back in the early ’90s when they were establishing themselves in the Italian extreme metal scene- combines all of the power of their varied influences, giving both a perfect snapshot of the heavy metal and occult tinged nascent scene in their country as well as an image of a power, creative band that managed to create a single work that still resonates now decades later. Though Doomsayer fits squarely in the saga of other cult Italian bands, it has plenty of its own voice to offer and fans of early extreme metal will be pleasantly surprised at the strength of this long-hidden obscurity. For fans of Varathron, Sadist, and Necrodeath.

Holocaustic Death March To Humanity's Doom by Black Witchery

Black Witchery

Holocaustic Death March To Humanity's Doom
Nuclear War Now

***Fifteen years ago, Black Witchery and Conqueror, both still virtually unknown outside of a small cult of maniacal blasphemers, united for the split release entitled “Hellstorm of Evil Vengeance.” Exploring a style that few North American bands dared approach at that time, Black Witchery and Conqueror inherited their extremist tendencies from the likes of Blasphemy and Sarcofago among others. Looking back, the release can now be regarded as something of a statement of intent in that it signified the establishment of a second wave of Bestial Black Metal and set the course for the future of the genre. Although external circumstances would necessitate the termination of Conqueror’s mission immediately following the release of the split, J. Read continued treading the path of the Superion with Revenge and R. Forster was initiated into the ranks of Blasphemy. Black Witchery also persisted through the years, assuming a well-deserved, prominent place among the bestial legions. Since the split release in 2000, Black Witchery and Revenge have shared numerous stages all over the world and maintained a united front within the underground. Similarly, NWN!, which also began its campaign of atrocities in 2000, established its dominion over the chthonic depths of the Bestial Black Metal underground. Having settled into their respective roles as progenitors of a particular faction of extreme metal, it is time to assemble the unholy triumvirate of Black Witchery, Revenge, and Nuclear War Now! once more. For this release, Black Witchery turn in one of the band’s most primitive and punishing...

Regiments of Death / No Submission by Militia

Militia

Regiments of Death / No Submission
Nuclear War Now

***Though they were a favorite around their hometown of Austin and nearby San Antonio, Militia received scant attention outside of Texas during their short-lived existence from 1984-1986. Formed in 1984 when bassist Robert Wellingham (who, at the time, neither owned nor knew how to play a bass) met drummer Phil Achee, Militia’s origin is inseparable from the story of the heavy metal scene in and around Austin, Texas during the 1980s. With the inclusion of vocalist Mike Soliz, whose powerful, Halford-esque shrills became a defining feature of Militia’s sound, the band established itself as a fixture of the regional metal scene, sharing members and performing live with many notable acts around the area, including Watchtower, Wyzard, and S.A. Slayer, among many others. Militia swiftly progressed, writing original material and perfecting their live performances. During the three years they were together, they recorded two demos—Regiments of Death and No Submission released in 1984 and 1986, respectively—and the highly coveted MLP, The Sybling, privately pressed by the band in an edition of just 100 copies. The two demos, the band’s first and last recordings, depict Militia’s evolution during its brief lifespan. On Regiments of Death, Militia displayed a unique fusion of skill and passion, an amalgamation of the most potent elements of aggressive speed metal and melodic power metal. The second demo, recorded in the wake of several lineup changes, displayed a more “progressive” approach, drawing inspiration from early Queensryche and other similar acts. Now that NWN! has established its permanent base...

FRONT 001

***Abhorrent formed in Sarpsborg, Norway in 1989, during a period in which the now-famous black metal scene was developing in the same area. The most renowned of its founding members was Stian “Occultus” Johansen, who has also been active in Perdition Hearse and co-founded the infamous Helvete record store in Oslo with Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth (of Mayhem notoriety) and Geir “Thrasher” Bratteli. In fact, Occultus was also briefly an official member of Mayhem following Dead’s untimely demise. Abhorrent recorded one live and one studio demo in 1990 before adopting the moniker of Thyabhorrent for an EP and another demo in 1991. Their music reflected the transitional nature of the moment and location, as the more traditional form of death metal assumed an increasingly evil nature, while black metal was taking hold of the Norwegian underground. “Occultus Brujeria” documents this obscure entity’s existence as a compilation of the band’s “Occultus Brujeria” demo, which also includes the same three recorded tracks from its “Death Rides at Dawn” 7″, and some additional bonus tracks. Given that these recordings have not been officially available for well over two decades, “Occultus Brujeria” is an overdue reissue that is sure to satiate all appetites for early Norwegian extreme metal.

Baptized In Goat Blood by Bafomet

Bafomet

Baptized In Goat Blood
Nuclear War Now

***Japan’s BAFOMET formed in the year 2015, but the spirit of their music belongs resolutely in the 1980s. Originally called Sigil of Bafomet, this Saikano trio plays satanic black speed metal in the tradition of the first wave of black metal bands, and does so with a seemingly effortless expertise. On Baptized in Goat Blood, Bafomet shred their way through eleven anthems of true evil metal, with a speed and ferocity rarely heard in modern black metal. The guitar work is razor sharp, the drums relentless, and the bass/vocal onslaught from one Vladphemer the Sodomizer leaves a bloody trail in its wake. Standing firmly in league with fellow countrymen Abigail and Sabbat and recalling the early works of Venom and Bathory, Baptized in Goat Blood keeps the spirit of true black metal alive. First pressing of 250 copies on orange splatter vinyl. Includes 12-inch insert and A3 poster.

Vengeance From Darkness by Death Yell

Death Yell

Vengeance From Darkness
Nuclear War Now

***In the 1980s, South America produced some of the most legendary extreme metal in the genre’s history. While the renowned Brazilian scene undoubtedly cast a long shadow, like minded maniacs in regions like Colombia and Chile were simultaneously creating their own brand of black/death metal. Among the pioneers of the Chilean scene, DEATH YELL stands out as a founding group, and NWN! Productions is proud to present an official reissue of their legendary 1989 demo Vengeance From Darkness. Formed in 1988 in Santiago (after a stint under the name Pestilence), Death Yell played thrashing death metal with a manic intensity with clear influences from Brazilian maniacs such as Sarcofago, Sextrash and Mutilator, with a punk energy that brings to mind Extreme Noise Terro and the UK grind scene. Instrumentally proficient and sonically violent, Death Yell creates a controlled chaos that marries its deathrash roots with a macabre, funerary atmosphere replete with sinister, lurching organ work. Vengeance From Darkness was self-financed and self-released as a cassette by the band, gaining a legendary status in tape trading circles at the time. The prestige of this demo led to some of its tracks being reused on a split 7” with Beherit via Turbo Music in 1991, and another 7” titled Morbid Rites on Seraphic Decay Records in 1992. The band would remain dormant until their reactivation in 2012.
