Live In Chicago 1979 - Sunday Morning Nightmare Vol 1.
Alona's Dream

***Alona's Dream Records and Regressive Films present: THE ONLY ONES Live in Chicago 1979 - Sunday Morning Nightmare Vol 1. This live release documents Chicago performances of the Only Ones as originally aired on Chicago punk DJ Terry Nelson's Sunday Morning Nightmare radio show in 1979. This no nonsense set was recorded by legendary mobile recording guru TIMOTHY POWELL of Metro Mobile Recording. This previously unreleased show finds the Only Ones at the peak of their early career. The set features a solid list of future classics drawn from their first three studio albums, deep cuts and influential hit singles.  The Only Ones were not a typical UK punk band. They evolved out of the pubrock scene and had a rich history in the UK music scene in general. Members previously played with classic groups including Spooky Tooth and Beatstalkers as well as, Peter Perrett's now classic 'Englands Glory'. Their UK chart single 'Another Girl, Another Planet', set the Only Ones apart from the new wave of English rock bands swarming out of the late ’70’s. They had the complexity, range, soul, and songwriting skills lacking in most of their punkier peers. They would cut three essential LPs in the late 1970s and are still considered one of the UKs foremost rock acts. Today they are praised by critics and fans alike for their enduring influence. Terry Nelson's Sunday Morning Nightmare Radio bio (via the Chicago Punk Database): “Sunday Morning Nightmare was (guessing) a weekly show devoted to punk...

Live Davenport, Iowa 1968
Alona's Dream

***Previously unreleased live recording featuring unheard originals from 1960’s psychedelic legends THE CONTENTS ARE. “Until recently, The Contents Are were one of the great forgotten bands of the late 1960s midwestern psychedelic scene. After their masterpiece LP Through You was recorded the band went through their first evolution, switching out bass players LARRY SMITH for MICK ORTON. While honing their new group by hosting a series of live shows in their native Davenport, IA (they were one of the area’s leading draws by this point), CRAIG was recording the band’s sets using his Ampex two track tape recorder. This album is the result of those recordings. Drawn from his archive of live recordings, they represent the band not only finding their footing after adding a new member but also recording a series of live demos which were then shopped to various producers in the hopes of landing a recording deal and wound up being the catalyst that brought them to Jerry Milam’s Golden Voice Recording Co in South Pekin, IL. It was there they would record their second major album Four Each Other, which sat unreleased in the band’s archive until it was released via Golden Voice & Alona’s Dream in 2017, to much acclaim! These are more than just a collection of demos; they represent a band in between making an early psychedelic folk classic in their first album and an expansive acid rock evolution on their second album, with many original songs that were only ever played live....

Kid606’s pursuit of happiness comes to a close with this collection of stellar remixes from his last LP.  Areal records techno guru Basteroid provides a super dynamic non-dancefloor remix of “Blood Stevia Sex magik”. Miffy goes into total late night underground dubby techno club vibes for both of his remixes, channeling the relentless spirit of Berghain, Club Mate and GHB (Minus the Date rape of course.) Rw Smith sings and dances his way through a Genre bending symphonic trap version of “Cloud Sculpting” Reminiscent of Baths, Rick Ross and John Adams. One of our favorite Japanese electronic music composers, MimiCof AKA Midori Hirano, retains the original glitchy uplifting spirit of “Tarsier Treehouse” while adding tasty skittering beats and drippy synthesizers.  Magic Panda does his highly original electro-shoegazey thing as only he can. Is his “Cloud Sculpting” remix better then the original? For the sake ego of Kid606’s ego we will not say, but it’s definitely a close call! AM Version lives in San Francisco and releases house music on Roam Recordings. His über laid back saxophone heavy remix of “Smooth Sailing” is the perfect closer for the EP. It keeps the yacht rock feel of the original while adding some AFX styled analog synthesis and sweet wailing vocals from Alona.

***14-song document of the DIY punk/alternative scene in Peoria, Illinois, from its hardcore roots in the early 1980s through the late '90s. The album highlights out-of-print punk rock anthems, unreleased demos and rare studio tracks alongside extensive liner notes, photos and a scene poster. This compilation is the companion soundtrack to the book Punks In Peoria: Making A Scene In The American Heartland by Jonathan Wright and Dawson Barrett, published by University of Illinois Press. Punks In Peoria documents the evolution of the DIY punk scene in Peoria, Illinois—from its primal beginnings in the early 1980s to the dawn of the digital era. A lovingly curated collection of long-lost gems and hometown favorites from “Anytown U.S.A.,” it connects the varied work of disaffected youth across nearly two decades and multiple “generations” of Peoria punks, performers and scenesters. From Midwest hardcore legends Constant Vomit and Caustic Defiance to the inimitable shock rocker Bloody Mess, the Peoria punk scene was built on the DIY spirit from the very beginning. As it grew beyond the rudiments of hardcore, the Peoria scene mirrored the larger slicing and dicing of post-punk into ever-narrower sub-genres—embracing goth, synth, pop, psychedelia, metal, and more. Amidst the post-Nirvana haze of the early ‘90s, the gritty melodies of Dollface paved the way for a new generation of Peoria youth—some of whom would go on to tour the world in bands like Minsk and Planes Mistaken for Stars. ***BLATANT DISSENT's story is the story of evolution. They started in Dekalb, Illinois, in 1983 as a cover band. Over the next few years, Blatant Dissent developed and recorded their own distinct brand of midwestern indie-skate punk. By 1988, the evolution was complete and they had become Midwest noise-rock stalwarts TAR. Their music had the backbone and energy of hardcore punk but Blatant Dissent were too smart and well informed to play run-of-the-mill uniform hardcore. Their style was also illuminated by the innovations of contemporary bands including Naked Raygun, whose JEFF PEZZATI produced their first session. Also influential were Chicago punk pioneers Trial By Fire as well as innovative national acts like Husker Du, The Minutemen and The Replacements. After an initial demo, Blatant Dissent eventually recorded a total of 22 songs over two sessions between 1985 and 1986. Recorded by IAIN BURGESS and STEVE ALBINI respectively, these sessions offer insight into the development of the group as they tightened their song writing and laid the groundwork for later becoming Tar. During 2021 the original multi-tracks were remixed by the band with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago. The music was subsequently mastered by CARL SAFF and pressed into 160-gram color vinyl in Chicago at Smashed Plastic Record Pressing. 22 song limited edition blue / white swirl color vinyl LP. Comes in 20pt board jacket with full color, four page booklet.

***Naperville, Illinois' PROTAGONISTS formed in the wake of the first wave of Chicago hardcore punk. Instead of being inspired by the first generation weirdo Chicago punks like Silver Abuse and Tutu & The Pirates or the hardcore legion that followed (AOF, ROTA, Negative Element, etc.), Protagonists drew their motivation from sources as diverse as punk icons Buzzcocks, The Dickies and The Damned to prime era '50s and '60s teen anthems (Buddy Holly, Dell Shannon, and The Monkees). The group formed in a Naperville high school, played local talent shows and teen dance parties, and hooked up with older kids (Reaction Formation) who helped them get radio gigs and put out a tape recorded by Phil Bonnet, influential recording engineer and long time friend. The band followed up with a 7” for Reaction Formation’s label Nova which garnered positive reviews but they were shortly after pulled apart by the usual strains on the end of adolescent trajectories. This compilation gathers their original tape, unheard outside of the suburban Chicago teen punk scene, and pairs it with the songs from their hard-to-find 7” EP (originally pressed in 1000 copies in 1985). The b-side features basement demos of original songs recorded by the band as well some great covers which show they could rock as a punk dance band. The Seven Year Locust Returns
Alona's Dream

***END RESULT's 1982 masterpiece The Seven Year Locust Returns on vinyl for the first time! This album was originally dubbed on cassette and distributed among friends in the Chicago punk scene. TSYLR represents End Result at their most formative stage. The recordings presented here contain the brutal roots of what would come later on their excellent, DAVID RILEY (Big Black, Savage Beliefs) produced, Ward 12″. From The Chicago Punk Database: "End Result first rehearsed in July 1979 in a basement near Pill Hill on the south side. They were (ARE!) a well respected experimental / nowave band that had a changing lineup throughout the 1980s. Their style was much different than their “hardcore” peers and featured a style that couldn’t really be categorized by normal punk conventions." The best preserved copy of End Result's hand-dubbed The Seven Year Locust Returns cassette was located in the archive of Chicago experimental institution ONO. It was subsequently and expertly transferred and mastered by Carl Saff. Pressed into vinyl and placed inside a cardboard sleeve for you to buy, rip open and enjoy. Limited white vinyl version: recorded, mastered and pressed in Chicago. Includes printed inner sleeve with rare photos and excellent liner notes.

***When Chicago punk legends STRIKE UNDER broke up in 1981, three of the four members went on to form TRIAL BY FIRE. They were one of the first Chicago bands to play thrash style hardcore and quickly became scene favorites, especially among the younger all ages set. Far from being a by-the-numbers hardcore group, Trial By Fireʼs sound bore a heavy Stranglers and post-punk influence as well. They created a unique repertoire which sits alongside the best of the Effigies, Strike Under and Naked Raygun. In fact, when bassist / vocalist PIERRE KEZDY later joined Naked Raygun, he brought along their classic “Rocks Of Sweden” with him. This album was recorded in 1982 by studio great TIMOTHY POWELL (Effigies, Strike Under, Naked Raygun, Da!) in a warehouse adjacent to the famed birthplace of House music, The Warehouse! These tracks represent a moment when underground music was brave, adventurous and flourishing in the rundown streets of early '80s Chicago. The songs were transferred from the original master tapes by Powell himself and still sound incredibly fresh and relevant in 2017. ***JJ-180 got its start in 1977 when a group of teenagers came together around the art & music that had influenced them growing up in the ‘70s in Santa Cruz. They were: POLIO FERRARI (keyboards), WALLY SOUND (guitar), TORA BROOKS (bass), WALTER MCKEE (guitar), and CAKER CALLOWAY (drums). Their music was a hybrid of the then emerging punk sound as well as ‘60s surf, garage & psychedelic music. The band was a keystone of the Santa Cruz punk scene and organized many important early punk and new wave shows in their hometown. After establishing a local following, they released a single and a few songs on compilations. This is that very single.

The Gilded Hegemony Of Stars by Aloonaluna

The Gilded Hegemony Of Stars
Scioto

***LYNN FISTER's ALOONALUNA project is well known in the cassette world. She has released full length albums on Hooker Vision and Digitalis Limited, plus split cassettes and 7” singles with the likes of Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Ant’lrd and Starry Crowns. She has been featured on Pitchfork’s The Out Door column, Tiny Mix Tapes, and NPR’s All Songs Considered. The Gilded Hegemony of Stars is her new full-length and first release on vinyl. Awash in ambient synths, Fister’s vocals are layered into a spacey murmur. It’s an appropriate aesthetic choice for a record that comments on the way many present their lives online. Says Fister, “Most of the songs were created as a way of coming to terms with millennial culture—with its fragmented morality, narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies, privilege, self-righteousness, definitions, individualistic viewpoint, solipsism etc. Sometimes, I feel alienated and overwhelmed in such a digitized, click-bait, ADD, hook-up cultured, hyper-stylized world. Sometimes art-making seems pointless, as I never felt so weary of interpersonal relationships—which I believe is systemic from current American cultural and socio-political norms. But yet I embrace it and kiss it anyway. I try to wrap my head around a world that I will never be able to understand. My idealized / romanticized pastoral fantasy has been broken again and again, as I try constantly to rebuild a myth.”

***Medical Records presents a reissue of one of Germany’s most interesting records. The German duo ALOA only made one album in 1982, but it is one of the most peculiar and innovative records of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement. Long out of print, somewhat obscure, and very expensive, this record is due for an official reissue. The duo consisting of AL KANZ and MATTIAS BRENDEL both grew up in Kassel, Germany. Though both had different tastes of music, they fused influences and injected them into their own unique blend when they purchased Roland 606 and 808 drum machines plus a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5.  After much development and evolution, the Aloa project came to life. The album explores a whole spectrum of textures, moods, and atmospheres. Ranging from dark complex synthed-out tracks to diverse instrumentation-laced almost Krautrock motifs, this album is definitely one of a kind. From the commanding first track “Weisser Wal” with it’s almost Bryan Ferry style vocals to the atmospheric “Banane Zitrone,” the twists and turns are endless. This is a very sultry record as well evidenced by the band’s constant obsession with sexy women who occupied their time. Definitely will appeal to fans of The Residents, Neue Deutsche Welle, and anything and everything that lives in the outer reaches of synth territory. Sadly the record was overlooked and misunderstood by the press and radio stations alike likely due to it’s obvious unorthodox and experimental interpretation of synthpop. Restored and mastered from the original master tapes by...

***It’s been seven years since The Copyrights released their last album Report, but the wait is finally over. Ahead of the Carbondale, IL punks’ 20th anniversary in 2022, the foursome have returned with their seventh full-length album, Alone in A Dome. Not that you’d know it was the band’s seventh record—across the course of these 12 songs, the band sounds just as vibrant and vigorous, energetic and youthful, as it ever has. Whether that’s because they recorded most of it in the basement of Carbondale’s Lost Cross punk house, where the band was formed all those years ago, is uncertain, but the spirit of that house, of their youth and of the scene in general, is very much alive and kicking for the record’s half-hour runtime.

Alone In The Grave by Bone Sickness

Bone Sickness

Alone In The Grave
20 Buck Spin

The death metal resurgence of the last five years has birthed an ever-expanding spectrum of styles collecting under the genre’s umbrella. Slower and mid-paced death metal has typically been the road for American bands lately—at least those adhering to the original ideals and not the modern tech-mech bastardization that the more stubborn among us choose to ignore. But the American scene has been severely lacking in bands that play the fast ’n’ loose style at which the original US bands were most adept. Enter Bone Sickness, who, after releasing a demo tape and an EP on Detest Records, now offers up their debut 12-inch Alone in the Grave.  Bone Sickness are local to Olympia, WA (also the HQ of 20 Buck Spin) and have the relentless energy and ferocity of a young band that’s lived their lives in a smaller American town away from big-city trends. Not having the luxury of performing at city venues on a regular basis, the band cut their teeth in the Oly punk scene playing as many house shows with non-metal bands as they have clubs opening for “name” bands. The maelstrom of death metal savagery Bone Sickness conjures on Alone in the Grave recalls Repulsion’s Horrified LP and early Master / Deathstrike recordings, and exhumes Napalm Death when still commanded by domineering, barbaric drummer Mick Harris. No Incantation worship or goats ’n’ gasmasks posing; just American death metal disfigured by grindcore. Alone in the Grave represents a new turn (or return) to death...

***REISSUED AT A NEW LOWER PRICE!!! Melbourne’s “Most offensive record label” is pleased to present its second offering, the debut LP from Footscray misfits CUNTZ titled Aloha. Originally self-released by the band in May 2012, recorded by ALEX MACFARLANE, who was at the desk for the critically acclaimed BOOMGATES and CONSTANT MONGREL LPs released in 2012. Homeless was just in initial planning stages when the label head honcho witnessed a particularly violent & bloody CUNTZ show in the basement dungeon of the Grace Darling in April. The head honcho not only came away from the show with a name for his yet-to-be-decided record label, he also had planted the idea of releasing Aloha on vinyl later in the year. The band were excited by the prospect. And so, once the CD had been mastered by MIKEY YOUNG it was into production, and the band started planning their US tour, commencing Sept ’13 and includes an appearance at Gonerfest 10 in Memphis, alongside the Cosmic Psychos, Mudhoney, Wreckless Eric, Quintron and Guitar Wolf. Includes a download. New LP, Solid Mates, to follow shortly. On tour in the USA beginning September 12.

HOMELESS 6

***At a pub in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Shelley and Luc Suer caught a trio of Rowland S. Howard protégés—TIM HOWDEN, JOHN BROOKS and JASON G. BONEHAM, collectively known as HUNGRY GHOSTS—blowing the doors off the place with a wild storm of flickering Fender sparkle, Jaguar growl, bass drum boom, and minimal martial snare. That show and their self-released EP were impressive enough to prompt an invitation to come up from down under and make a new record. In June '99 the trio set up shop at Tribecca Recording, with Steve producing and Luc engineering, and cut fifteen tracks of sweet, outback soul and dusty red ballads that drip, curl, and spark. The 'Ghosts have expertly absorbed the rough, wailing waltzes and swooping, tidal minor movements of their countrymen The Dirty Three (not to mention the barroom baroque of the Boys Next Door brood: Birthday Party, Bad Seeds, These Immortal Souls), but Alone, Alone yields grander rewards—they've significantly expanded the palette by using equal measures of conventional chops and avant technical antics; liberally rotating instruments including electric and acoustic guitars, a wide range of tuned percussion, trap kit, fiddle, accordion, organ; and deftly deploying elements of Spanish, Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian and American idioms. The result is a unique brand of combustive folk music, where primitive punk roots patrol a more mature Morricone/Badalamenti beat.  Yet this is no cliché "soundtrack without a film." Alone Alone's tracks stand alone. Divided into three programs—Before Then, Alone Alone, and No Wake—the album's...

Home Alone On Halloween
Merge

***With Home Alone on Halloween, noted rock band TITUS ANDRONICUS [hereafter +@] celebrate the spookiest of the seasons by staring into the abyss and confronting the bone-chilling terror which lies at the haunted heart of our human experience. Bearing the justly feared catalog number MRG666, the 12-inch EP spans 31 minutes and features three tracks recorded concurrently with the group’s most recent full-length A Productive Cough, offering an autumnal tableau of dread and decay to complement its LP companion’s springtime visions of rebirth and new possibilities. The title track remixes A Productive Cough’s hardest-rocking selection, foregrounding its ominous strings and swelling organ and featuring a soulful new lead vocal from frequent +@ special-teams captain MATT "MONEY" MILLER, while “Only a Hobo” plucks an oft-forgotten gem from the dusty corners of the Bob Dylan songbook to paint a grim portrait of hopes dashed and potential squandered. Eeriest of all is “A Letter Home,” which, across nearly 17 minutes and more than 1,200 words, drags the listener along for a harrowing descent into the darkness and proves definitively that this ceremony is no mere monster mash. Pressed on orange vinyl in an edition of 1.300 copies.

***MOUTHBREATHERS follow-up 7-inch to the In The Red Records release of the “Anxiety / The Creeper” single is said by many to be their most expansive song to date, and that is not because “Die Alone” clocks in at 5 minutes plus. Bleak arrangements over pulsing dead panned drums, slither their way underneath KYLE GOWDY’s aching vocals. The song slides along like a dark cloud until it finally explodes into an all out rage. This Alone Above All Else In Spite Of Everything by Boduf Songs

Boduf Songs

This Alone Above All Else In Spite Of Everything
Kranky

***CHECK STOCK!!! Received a 7.2 rating from Pitchfork. The fourth BODUF SONGS extended play was created using MATHEW SWEET’s standard recording set up of a single microphone and a small array of instruments, but it comes with a few surprises—most notably the prominence of electric guitar, bass and stomping drums on a few tracks. All of the elements that make his previous sound creations so arresting are still present; the impeccable song structures, the minimal approach, the delicate yet dominant singing. The album opens with the naked sound of the hammers of an old upright piano striking strings, an apt metaphor for the lyrical content which is just as raw and exposed. Mathew broadens his vocal approach here, exploring range and employing some unpredictable, well-placed harmonies. This Alone Above All Else In Spite Of Everything is effectively a concept record, and makes for a dramatic journey. Mat states "There is a theme that runs through each song and the track order is paramount to that - it's a hugely important part of making a record work." So pay attention.

We are honored to release ‘A Boy Alone’, a double LP set from Manchester electronic music pioneer Eric Random. Best known for his early recordings for New Hormones and Les Disques du Crépuscule and collaborations with Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks), Cabaret Voltaire and Nico. As an original member of The Tiller Boys with Shelley, Random injected a healthy dose of Krautrock into the dour Manchester post-punk scene in 1978/79 before going solo the following year. Random’s first 7” “Subliminal”/“23 Skidoo” was released in 1981 via Les Disques du Crépuscule and explored ominous sonic surrounds. That same year also saw the release of a second 7" single on New Hormones, “Dow Chemical Company”/ “Skin Deep”. Both tracks offered bubbling, rhythmic sound patterns, and were the first to feature other musicians that would become know as The Bedlamites. Consisting of Lynn Walton on vocals, Ian Runacres and Andy Diagram of Dislocation Dance, and bassist Wayne Worm, aka Wayne Sedgeman. Their debut 12” single “Subliminal Seduction”/“Bedlam-a-Go-Go” was released in 1982 through Plurex, mixing arid funk textures and sparse melodies. That same year the group contributed proto chill-out track “6.55” to Plurex compilation ‘Hours’ and the highly filmic track “In Cassette Conference” to the Touch cassette package ‘Feature Mist’. In 1983, Random spent several months in the Himalayas with a group of musicians from the Kulu Valley and studied non-Western instruments such as tabla. On returning to Manchester, Random convened a new group of Belamites including Walton, Sedgeman and drummer Graham Dowdall aka Dids of...

Fix It Alone by Heavy Times

Heavy Times

Fix It Alone
Hozac

***Chicago's most hated band on the world's most hated record label, what could go wrong? But don't believe what you've read in the papers, HEAVY TIMES are certainly back with their massive third album, mainlining 18 tracks in 33 minutes for maximum impact to your safely guarded danger zones, and simultaneously scoring the soundtrack to your summer of sickness. Picking up where the razored edge of Jacker left off and screaming off into the stratosphere where their heavenly guitar interplay weaves a complicated yet natural web around their unique and peerless punk sound, Heavy Times have raised the bar undoubtedly, and you'd better be ready. Recorded with COOPER CRAIN from Bitchin' Bajas/CAVE, this album jumps out of the grooves and shakes you senseless from one song style to the next, displaying a range and variety most modern punk bands wouldn't even understand, let alone be able to keep up with. Through all the dizzying highs, the sobering lows, and the creamy middles, Heavy Times are quickly mastering their form roght before our eyes and it's never been more evident as on the Fix It Alone LP, one incredible album that's a benchmark for modern punk, with all the hooks you just can't find in books.

Again Shall Be / Alone Walkyng by Hades

Hades

Again Shall Be / Alone Walkyng
Nuclear War Now

***A reissue of the band's first album from 1994 along with their debut demo from 1993. Countless words have been written about the black metal scene that flourished in Norway during the early 1990s, usually focused on the same few bands—Mayhem, Immortal, Darkthrone, etc.—that have come to be synonymous with the phrase “Norwegian Black Metal.” If those bands formed the nucleus of the scene, HADES was in tight orbit around them. After playing in AMPUTATION and IMMORTAL, guitarist JORN INGE TUNSBERG (who was also playing in OLD FUNERAL at the time) united with drummer REMI ANDERSEN to conjure a new entity known as Hades. Bored with bands more focused on speed than songwriting, the two took a multi-dimensional approach, slowing down the pace and emphasizing atmosphere and composition. Together with bassist and vocalist JANTO GARMANSLUND and second guitarist ANDREAS NAGELSETT, they recorded the three-song Alone Walkyng demo in 1993. Rather than settle for crude production, Hades recorded the demo at the legendary Grieghallen Studio, which Tunsberg knew from having previously recorded there with Amputation, and where many prominent Norwegian bands recorded their early material. Among those who ended up with a copy of the Alone Walkyng demo was JON JAMSHID, who had recently founded Full Moon Productions, one of the first black metal labels in the United States. Via handwritten letter, Jamshid expressed his desire to put out Hades’ debut as one of the first releases on the label. The band agreed, and, in 1994, following Nagelsett’s dismissal, they recruited...

Die With Dignity / Leave Me Alone by Watery Love

Watery Love

Die With Dignity / Leave Me Alone
Siltbreeze

***Another two shots of bilious commentary courtesy of Philadelphia's best band at the moment. The A-side is penned by Richard Charles; a litany of condescending, sneering lyrics behind the roar of what sounds like the gear shaft of a Kensington garbage truck being stripped out and blazing a path of fire down Girard Ave. You know, the kind of good timey tunage you can only light up somewhere between Mecht Mensh & Iron Cross. The flip is an interpretation of a song written by Louis Allan Reed. But Watery Love's cover eschews all manner of hip, uptown vibrato found on the original, preferring to accessorize their stud w/the leather & switchblade swagger needed in a sketchy, downtown milieu. You know, the kind of controlled lunacy you can only sniff out somewhere between John Cale & Chain Gang. Thick black vinyl pressing housed in a sweet high gloss sleeve. One time edition of 330.

Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind b/w I Want To Be Alone
Dicristina Stair Builders

In advance of the forthcoming double-CD compilation of Vashti's early (pre-'Just Another Diamond Day') recordings from 1964 - 1967, DiCristina is issuing a  limited pressing of 1000 copies of this historic 7” single. Originally released way back in 1965 on the Decca label (as just 'Vashti', no Bunyan), 'Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind' was actually the young London-based singer's debut record.Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song was handed to Vashti by Rolling Stones manager / guru Andrew Loog Oldham, who had recently discovered her via an industry friend. Vashti was put in the studio to record the song with the backing of a full orchestra. The track was backed by her own beautiful song, 'I Want To Be Alone' on the B-side and released as a 7” single in May 1965.Despite a whirlwind of promotion around the release and some very positive reviews, the single flopped and Vashti subsequently left the Decca label to pursue more pared-down ambitions, recording a further single ('Train Song' / 'Love Song') for Columbia in 1966, before returning again to Andrew Oldham and the independent Immediate label he had just started. There she recorded three more singles ('Winter Is Blue' / 'Coldest Night Of The Year' / 'I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind') between 1966 - 1967, yet each of these remained infuriatingly unreleased, leading to Vashti's disenchantment with the music industry and disappearance for the Isle of Skye and a colourful if obscure...

New Dimensional by Energy Slime

Energy Slime

New Dimensional
Mint

Alongside the starry-eyed synth-pop and minor-key melancholia of his self-titled debut, Vancouver’s Jay Arner has mastered the art of deadpan absurdity. Oddball jokes and non-sequiturs linger around the edges of computer-animated music videos and sketchbook scribbles transformed into t-shirts. Now, joined by his partner in crime Jessica Delisle, these poker-faced put-ons have been conjured into a blob of pure sonic ectoplasm. Say hi to Energy Slime!  New Dimensional is the duo’s primordial ooze, cramming ten songs into a jam-stacked thirteen minutes and two sides of a 7-inch. Like Robert Pollard in quick-hitter mode, or a circuit-fried Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson, the pair creates way-out musical miniatures. Energy Slime’s enchanting earworms range from the fuzzed-out glam stomp of “Bustin’ Up” to the stately Eno pomp of “Mother Brother Sister Father.” The breezy blue sky-ride of “Only Clouds” crash lands on the space cruise of “Star on the Ground,” after a 34-second huff of “Gas in a Bag.” Delisle grabs the mic for the shimmering Cyndi Lauper sock-hop of “Cool Ship II” while Arner shares his medical credentials with the feather-banged headbang of “Why U Wanna.” Road trippin’ ramble-riffs follow “Trial of the Mind” onto the rattling trail of “So Long Snakes.” And the crown-jeweled centerpiece is a lascivious tribute to one half of Stop Podcasting Yourself titled (natch) “Graham Fucks the Queen.”

Despite only one proper album to their name, the group is relatively prolific, having released a number of EPs and appeared on many compilations and splits (with the likes of Unearthly Trance and Zoroaster, to name a few) since forming in 2004. Embracing the Lightless Depths is their long-awaited sophomore full-length—the follow-up to Dwellers in the Twilight (Parasitic Records, 2007)—and comes on the heels of last year’s single-track, 30-minute EP Buried Beneath Aeons. Delivering their strongest material to date, the album takes Aldebaran’s colossal funeral doom to its monolithic and monstrous zenith.

Kleptophonica by Novex

Novex

Kleptophonica
Zero To One

***Along with a liberal dose of borrowed beats and noises, the eleven songs on Kleptophonica include healthy splatterings of cassette deck tomfoolery, Speak'n'Spell abuse, typewriter percussion, lap steel warblings, echo nonsense, singing-into-the-washing-machine experiments, push-button sample blasts, as well as more conventional instrumentation like drum sets, maracas and keyboards. Using varying degrees of "unauthorized remixing," Agent Nova and Mor-X (both veterans of Milk Cult and Steel Pole Bath Tub) aim each song in its own direction, as melodies and rhythms are added and twisted and stretched on top of tape loops and scratchy thrift store records. The result is a softer, gentler sort of Frankenstein. More song-oriented then previous Milk Cult records, Kleptophonica is also a return to more basic recording. Whereas Project M-13 took about a month to record and an exhausting two years to edit, Kleptophonica, recorded in Olympia, Washington, at Mag Rec One, was completed in five days.

Acrid Plains by Saros

Saros

Acrid Plains
Profound Lore

Along with Hammers of Misfortune, Asunder, Grayceon, and Ludicra--bands currently raising a fervor in the Bay Area--Saros is regarded as one of the most promising new acts to arrive on the underground metal scene.  Comprised of members from Amber Asylum, legendary black metal act Weakling, and Bastard Noise, Saros's unique progressive and epic extreme metal tastefully blends many styles. The four-piece draws influence from black metal, classic Bay Area metal (...And Justice For All-era Metallica), technical death metal (Symbolic-era Death), neo-classical chamber music (Saros could be considered the metal sister band of Amber Asylum, as singer/guitarist Leila Rauf is a full-time member of both bands while mastermind Kris Force makes an appearance on Acrid Plains), and neo-folk (Agalloch, Death in June).   Produced by the legendary Billy Anderson (known for his work with High on Fire, Neurosis, Sleep, The Melvins, and more), this gem will only serve to further the band's growing reputation.

Feel It

***Right alongside a stellar upcoming single and 2018 LP on the esteemed Beach Impediment label, NYC's VANITY offer up another double A-sider for Feel It. Anticlimax rolls out of the gate with a cool, Stones-esque confidence, resting on the otherworldly lead guitar of "GROOVY" MIKE LIEBMAN (formerly of VEXX and RIK & THE PIGS). This irresistibly catchy, glammed-out rocker is backed up with "A Seat at the Table" quickening the pace atop a brilliant walking bass line. While Vanity have excelled in everything from Oi! to Britpop in their fascinating time as a band, both the songwriting and production on this single may be the band's highest mark yet. Toxic Planet by Cobra Man

Cobra Man

Toxic Planet
Goner

Released alongside the full length video from The Worble skate collective, Toxic Planet is Cobra Man’s follow up to their 2017 debut album New Driveway Soundtrack and is their second for Memphis, TN based Goner Records. The band initially formed to create music for a series of skate videos for Thrasher Magazine, which is how Goner founder Eric Friedl (The Oblivians) discovered the band.  This is an album for a new way of life. The Los Angeles power disco duo blends the essence of classic disco funk, the raw power of warehouse punk, and the supernatural qualities of their favorite slasher films to create something unique. This record marks a step forward in production, arrangement and instrumentation from their more stripped down effort, making their sound more dynamic while still managing to retain that raw vitality that characterized their debut.  These songs bring sounds both mysterious and obscure into the late night purple light on a smoke-filled dance floor. It’s a place you do not know, you’ve only heard of it. If there’s one thing you do know, the future is: Toxic Planet.

***Nearly four years after delivering a handful of demos along with a live tape then seemingly dropping off the radar release wise, Bloomington's LAFFING GAS swing back at any and all credulous hardcore punk enthusiasts who might have forgotten about them or thought they'd just run their course and faded into obscurity as so many tend to do. It's a Beautiful Day in the Gulch showcases 10 blazing tracks of classic Midwestern hardcore punk, the vibe of which is more in debt to the revolutionary aural offerings of the early Touch and Go and/or Version Sound labels or even Kick N' Punch Records as a slightly more modern reference than what the region has become synonymous with in more recent times. The creatures known as Mondo Drag hailed from deep along the banks of the wild Mississippi River where they created ominous, spiritual, savage psychedelic revival sounds. Summoned to the edge of the Earth, they journeyed west, collecting new sounds reminiscent of desert scapes, acid dreams, all-night prog vinyl spinning and a dark galaxy of protometal swirls, exalting the band unto new, wickedly brilliant horizons. Now settled in the deep realms of Oakland, the ensemble continues to create cosmically proportioned, churning jams evocative of a rainbow of obvious inspirations but also numinous new sounds emerging from the organ - heavy riffs. If you love Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Can, Atomic Rooster, Hawkwind, Budgie, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple ,Italian prog, Krautrock in general, and heavy space-outs....get into Mondo Drag. They'll knock your socks off, let your hair down and take you on a mind's eye exploration you won't soon forget. Though they exude love for the spiraling tapestry of heavy psychedelia of the past, they are on a rock and roll mission all their own: an unearthed prog band, futuristic in their time capsule, rocketing forward through the depths, gathering the sounds of space itself.

375 Images Of Angels by Behavior

Behavior

375 Images Of Angels
Iron Lung

***John Cage related this anecdote: “One evening I was walking along Hollywood Boulevard, nothing much to do. I stopped and looked in the window of a stationary shop. A mechanized pen was suspended in space in such a way that, as a mechanized roll of paper passed by it, the pen went through the motions of the same penmanship exercises I had learned as a child in the third grade. Centrally placed in the window was an advertisement explaining the mechanical reasons for the perfection of the operation of the suspended mechanical pen. I was fascinated, for everything was going wrong. The pen was tearing the paper to shreds and splattering ink all over the window and on the advertisement, which, nevertheless, remained legible.” This little musing somehow rhymes with the spirit of BEHAVIOR’s 375 Images of Angels, unique “musical” approach to punk. The very essence of punk is a contemptuous “fuck you” to convention anyway, or at least a troubled groping for new avenues of self creation. There is a simple beauty in deconstruction, in calculated naivety, in messes, in processes and in the plain night air of Los Angeles. …Angels dances like a dog shaking off a swim. ...Angels is as deliberate as it is free. Don’t we all want this dichotomy in our lives? The drive to make our time our own and the permission to chase joy? Includes a download.

Andre has self-released a few limited edition CDRs but Taeglich Brot is his first proper solo release. Recorded in Berlin over the course of a week, the album mines the same conversational, stripped-down folk of Herman Dune with a dozen songs that veer from four-piece pop to solo, acoustic torch songs. The Silvertones were steeped in the grand tradition of Jamaican vocal trios along with other greats such as The Heptones, The Abyssinians and The Kingstonians. Formed in 1964 by Delroy Denton, Keith Coley and Gilmore Grant, the group recorded under a variety of names in the ska and rocksteady era for Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle and Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One, before hooking up with producer Lee “Scratch” Perry. Originally released in 1973, The Silvertones’ debut Silver Bullets was recorded at Perry’s Black Ark studio with vocal tracks captured at King Tubby’s Dromilly Avenue studio in a marathon, all-night session. While firmly planted in roots reggae, Silver Bullets’ dense harmonies and relaxed vibe harken back to rocksteady. The album marks an interesting point in Jamaican music where the past and the future are visible in the grooves of a single LP—from classic rocksteady-tinged love songs like “That’s When It Hurts” and “Rock Me In Your Soul” to the Rasta anthem “Rejoice Jah Jah Children.” Antarctica Starts Here presents the first widely available domestic release of Silver Bullets. This reissue is part of an archival series that focuses on Trojan’s essential ’60s and ’70s catalogue. Liner notes by JR Gonne.

You Want It Real by Lié

Lié

You Want It Real
Mint

With ties to techno and a penchant for earth-rumbling post-punk—along with a staunch willingness to stop rape culture, privilege and patriarchy in its tracks—there’s no denying that Vancouver trio lié [pronounced “lee-ey” and lower-case preferred] are an integral force in the global underground. Since forming in 2013, they’ve only grown louder, brasher and more intense as they’ve developed their sound across numerous releases and a near endless stream of international DIY tours. That momentum has culminated in You Want It Real, an eight-song album. This fourth album expands on previous themes with an assured intensity and plenty of world-weary lyrics. Sonically, lié’s recordings have unlocked the full-bore wall of sound that’s present in their live shows. That’s due in part to the work of legendary punk producer Jesse Gander (White Lung, Japandroids), who has helped unlock a further disharmony of melody and feedback in the band’s relentless aggression. While the band has previously made a name for eschewing vagaries in favor of direct confrontation in their lyrics, this album leaves plenty open to interpretation. As guitarist and vocalist Ashlee Luk explains, the goal was to let some musical and metaphorical moments stand on their own. “Part of the shift away from the direct lyrics of previous albums is also in part to encourage the listener, (and the interviewer) to focus on the music as well, not just the lyrics,” Luk says. Musically, the sheer thrill of the album is the trio’s ability to build enormous and complex compositions within the...

Peter Zummo, known for his work alongside Arthur Russell shares a new sonic exploration titled Deep Drive 2+, a revisit of his 2014 album Deep Drive. The record exudes a magisterial air of calm and also boasts what can be described as an elemental quality. Diving deep and soaring high, Deep Drive 2+ can float equally effectively through air and water. This new take on the Deep Drive material feels utterly different. One which—to use a nautical metaphor—finds itself in balmier waters and much more pleasingly adrift from its moorings. ***The first duo album from Vancouver-based guitarist & oud player Gordon Grdina alongside legendary drummer Jim Black! This isn't the first meeting of course, as Grdina & Black have spent time together touring and recording with Grdina's Nomad Trio (also featuring Matt Mitchell), but Martian Kitties is a much looser and in some ways more exciting affair than their previously released recordings together. Grdina has made a name for himself as an inventive composer beyond just his incredible playing skills, but Martian Kitties finds both Grdina and Black having fun in a freely improvised setting! Comprised of 13 tracks that range from shorter vingettes to longer meditations, Grdina and Black let it fly—from the opening fire of "Martian Kitties" through lopping rhythms of "Short Scale" through the ending beauty in the hymn-like "Bear Handler." Grdina & Black stretch their skills about as far as they can. You can truly hear them having fun, like a throwback to a classic "blowing" session, allowing them to explore more possibilities—the gentle droning of "Black Lodge" (which I truly hope is a Twin Peaks reference since it sounds straight from the show), and the electronics laden "Fuzzy Goats." Martian Kitties might not be a landmark or [insert hyperbolic statement here] type album, but it sure is a helluva lot of fun and grows upon repeated listens. Grdina has continued to make his mark as a guitarist and Black here (now 3 decades into his career) makes us all wonder why he doesn't get more...

Locked Down And Stripped Back by Wedding Present

Wedding Present

Locked Down And Stripped Back
Happy Happy Birthday To Me

***Locked Down And Stripped Back includes twelve home recordings of WEDDING PRESENT favorites along with two previously unreleased songs: ‘You’re Just A Habit That I’m Trying To Break’ and ‘We Should Be Together’. The latter was originally recorded—but never released—by Britpop favorites, SLEEPER. With each band member recording and filming their parts at home due to lockdown restrictions, the recording process was far from easy, but the end result is, as always, typically satisfying. From the swagger of ‘A Million Miles’ (George Best, 1987) and ‘California’ (Hit Parade, 1992), to the joyous, previously unreleased ‘We Should Be Together’—featuring a special guest appearance from Sleeper singer LOUISE WENER—Locked Down And Stripped Back is an unexpected treat. Elsewhere, a re-working of ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends'—originally released as a single in 1986—and a truly epic version of ‘Crawl’ (3 Songs EP, 1990), despite their ‘stripped back’ delivery, still pack a proverbial punch, while ‘You’re Just A Habit That I’m Trying to Break’—a new song co-written with new guitarist JON STEWART—is classic Wedding Present. Furthermore, bassist MELANIE HOWARD takes over vocal duties on the sumptuous ‘Sports Car’ (Mini, 1995), while none of DAVID GEDGE's famous sardonic wit is lost on the majestic ‘My Favourite Dress’ (George Best, 1987).

***BACK IN STOCK!!! Burying '60s sing-alongs and dance crazes beneath waves of reverb and giddy thud, Ty Segall has carved out his own shelf in the San Francisco neo-psych garage alongside local compatriots and collaborators Sic Alps and Thee Oh Sees. After shattering the Bay Area underground as a frantic one-man band that was devoured by the local press, Segall has now given up the solo act for a three-piece group that destroys sonic and melodic boundaries with manic glee. Using an array of acoustic and electronic instruments alongside field recordings, Chantal Michelle conducts an anxious ensemble of sounds, inviting comparison to Lamin Fofana or Rachika Nayar. Her third solo album, 'Broken to Echoes' is Chantal Michelle's attempt to show how beauty can exist even as reality itself seems to disintegrate. She figures this out by offsetting traditionally pretty elements like the soaring choral vocals on opening track 'Departure of Light' with more unsettling instrumentation. 'Breathing Water' appears to grow from feedback and white noise, and vocals from Eliana Glass here sit awkwardly in the empty space, joined eventually by doomy strings and cavernous reverb. On 'Celestia', Chantal matches black metal-adjacent nursery rhyme synths with oscillating rainfall and distant woodwind blasts, playing up the album's theatricality. But she's keen not to let anything get too distracting - with any darkness there's usually light, and vice versa. 'Blue in Blue' is as refreshing as a fairy fountain in a Zelda game, and while 'Opening' is as dark as anything we've heard from Lustmord recently, the album's title track is comparatively sunny.

We are stoked to present the vinyl debut of MUTILATED TONGUE. 10 fast well crafted hardcore tracks played to the brink by these Oakland hc/punk veterans. Very stoked on this album! "Mutilated Tongue was formed in the summer of 2017, with the goal to play music reflecting our shared appreciation of the international, underground and hardcore-punk community of the '80s right up to now. All three members played together in Look Back And Laugh in the early 2000s. We've got BRIAN on guitar and vocals, TOBIA on bass and MOSES on drums. The band's main influences orbit around groups like So Much Hate, Youth Of Today, Raw Power and the FU's. Like most everyone else, we try to offer our own sound, but our music represents a lifetime of listening to DIY hardcore/punk and it's reflected without shame. We watch, listen and learn from the best!!! We are out to have a good time playing the music that we love and continuing with the intensity and spirit of the bands who laid the groundwork."

***This is still hard to even fathom, let alone anywhere near realistic, but HoZac Archival Records is proud to present a little piece of history for you here, which, if you are still unexposed, will knock your "punk clock" back a few years, resetting your concept of what punk evolved from, where punk germinated from, and how unhinged the Midwest (Ohio in particular) was in comparison to the East & West Coasts in the days before the Ramones & Sex Pistols records littered the land. The Cleveland-based (and formerly Columbus) ELECTRIC EELS were unrivaled in terms of sonic mayhem for 1974/1975, especially for the Midwest, where extremities in music were very much unwelcome and were not given the opportunities that the art scenes of the coasts got to foster. Despite the fact that this band was the starting point for not only NICK NOX, later of THE CRAMPS, it must be understood that this was not composed, blues-based Stooges-style grunt, gorgeous VU-type noise, glammy Alice Cooper-style grime, or high-frequency bombast like the MC5. This was an entirely new species emerging from the primordial ooze of the fertile crescent of a cesspool that birthed the 70s version of punk as we know it, this was true madness captured on tape, catchy and infectious insanity flowing through the air that never, EVER had a chance during it's time, and this is one of the reasons the eels have such creedence. It's no surprise that it wasn't until worldwide punk was in full...

Along with Fugazi and Leatherface, they helped create the bedrock that defines the ‘Gainesville sound.’ As much as I discredit the root idea that such a sound even exists or is quantifiable to such a finite point, I will at least concede that there are certain key influences for many a young (at heart) local miscreant. The fact that twenty-one years after NR played a legion hall in Gainesville, we are putting out a record that not only stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best NR album, but perhaps surpasses, well, this blows me away. I have a hard time finding words that express how much (JEFF) PEZZATI’s voice shakes me to the core. Crafting the music and bringing the workhorse/powerhouse ethic are JEFF DEAN, MIKE SOUCY, and PETE MITTLER, who have truly risen to the occasion. They have been in countless Chicago bands, and continue to split their time with several noteworthy, exceptional bands, including THE METHADONES and FOUR STAR ALARM. Energy. Focus. Intensity. As if it could get any better, the album was recorded by J. ROBBINS, who also makes appearances on various songs. He really brought out the best in the band and songs, amplifying and directing, especially in the vocal harmonies and melodies. Pezzati turned in vocals on the last PAINT IT BLACK, and DAN YEMIN returns the favor here. BOB NANNA also lends his inimitable pipes to the mix."—Var (No Idea). Pressed on colored vinyl. ***It blows my mind that a single person, let alone a group of people, is able to get anything done in New York City. It's a non-stop claustrophobic hustle. You gotta fight just to get to the train that will probably be delayed and covered in a stranger's blood. Isn't everyone a stranger? Maybe it is that very environment that influences some of the best music of the Americas. It would certainly explain WARTHOG's brutish hardcore punk wildness. Our boys are gearing up to hurt some people. Get mean. Recorded and mastered at the same sessions as the Exterminate Me 7" on Katorga Works.

Radiation Breeze by Richard Rose

Richard Rose

Radiation Breeze
In The Red

“When new projects are discussed, I sometimes hear a disclaimer along the lines of, ‘this band isn’t reinventing the wheel,’ to which I want to know what’s everyone’s so apologetic about. The wheel was a pretty good invention—good luck getting anywhere without one. So let’s consider a redefinition, instead. Los Angeles based quintet Richard Rose may or may not feature prominent players from bands including but not limited to Ex-Cult, GØGGS, OBN III’s, Snooty Garbagemen, Bad Sports, Hooveriii and Stress Group…but as much as said bands were amongst the best and brightest on offer in Memphis, Houston and Austin, this new amalgamation is a bolder proposition.  “Without question, there’s echoes of their past work—the malevolent vocal presence of Laurence Richard and guitar virtuosity of Thomas Rose in particular—but Richard Rose’s first full-length thoroughly ups the ante on the band’s 2019 debut In The Red EP. The wheels in question have plowed thtough the respective discographies of Michigan / Australian bands you know and love, sure, but these guys have found their own voice in a shockingly brief matter of time. Simply put, they’ve fashioned an instant rock classic…there might be a handful of bands in America with this kind of confidence, but in most other instances it’s unwarranted. They don’t possess Richard Rose’s intellect, instrumental prowess, musical range or sense of purpose.  “Finally, I will not insult your intelligence by claiming Richard Rose scale these lofty heights without artifice. That they insist on performing under dubious pseudonyms (Laurence...

Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live In Geneva by Creation Is Crucifixion

Creation Is Crucifixion

Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live In Geneva
Robotic Empire

Pittsburgh tech-metal hactivists Creation Is Crucifixion emulate Lazarus with a double-LP collecting their last recordings along with an impressive live set. The “final” recording by the band’s last active lineup, the long-rumored nine-minute opus “Antenna Builder” brilliantly merges their heavy technical metal along with the noise passages for which they are reknowned. The lineup’s similarly oppressive Rerecorded Splits tracks, some of the highest-fidelity recordings from the band’s extensive output, fleshes out the first disc in this gatefold double-LP package. Accompanying the studio material is a live LP from a classic set recorded on the last Creation Is Crucifixion European tour, captured live in Geneva during May of the millennial year. These fifteen-year-old recordings showcase tracks from across the band’s catalog, with a higher clarity than some of their raw studio recordings. Specifically mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, the Antenna Builder + Rerecorded Splits / Live in Geneva 2xLP comes housed in a stark black-and-white gatefold jacket with gold ink overlaid. A digital download of the full release is included.

Fat Possum

***"How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars is an introspective record of songs which were written alongside those that appeared on Ignorance. It is intended not to be a follow up, but to be a companion piece, a piece of reflection and quiet, meant to hold stillness in the aftermath. It was recorded live, as a performance; an improvisation, with a group of Toronto jazz musicians. I imagined it as a record of ballads; simple, pure, almost naive, but speaking to many of the same realities as Ignorance does. I see the two albums as two halves of the same coin; the moon and sun, a photograph and a photonegative." Pressed on gold vinyl.

Burnt Ones / Mallard, The

Mallard, The / Burnt Ones
Mt. St. Mtn.

***BURNT ONES picks up where it left off on the LPs Black Teeth & Golden Tongues and You’ll Never Walk Alone. Fuzzed out glam rock of the highest order on a release that fits the aesthetic of psych rock juggernauts Burger Records and Castleface Records. The vocals are more discernible and the instrumentals are tightened on this terrific sophomore effort. 1960s pop themes intertwine with fuzzed out psychedelic rock in an unabashed celebration of all things glam. On earlier releases, the vocals of lead-singer MARK TESTER often got lost in Burnt Ones all-encompassing wall of sound. Such is not the case here. The reverb-heavy vocals ride a propulsive crest of fuzzed out guitars. It’s a much bigger sound than any four-piece has a right to offer. THE MALLARD are an inside-out-echo-laser-garage-psych-rock four-piece from San Francisco. Their home fried songs harness the naked abandon of ‘60s punk (think earliest Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd), but inject the form with a deranged spirit all their own. Close attention to texture and dynamics allow the band to explore unusual terrain—to grant access into unexpected realms of beauty and terror... with dessert. Limited to 500 copies on two-color vinyl packaged in f-color cover jackets with debossed overprint and artwork by JAY HOWELL.

Aum Rifle

A Peal Of Bells
Shrimper

The Aum Rifle as documented here is Alex and Cari Ganowsky and John Thill, along with a loose confederation of collaborators from seaside Seattle and scorched-earth Riverside, California, their hometown. To date they’ve produced a few handmade limited edition CDRs comprised of outdoor major-key folk tunes and environmental soundscapes infiltrated by tape noise, TV broadcasts, and local methamphetamine culture. The music inhabits a dusty, rusted landscape, fetishized in their songs. Other work includes recording camping trips to the Olympic Peninsula and Death Valley National Park. A Peal Of Bells is the product of time divided between the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, moving from slowest “quiet-time” dirges to a pots-and-pans racket, sometimes within the confines of one song. The Aum Rifle and their various collaborators play banjos, accordions, tape loops, trees and hand-crafted musical monstrosities in, around, and outside the trappings of traditional song structure. They’ll be taking their semiacoustic ideologies and rusted metal on the road in July and August 2004 up and down the West Coast and throughout the Midwest.  • Self-released CDRs have garnered top ten status on underground radio stations KFJC and KSPC, and have quickly sold out via mail order • A Los Angeles presence with other upside-out noise makers Amps For Christ and Child Pornography • Radio by AAM, publicity by Wishing Tree • File next to The Sunburned Hand Of The Man and The Godz • Only hippies kill hippies

***No matter who he's on stage or recording with at the moment, PAUL CAPORINO alone has always been M.O.T.O., aka MASTERS OF THE OBVIOUS. He formed the band in 1981 in New Orleans and has been playing an infectious blend of garage, '70s punk and Brill Building worthy pop ever since. M.O.T.O. released more than fifteen cassette albums between 1985 and 1999. Virtually all were fuzzy 4-track recordings with Paul layering guitar, bass and vocals over a crude drum machine. The lyrics are filled with dick jokes, love themes and smart-assed social commentary. The music is lo-fi, hook-laden pop.  Motoerectus was released in very limited quantities in 1987. This album represents some of M.O.T.O.'s last 4-track recordings before relocating to Boston. Although it's still showing much of the New Orleans / early years goofiness, there are a handful of tracks hinting at the slightly more serious pop sensibilities to come with M.O.T.O.'s '90s and beyond releases. Burnt Ones have been Castle Face favorites for years, and last year’s You’ll Never Walk Alone on Burger was the one for which they kicked themelves repeatedly for not getting to first.  The label is very honored to present their third record, Gift. Far more psychedelic than their previous work, the album may be a bit of a surprise to fans on first listen. A potent blend of wide-eyed strummers on shifting sands is punctuated by blinking oscillators, left turns into wispy sound collage and tape manipulations, drug-rug-wrapped lushness and telephone whispers from a supremely stoned sounding Mark Tester, the guide through this cultish and vaguely sinister headphone-scape. It’s a woozy and a woolly one.

When the band didn't record or play as much as Paul would have liked those first few years, he turned to his 4-track. He put down all vocals, guitar and bass tracks over a toy, Mattel Synsonics drum machine. Initially, these recordings were only planned as demos of new songs, but Paul was so satisfied with the results, he decided to release them to the public. M.O.T.O. would go on to release more than fifteen cassette albums from 1985-1999. Each one filled with an abundance of dick jokes and social commentary alike. Theurgia Goetia Summa by Imprecation

Imprecation

Theurgia Goetia Summa
Nuclear War Now

***"Formed in 1991 and hailing from Houston, Imprecation are among the few bands from that era—along with such notable acts as Absu and Divine Eve—that were responsible for securing the legacy of death metal in Texas. The band began with guitarist Phil Westmoreland and drummer Ruben Elizondo, departed from a band called Dark Reign to pursue a different sound with a new project. Originally called Undertaker, the band underwent several lineup and stylistic changes before it coalesced into Imprecation with the addition of bassist Mark Beecher, guitarist Victor Fernandez, and vocalist Dave Herrera. Influenced by revered death metal acts like Entombed, Morbid Angel, and Immolation, as well as black metal pioneers Beherit, Blasphemy, and Profanatica, Imprecation enshrouded their tightly wound, intricately structured songs within a dense and opaque atmosphere. Like many of their peers in the underground scene at the time, there was a darker dimension to their style of death metal, channeling malefic forces and conjuring hellish visions."—J. Campbell. Theurgia Goetia Summa compiles the band's demos recorded between 1992 and 1994, along with four tracks from 2012.

(Vol. 2) Locked Down And Stripped Back by Wedding Present

Wedding Present

(Vol. 2) Locked Down And Stripped Back
Happy Happy Birthday To Me

***Locked Down And Stripped Back Volume Two features home recordings of Wedding Present and Cinerama classics, along with a previously unreleased song: ‘That Would Only Happen In A Movie.’ There is a bevy of guest stars on the album. Jon Stewart (of Platinum-album-selling Sleeper fame) reprises his new role as Wedding Present guitarist but is joined here by some Wedding Present members of old. Peter Solowka, from the band’s first line-up appears on ‘Nobody’s Twisting Your Arm’ playing his second instrument, the accordion, while Hit Parade guitarist Paul Dorrington contributes to a re-working of the Top 30 single ‘Blue Eyes.’ Long-time Wedding Present and Cinerama bass player Terry de Castro returns to infuse the album with her own unique style, while current Wedding Present bass player Melanie Howard takes over the lead vocal duties on a beautiful version of ‘At The Edge Of The Sea.’ Last, but certainly not least, Amelia Fletcher—backing vocalist on George Best and Bizarro—also returns to the party! As on the first volume, each musician recorded and filmed their parts at home and, as before, it is fascinating to see how stripped-back arrangements bring out different aspects of these brilliant songs.

***BACK IN PRINT!!! "The 1980 release of Catholic Boy, along with the re-publication of his cult-classic book The Basketball Diaries, shot Jim and his band into the international spotlight. Catholic Boy, named the second-most-popular album of 1980 by BAM, is now considered one of the last great punk albums. Jim appeared with his band on the variety program Fridays, he was interviewed by Tom Snyder, and he was featured on the MTV series The Roots of Rock, hosted by Lou Reed. Cover stories appeared in Newsweek, New York, Creem, Interview, Melody Maker, Stereo Review, Rolling Stone, Variety, and Penthouse. Playboy even printed a cartoon in which the punchline was, "Ever since the advent of Jim Carroll, 'I'm a Catholic junkie poet' seems hipper than 'What's your sign.'" Edition of 500 copies.

Faraquet

Anthology 1997-98
Dischord

***FARAQUET began as a side project featuring SMART WENT CRAZY members DEVIN OCAMPO and JEFF BOSWELL, along with CHAD MOLTER. When SWC broke up, Faraquet stepped up as a full-time band and started playing more shows, releasing a couple of singles as well as appearing on a split CD with Akarso. After seeing Faraquet a few times around town, Fugazi invited them to do some shows on a short tour through the south. Soon after the band recorded with J. ROBBINS at Inner Ear Studio and released The View from This Tower in November of 2000. After some brief touring later that year the band broke up in 2001. In 2003 Devin and Chad reunited to form MEDICATIONS with Chad moving from drums to his native instrument, bass. Collected here are the songs the band recorded for various singles and split releases, all remixed by Ocampo and remastered by CHAD CLARK. Working on this project rekindled the bandmembersʼ interest in playing the songs and the band reunited for a Brazilian tour in 2007 and plan to continue to perform periodically in the future. LP version includes a free MP3.

***Knife in the Water's unique mix of bleak Texas pop and country creates the perfect soundtrack for downing a fifth of bourbon alone in your car, parked outside your ex's house in the dead of winter. You also may or may not be loading a gun. With a subtle blend of organ, guitar, pedal steel, bass and drums, they conjure the barren stretches of Texas plains, the faces in dusty bars and the smell of cheap perfume and sleazy motel rooms.  An Austin five-piece with an academic background in avant-garde minimalism and blood-bucket honky tonk, Knife in the Water is capable and serious in executing their boundary-blurring vision of unusual modern American sounds. The band is comprised of Aaron Blount (vocals, guitar), Laura Krause (vocals, Hammond organ), Bill McCullough (pedal steel), Mark Nathan (bass) and Cisco Ryder (drums), all Texans by birth.  Crosspross Bells finds them moving into more psychedelic-abstract territory than their previous long-players, Plays One Sound and Others and Red River. A resigned spiritual feel is evident on "Crosshair Chapel," and "From the Catbird Seat" bears the lysergic influence of the Thirteen Floor Elevators. The five songs on this EP share the themes of indifference and decay, and find a strange natural calm in both states.  With several US and European tours under their belt, including stints with Calexico and Rhythm of Black Lines, the band is scheduled to crawl the US again this March/April with NYC's Mendoza Line.

Dreams Of Dysphoria by Vacuous

Vacuous

Dreams Of Dysphoria
Dark Descent

London’s Vacuous finally present their debut album to follow the magnificent 2020 EP Katabasis. Greeting the listener along with the equally gloomy cover-art is an array of spectral and atmospheric death metal that is haunting beyond the nightmarish depths of the human mind. Perhaps owing to their fixation on the human psyche, or the equally inescapable reality their music conjures with contorting riffs, rock-solid drumming and bellowed vocals, chasms of atmosphere are opened to pour one’s own psyche into. One of the most unique things about Vacuous is their ability to play such bludgeoning, heavy music while retaining a very anguished emotional side, lending massively to the cataclysmic ambience of Dreams Of Dysphoria. The outcome of this is music is sonically punishing. From eerily dragging moments of graven doom through to the churning malice of sickeningly twisted fury, there is nothing but charnel brilliance on display here in a truly diverse platter of hostilities. While one could wrongfully assume that there is only simplicity to be found in this style of music, Vacuous have an utterly unique, warped way of writing their songs that is like no other. From the gloomier moments to the gut-wrenching hooks, there is always something slightly off-kilter here that is disquieting and unfamiliar. This feverish and unwelcoming side of the music is hard to shake, which gives the album a genuinely disturbing factor while the absolutely ferocious death metal core is never lost, nor anything short of thrust upon oneself. It would be an easy...

The same crew as the boundary pulsing improvisation record Bent Arcana has made a trajectory shift and picked up Ben Boye along the path. The aptly-named Moon-Drenched is the second installment from these sessions and keeps a heavy-lidded late night perspective on things as it eases from the somewhat familiar liminal twilight of skittering hues of black-blue and snaking street groove, to fizzing off into the ether in pursuit of lunar prism beams heretofore unseen. The more rhythmically dialed bits here have a lysergic halo of strangeness to them, and the wispy bits between are spun of iridescent gossamer. It sounds like a frizzled message from a future just filthy with guitar hoots echoing off of neon-splattered high rises, oil-slicked waterways and skittering digital beasts. For Castle Face’s money this is the strangest slice of this last bunch of John Dwyer and his crew’s improvisations.

Die Tödliche Doris was born out of West Berlin’s lively post-punk community in the early ‘80s. Along with Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria, Sprung Aus Den Wolken and Frieder Butzmann, Die Tödliche Doris ranks amongst the Geniale Dilletanten – which roughly translates as “ingenious dilettantes” – who sought to democratize cultural productions beyond the grip of both Western capitalism and GDR socialism. The Geniale Dilletanten became synonymous with a free-for-all approach to music, film, painting and performance where participants encouraged raw expression through provocation and experimentation. Wolfgang Müller and Nikolaus Utermöhlen founded Die Tödliche Doris in 1980, presenting the public persona of Doris as a constantly shifting entity that deliberately engaged the contradictions of the human condition. The band often referenced themselves in the third person singular, alluding to Doris as a fully-formed female character with explosive, colorful emotions. For her debut album – originally released on Zickzack in 1982 and playfully titled " " (that is, blank space surrounded by quotation marks) – Doris most closely entertains the notion of a typical rock band with drums, bass and guitar. Produced by Neubauten’s Blixa Bargeld, the thirteen songs presented here are disquieting lullabies of profound anxiety, savage and primitive deconstructions of German polka and manic lacerations of punk minimalism: all reflections of the many and fractured personalities of Doris. This first-time vinyl reissue includes a reproduction of the original 24-page booklet. Limited edition repress of 500 copies on black vinyl.

Boston Spaceships' Zero to 99 is quintessential Pollard, a record that holds its own alongside widely acknowledged classics like Guided By Voices' Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under the Bushes Under the Stars. One gets the sense that Pollard is having the most fun he's had in decades, before he was pulled reluctantly from obscurity and thrust into the limelight with GBV in those heady, post-Nirvana mid-1990s. The Boston Spaceships have not only landed; they're conquering the goddamn planet. "Is everybody happy now?" Pollard defiantly screams on the opening track, as if he knows this is this record that longtime fans have been waiting for. So it's perhaps ironic that he confirms these suspicions with track two, "How Wrong You Are," an anthemic Pollard insta-classic that proves quite quickly just how right listeners are to get excited. From the moment the first chorus begins, Pollard digs his hooks in deep and never lets go, culminating in a raucous sing-along reminiscent of the "You are forgiven" refrain in The Who's "A Quick One While He's Away." Zero to 99 barrels like a freight train from there, delivering track after track of vintage Pollard pop rock, with a band more than up to the task of helping to fuel the engine. From the Buzzcocks-esque guitars on "Found Obstruction Rock 'n' Rolls," to the Keith Moon-ish, Tommy-era drums of "Question Girls All Right," to the McCartney-like bass riffs on "Trashed Aircraft Baby" that would fit right in on Abbey Road, Zero to 99 is a...

***The long-awaited full-length from Tommy and The Ohs: Mariposa Gold. Ohs’ mastermind Thomas Oliverio has worked alongside some of the biggest names in music today—but with Mariposa Gold, he takes a sharp turn into the psychedelic reaches of American roots music and the avant-garde. The result is a wild trip through a lavish soundscape, a California of fantasy and heartbreak, where genres and traditions bleed together in “the big surreal.” Guided by Oliverio’s fine-tuned sense of production and melody, Mariposa Gold is lush with arrangements that strive toward new and surprising dimensions. These songs sway like hummable country weepers sent through the looking glass, joining sheer virtuosity, worthy of the best session players, to a distinct experimental sensibility shaped by bluegrass, country, and psychedelia.

***This playfully titled release features David Javelosa (on synth and vocals) along with Meg Brazill (on bass and vocals) plus drummer Todd “Rosa” Rosencrans. Side One features five studio tracks, none of which were included on the band’s 1981 Posh Boy LP, Life After Breakfast. Three of these tracks were recorded in ‘82; there’s no information regarding the provenance of the other two songs. The records’ second side collects five live recordings, capturing Los Microwaves onstage in New York City (The Peppermint Lounge) and Boston as well as at San Francisco’s own I-Beam, a venue that often played host to the band. Those tracks date form roughly the same ear, 1980-83. Sonically the songs variously recall Blondie, Flying Lizards, Gang of Four and a far less dour Human League. Importantly, the band rocks, even when it’s employing a spare drum kit, solid but elemental bass, and monophonic analog synthesizers. The stripped down aesthetics of the group – necessitated by its minimalist instrumental approach – are nonetheless thrilling. Even if you weren’t there in 1980, this’ll take you back.

***With the golden age of Japanese noise all but tarnished and rusted, here is one last chunk of atonal screech before the oxidation is totally complete. Consumers of all things brutally loud, relentlessly dissonant and, most importantly, originating from Japan, will not require an introduction to Incapacitants - the noise duo consisting of Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai. Begun as Mikawa's solo project in 1981 when a homemade noisemaking device called The Mikawa was his prime instrument, evolving to incorporate various concrete sounds, until Kosakai joined and the duo favored the sound of ring modulators and heavily processed Theremins, Incapacitants has always been about "creating pure noise without any abstract musical expression whatsoever." Mikawa states that he hopes to cause his audience to lose the sensation of time. In addition to contributing articles about a number of international noisicians to various Japanese music journals over the years, Mikawa is also a member of Hijo Kaidan, while Kosakai performed with C.C.C.C. and has released a soundtrack of Stan Brakhage's film Of Dogstarman. Apparently uninterested in networking, touring, trading CDRs, appearing on compilations, granting interviews, replying to letters, engaging in any sort of self-promotion, or taking part in the glamorous razzle-dazzle available to all experimental musicians worldwide, Squeerter prefers the solitude of where ever he calls home in the United Kingdom. Sweet Bird Of Youth
Merge

***In ’94 and ’95, ROCK*A*TEENS were a fixture in the Atlanta and Athens scene: KELLY HOGAN towing along her little teacup dog; CHRIS VERENE wearing makeup and pigtails (and a dress, maybe?); and JUSTIN looking like a wet, unfurled flannel shirt. Then there was CHRIS LOPEZ. He was always polite, always cool, but his aloof demeanor underpinned a crushingly shy guy. Who in the hell knew he had this shambolic group the Rock*A*Teens tucked up his sleeve? Flash ahead to 1998. Merge had just released Baby, A Little Rain Must Fall, and around this time, the estimable BALLARD LESEMANN had replaced Chris Verene on drums. Ballard had long been considered the Bun E. Carlos of the Georgia music scene. He had a hard thump on the floor tom, a solid foot on the kick drum, and a flair for being a showman behind the kit. I mean, can you name another drummer who drinks beer during a song? By the time Y2K came along, the band had started work on what would become Sweet Bird of Youth. Chris Lopez composed and recorded the majority of Sweet Bird’s basic tracks on keyboards and guitar at ROB GAL’s studio, and then lugged the tape machine back to their Black Box rehearsal space at the end of Krog Street to finish. Band members Will, Justin, and Lopez would each go in on his own time and add his own flourishes to each track without the others’ knowledge. This unusual hands-off collaboration progressed for...

The Faust Tapes by Faust

Faust

The Faust Tapes
Superior Viaduct

Faust stand among the most influential creative forces to have emerged from Germany in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Along with Can, Agitation Free, Neu! and others, Faust rejected the Anglo-American norms of rock ’n’ roll to start a back-to-basics and uniquely Teutonic revolution in sound—later dubbed by the UK press with the semi-derogatory term “krautrock.” Faust would reach near-mythical status through a series of classic albums recorded between 1970 and 1973 at their secluded Wümme studio. As Dave Segal writes in the liner notes, “There’s no consensus about which Faust album represents their zenith. But a survey of the group’s fans would likely find the collage-heavy messterpiece The Faust Tapes triumphing. Its freewheeling, jump-cut nature and unlikely earworm moments conspire for more what-the-fuck epiphanies per minute than just about any other record about which Krautrocksampler author Julian Cope has raved.” Comprised of twenty odd tape-manipulation experiments and freak-out jams, The Faust Tapes stashes away some of the band’s best-known songs. “Flashback Caruso,” with its delicate acoustic guitar and Rudolf Sosna’s airy vocals, could easily have appeared on So Far or Faust IV, while on “J’ai Mal Aux Dents,” Jean-Hervé Peron’s playful lyrics and this ecstatic, era-defining riff perfectly represent Faust’s magical mischievousness. This first-time domestic release of The Faust Tapes on vinyl reproduces the original sleeve design, featuring artwork by Bridget Riley.

Malmö multi-instrumentalist Mattias Lagerkvist spent time in short-lived neo-Harmonia trio Cosmic Letters (alongside Martin Herterich of Sand Circles) but since 2012 his primary focus has been swirling, long-form tape delay odysseys issued under the name Ekolali. Previous releases have explored minimalist solarium drone (Vår Värld I Fossil, via Skeppet’s Kosmisk Vag imprint) and tropical kraut psychedelia (Tropisk Hägring) but Igor is his first inspired by, and centered on, guitar. A single 40-minute piece, the track flowers from ghostly electric haze into a glowing wormhole of looped hand-drums, phasing textures, and Space Echo-soaked riff abstractions, before receding to blank, haunted gauze for a full five minutes, only to gradually return for a final swooping arc of percussive kosmische freefall. In scope, depth, and functional hypnosis, the recording stands apart and above his prior creations, hinting at unknown pleasures in future days. The title “comes from the name me and my girlfriend gave a limping hooded crow; he lived in the parks of central Malmö, and we spent last summer feeding him.” Artwork designed by Britt Brown. Mastered by Alex Nagle.

Over the years, Chicago doom / noise band Lord Mantis have made a name for themselves within the underground metal scene alongside fellow local metal bands like The Atlas Moth and Yakuza. Their last album, Pervertor (Candlelight Records), brought them recognition within doom and even black metal circles, assisted by the fact that the band features current and former members from Indian, Nachtmystium, Abigail Williams and Avichi.  With their third album, Lord Mantis present their most devastating and triumphant work to date. Death Mask is a much darker, doomier and more experimental offering destined to bring further recognition to Lord Mantis among the doom / black / noise metal elite, who will herald them as one of the best and most twisted underground metal bands hailing from America.

Wait, is this a new band? We've positioned this incredible debut LP along with our Archival series batch for good reason, as FIRST BASE are one of the purest bands you're likely to come across, a true pop milestone so authentic and airtight, you'll swear you've heard these chords before. Originally one of the 'mystery bands on MySpace" from the mid-2000's, FIRST BASE released a string of much loved singles & EPs but kept a low profile despite being an active performing band in their hometown of Toronto, but it wasn't their intent to be anonymous. If you'll recall, they gained a wider appreciation after Personal & the Pizzas covered their iconic "Nobody Makes My Girl Cry But Me" which pushed them further onto the underground pop radar, and they returned the favor by covering " I Don't Feel So Happy Now" on their last EP. But affiliations aside, FIRST BASE are going to leave a deep scar on your world, and they'll be dumping sugar and syrup deep in those wounds with every repeated listen of this incredible pop debut. Like Jesus & Mary Chain fronting the Ramones, covering Joey Levine, FIRST BASE are pure honey-dripping salvation from the sadistic world we're trapped inside, a true ray of sunshine on an otherwise cloudy day, just try to not melt away.

***Punks on Mars is Ryan Howe, the artist formerly known as Luke Perry. Along with past and present Zoo Music artists such as Crocodiles, Dum Dum Girls and Dirty Beaches, Howe creates his own sonic world, but according to Altered Zones, his is one where “ambitious, full-band stadium swagger... sounds like it’s being re-directed live from Mars.” The four-song Hey! Tiffany EP is issued in a limited edition of 500 copies on black vinyl.  “The Damned’s ‘New Rose,’ Generation X’s ‘Kiss Me Deadly’ and now this—the latest entry into the paedo-punk canon comes courtesy of sicko Luke Perry... First Thought Best Thought by Russell, Arthur

Russell, Arthur

First Thought Best Thought
Audika

***BACK IN STOCK!!! A collection of out of print instrumental and orchestral compositions, along with 45 minutes of previously unreleased material from the late ARTHUR RUSSELL. Initially intended to be performed in one 48-hour cycle, “Instrumentals” was in fact only performed in excerpts a handful of times as a work in progress. The legendary performances captured live in New York at The Kitchen and Franklin St. Arts Center include the cream of that era’s downtown new music scene including ERNIE BROOKS, RHYS CHATHAM, JON GIBSON, PETER GORDON, GARRETT LIST, ANDY PALEY, DAVE VAN TIEGHAM, and PETER ZUMMO. Included here are the previously unreleased “Instrumentals” Vol. 1 along with “Instrumentals” Vol. 2 that have been out of print for over twenty years. Originally released in 1984, sections of “Instrumentals” Vol. 2 were incorrectly mastered at half speed, and have been now corrected for this compilation. “Reach One” is one of Arthur’s earliest compositions dating back to 1973. The hypnotic soundscape was written and performed for two Fender Rhodes pianos, and is previously unreleased. One of the holy grails in Arthur’s discography, “Tower Of Meaning” is a beautiful and stunningly moving orchestral work. Conducted by the late JULIUS EASTMAN, “Tower Of Meaning” was originally released in a limited private edition of only 320 copies. “Sketch For The Face Of Helen” shares only the same title as the previously released excerpt from 1981. Inspired by his work with friend and composer Arnold Dreyblatt, this previously unreleased version was recorded with an electronic tone...

Bay Area beacon Michael Claus operates from an overtly Pacific perspective in his house and techno constructs, shaping fog and bass along shorelines of elusive rhythm. Though active since 2004 he’s only in the past few years begun issuing tracks under his own name to the public domain, the latest collection of which goes furthest in embedding amorphous acid and cloud-soft synths into introspective coastal jack. Memory Protect maps eight hazed designs sourced from three years of work, misting the difference between movement and meditation, atmosphere and anticipation. Past collabs with Nackt hinted at a subtle touch for hypnosis and heightened sensory environment but here Claus captures his essence in its freest, most fluid state. Bodies of water, oceans of memory – what collects, continues. Recorded in San Francisco, 2014-2017. Mastered by Matt Tammariello.

Quiet Rooms by Deison

Deison

Quiet Rooms
Aagoo

***A figure in the avant garde noise and electronics underworld for over 20 years, DEISON’s music has appeared on split-releases alongside Thurston Moore, Scanner and KK Null. On Quiet Rooms, the experimental artist builds four enchanting ambient soundscapes from field recordings of empty hotel rooms. Delicately layered and processed, these lonely urban soundtracks evoke powerful tensions between serenity and alienation. In the he ethereal opener,” Room 1” Deison has captured the anxiety of isolation. Drones builds to such dystopian density that the sounds of our world become science fiction. In “Room 3” , with the inclusion of distinguishable ambient hotel noises, Deison listens in on forgotten stories trapped in the walls. Doors open and close, phonecalls fail to reach their recipient, a distant cat meows. These are the intimate moments and mysterious lives of hotel guests. Further adding to the tension of this powerful release is the 16-panel poster designed by BAS MANTEL. Lock yourself into these stationary images and slow moving sounds. Spend time in Deison’s Quiet Rooms and you will never look at an empty hotel room the same again.

Vessels Of Light And Decay by Indesinence

Indesinence

Vessels Of Light And Decay
Profound Lore

Formed in 2001, London’s Indesinence is one of the few UK death / doom bands (alongside Esoteric) that upholds the classic tradition spearheaded long ago by the likes of Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride—forefathers of the genre who have since shed their roots and explored different styles. Taking influence from the aforementioned British Big Three (most notably early Paradise Lost) along with other luminaries such as Disembowelment and Skepticism, Indesinence has generated quite the reputation in their homeland.  With a career that spans twelve years, the group has put out only a handful of releases: the Ecstatic Lethargy demo, their Noctambulism full-length (Goat of Mendes Records), and Neptunian compilation EP. Vessels of Light and Decay, Indesinence’s long-awaited sophomore album and their first release since 2006, is a full-frontal assault in the spirit of Celtic Frost, Swans, Demoncy and Barclay James Harvest that solidifies their legacy in the death / funeral / doom metal movement. Beautifully packaged in a deluxe hardcover digibook, it is set to make a statement as one of the top albums that the genre will offer all year.

***Oduor Nyagweno is one of the last great elder players of the nyatiti, the eight stringed lyre of the Luo people from along the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. This is a collection of recordings done by Michigan based freak musician Dr. Pete Larson on his cell phone during their weekly lessons. Featuring a range of nyatiti songs, from traditional to modern, songs of heartbreak, tribute songs, salacious songs of randy happenings and musings on life, this could be one of the most comprehensive collections of material from one of the greatest practitioners of the traditional musical arts.

When Molly Nilsson began recording her second album Europa in 2009, the world seemed to be at a turning point and she along with it. In the aftermath of a global financial crash, at the dawn of a new decade, the Stockholm-born, Berlin-based singer was busy molding her songwriting into an idiosyncratic, personal mythology that would take her to every continent, speaking directly to hearts in every corner of the globe. The first album on her own Dark Skies Association imprint, the first recorded in her home studio The Lighthouse, Europa broke new ground for Nilsson at the time. But also it spoke earnestly to the world about an idealism, an openness and hope that has not dimmed in the eleven years since its release. Europa contains the songs of a young, idealistic songwriter coming to terms with her genius for cutting to the chase, saying it as it is and, most importantly, as it should be. Over ten years on the artist’s vim and urge for...more.

His offer took me by surprise, as the Child of Microtones imprint wasn’t known for keeping a stable outside the Tower axis.  Nevertheless, I hit my flanger with some pot cleaner and headed north to Guilford, relishing the idea of my own edition of 99. The recording process was country-simple: I spent the day and night riffing in the skyhouse while MV massaged the signal on its path from dov electronics to Tascam.  No prepared material; I just played what I felt, depending on the Slopbucket quotient, and tried to serve up enough raw meat to render a COM-worthy loaf.   EE furnished me with an exquisite sruti bedrock for the Fender-driven ragas.  When frets were fried we adjourned to McNeill’s, where, incidentally, I was hired on the spot to deliver...

***CHICOS DE NAZCA are yet another psychedelic product of Santiago’s underground movement, formed in 2010 by guitarist and vocalist FRANCISCO CABALA to run alongside his full time band LA HELL GANG. As part of Chile’s prolific BYM Records collective, Chicos De Nazca benefit from a fluid line-up of musicians who appear across the band’s different albums: IGNACIO RODRIGUEZ (La Hell Gang), JUAN PABLO RODRIGUEZ (FOLLAKZOID), MARTIN AVENDANO (DELTA 21) and CARLOS CABALA have all been part of the Chicos clan at various points. Chicos De Nazca have released three official albums (on BYM Records and Hozac Records) and two unofficial ones, utilizing tape recording, analog effects and endless layers of guitars to build their atmospherics sounds. The group’s characteristic gentle and psychedelic repertoire—in which the rhythm and keyboards are essential to keep the songs afloat—owes a bedt to the generation of rock bands that sprung from the post-acid house fever of 1988 in Chicago and England. Utterances into a dictophone from a backdoor man hiding in the closet as the husband arrives home. The tales plod along in whispers, accompanied by defined guitar interplay, punctuated piano and snappy drums. Nearly every accent of guitar seems present. Fragile flamenco plucks, fuzz-to-the-front fumblings onto smooth lyrics of a detective attempting to resolve his own crimes. Vocals and acoustic guitar were recorded by Greg Weeks. The arrangements, instrumentation and production were lovingly handled by Jonathan Wilson. Ilya Monosov is a member of Shining Path and Monosov/Swirnoff duo. While those musics were often meant to be visceral and joyous, Sailor Man presents whispers from one person to another, ruminative meditations on loss of places and people.

Groove Club Vol. 3 - Cambodia Rock Intensified
Lion Proudctions

***Recorded in raw, bare bones conditions, mostly live and with traditional Cambodian instruments finding their place alongside found keyboards or guitars, the music of the Khmer rock musicians transformed the nightlife of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh—and many years later seduced countless listeners around the world with their groovy sound. The rise to power of the anti-Western, fanatical Khmer Rouge in 1975 caused drastic and permanent changes for Cambodia. These years saw social upheaval in the form of massive famines, selective executions and a brutal campaign of genocide responsible for the deaths of an estimated two million Cambodians, many in the notorious “killing fields.” Even the most famous and beloved Khmer musicians could not escape. SINN SISAMOUTH (“the Emperor of Khmer Music”), ROS SEREYSOTHEA (“The Golden Voice of the Royal Capital”), and PAN RON met their deaths at the hands of the Khmer Rouge. The music of these honored musicians and others live on in this exclusive 2xLP edition, assembled with much love and respect for the artists who made the Khmer rock scene as thrilling as we find it to be. The music is wild and anarchic, rhythmic and undulating, sometimes sweet and lyrical, but always moving. Cambodia Rock Spectacular! captures that deep soulfulness ingrained in the best music; and along with its sister album, Cambodia Rock Intensified!. It is perhaps the most definitive collection of classic Cambodian rock music to appear on the scene to date.

"I'm considering, I'm considering, a move to Gothenburg... Alongside being in possession of the last great previously untaken band name, Treasury of Puppies arrive with a debut album that adds increasing cogency to the argument that Sweden is producing the most interesting new music in the world right now, with Gothenburg its spiritual point of convergence. The association with Förlag För Fri Musik provides ideal context (possibly even the inspiration, given how central the label is to modern Swedish music?) for the music of Charlott Malmenholt and Joakim Karlsson, which finds a midpoint between the late 80s/early 90s scorched earth underground of Siltbreeze & Xpressway and a more European tradition of avant / neo folk volksmusik, speaking as much to the haunted music box melodies of Brannten Schnurre as it does Current 93s horror of the countryside. Is this Sweden's hidden reverse? Or maybe this is just Sweden? You could resurrect a church inside this sound, devotional music that draws you in siren-like, the alternating sing-speak vocal deliveries both lullaby and gothic harbinger of... SOMETHING UNKNOWN. Can you levitate all the way to Gothenburg?" - World Of Echo

So Long To Farewell
Shrimper

The twelfth studio record by Refrigerator expands the line-up to five with the addition of Mark Givens from WCKR SPGT on second guitar.  Along for the ride are guest appearances by legendary singer Claudia Lennear (vocals on the first single “Broken Glass Shore”), Shrimper Records stalwart Franklin Bruno, and the additional hand of Scott Solter, who mixed the record, which rests in a gorgeous sleeve with artwork by Jean Smith. The lovely live bleed of a band playing together in one room—guitars spilling onto the drum tracks, cymbals biting into the feedback from the amps—captures the live sound of Refrigerator as never before on record as caught by engineer Steve Folta.     There are two physical versions of the record, one on black 160 gram vinyl, as well as a deluxe edition, available on green and white swirled vinyl that couples a bonus CD with six tracks to a fifty page Bamboo Dart Press chapbook that features drawings, short stories, photographs, lyrics and essays by the band, in an edition of 150 copies.

Formed in 2008, Vancouver, BC’s Auroch are poised to bear the flag of Canadian death metal chaos alongside likeminded bands of the new generation Mitochondrion (vocalist / guitarist Shawn Haché and live-lineup bassist Sebastian Montesi both play in Auroch), Antediluvian and Chthe’ilist. It’s a tradition stretching from the legendary and still-active Gorguts back to the mid-’90s heydays of Cryptopsy and Kataklysm. Auroch released their debut From Forgotten Worlds in 2011 on Poland’s Hellthrasher Productions. That album’s insane musical approach to violent, technical death metal is present on its followup, Taman Shud, albeit in a darker, deadlier manifestation. Here the band truly makes their mark upon the death metal scene as one of North America’s most brutal and musically proficient acts. The release is preceded by the limited-edition Seven Veils 7-inch EP (Graceless Recordings), and the Auroch is scheduled to play this year’s Killtown Deathfest, Europe’s premiere death metal festival, and Incubate fest; live assaults in Canada and the US are imminent.

Parts Unknown by Hydromatics, The

Hydromatics, The

Parts Unknown
Bang

***The Hydromatics feature a genuine Detroit legend in the form of Scott Morgan, from Sonic's Rendezvous Band (alongside the MC5's Fred "Sonic" Smith). Morgan formed the Hydromatics alongside Nicke Royale (The Hellacopters) and guitarist Tony Slug (Loveslug) in 1998 and released an awesome debut album in '99 called Parts Unknown that revisited the Motor City rock sounds of yesteryear in the form of a modern-day power punk rawk outfit, which is now finally being reissued. The album starts out with a burning remake of "Earthy" from the Sonic´s Rendezvous Band and it continues to smoke all the way thru. No ballads. Morgan sings his ass off and the band provides much sonic firepower to back up his massive vocal gusto, switching gears effortlessly between kick ass hard rock and smoky soul. It's a potent cocktail for sure and one that fans of this genre would be foolish to pass up on. Not for diehard punk or metal fans, this is a treat best enjoyed by cats who like to rock n' roll and dig the swingin' sounds of the '60s—albeit as pounded through walls of Marshals and a thick curtain of horns and noise. Absolutely necessary for fans of Sonic´s Rendezvous Band, MC5, Stooges, The Hellacopters, Bored!, and Tony Slug (Loveslug).

Beat Sessions Vol. 12 by Oog Bogo

Oog Bogo

Beat Sessions Vol. 12
Shout Recordings

***"Oog Bogo is a Los Angeles based outfit oozing from the deviant mind of songwriter Kevin Boog. Boog, along with a cohort of co-conspirators, dissolve a myriad of influences from rock and punk’s outer fringe into a sodium bicarbonate solution. Heat is applied to the mixture until it congeals into a highly potent and smokable material whose idiosyncratic vocal harmonies and manic, unhinged guitar work push and pull against an unrelentingly in-the-pocket rhythm section. This tape, the 12th edition of Shout Recordings’ nefarious Beat Sessions, closely replicates the band’s live dynamic. Tracked at Golden Beat Studios in Los Angeles by Mike Kriebel and Ty Segall, the release features a collection of songs reimagined and reverse engineered from the perverse home recordings of Boog featured on the band’s previous three releases. Recorded immediately after a tour of America’s West Coast and featuring Shelby Jacobson (gtr), Kriebel (gtr), and Marley Jones (dr), the arrangements are refined in a way that only the road can and these 11 songs erupt from the speaker. The performances here are focused, sharp, and completely disturbing."

Enlightened In Eternity by Spirit Adrift

Spirit Adrift

Enlightened In Eternity
20 Buck Spin

Spirit Adrift refuses to slow down. With Enlightened In Eternity, Nathan Garrett, alongside drummer Marcus Bryant, has created yet another monument to the timelessness of heavy metal. And while this album builds on the sizable foundation established by previous releases, it also sets itself apart in formidable new ways, widening the scope of what Spirit Adrift can be. What this band has mastered, and where others have failed, is the ability to invoke the power of metal’s past, whether it be the ’70s, ’80s or even the ’90s, as one hears here, without ever feeling throwback or “retro”. Spirit Adrift urgently represent the sonic and emotional zeitgeist of 2020. Enlightened In Eternity carries the same enormous magnitude of the most significant metal records of every era, but Garrett has carved out his own place among the greatest of songwriters, by crafting uniquely classic and instantly recognizable songs. Vocally, Garrett again showcases an obvious evolution of his already high-level ability with more soaring soul and snarling venom injected into his classic metal form. The gorgeous guitar leads, melodies, harmonies and unforgettably heavy riffs benefit from a huge, timeless production quality. Bryant has elevated his drumming to new levels of intensity and tasteful subtlety. And as always, the tracks remain imprinted on the mind long after the album has finished. Whether it’s the ever-expanding catalog of incredible albums and songs or the searing live performances, the dominance of Spirit Adrift upon the current heavy metal landscape is now undeniable. And while Enlightened...

Une Cartographie Ideale by Magnetophonique

Magnetophonique

Une Cartographie Ideale
Not Not Fun

In 2011 Charles Belpois and Baptiste Martin became roommates in Dijon, France and began making music, both together and alone. The solo projects they birthed – Magnétophonique and Les Halles, respectively – share a similarly introspective mood, vignettes of emotive, smeared ambience conjured from private communions with tape hiss, loop stations, and bleached keys. The label they founded, Carpi, issued many of their early recordings (typically in editions smaller than 50) but ceased operations in 2015, with Belpois’ last release coming out on defunct Mexican imprint Dept Tapes the year before. Une Cartographie Idéale collects 12 gems from the Magnétophonique catalog to map a nuanced portrait of his evocative mirage exotica, wavering between bliss and abandonment, paradise and prison. Isolation and island fantasy intermingle in bewitching delirium, the sound of waves and tropical birds refracted through heat-stroked haze while melting cassettes unspool degraded melodies into lost horizons. Escape is heaven – until it isn’t; in the artist’s words: “You’ll never belong here.” Recorded in Dijon and Lyon, 2011-2014. Remastered by Alex Nagle.

Freshly minted and naturally forged in free thought, UU emit a stash of ten reductive ear worms. Common restraints do not factor into this equation, their self-titled debut finds them grappling with the absurdity of life through a hazy lens. View From This Tower
Dischord

***REISSUED AND REMASTERED!!! FARAQUET began as a side project featuring SMART WENT CRAZY members DEVIN OCAMPO and JEFF BOSWELL, along with Devin's high school friend CHAD MOLTER. Faraquet stepped up as a full-time band after the demise of SWC and started playing more shows, releasing a couple of singles as well as appearing on a split CD with Akarso. Due to their non-traditional time signatures and off-kilter arrangements the band was often described as “math-rock”—a description they never warmed up to. Faraquet felt more aligned with the Minutemen and both the passion of their live performance and their advanced sense of melody set them well above and apart from the basement scientist crowd. The View from This Tower was recorded by J. ROBBINS and released in November of 2000. In 2003 core Faraquet members Devin and Chad reunited to form MEDICATIONS, who continue to release new music on Dischord Records. Remastered from the original tapes. LP includes a download.

West Philly’s avant-R&B up + comer Mhysa makes a big impression with fantasii, her first album proper following dispatches with NON and a lauded mixtape alongside chukwumaa as SCRAAATCH for The Fader. Think Klein’s freeform R&B structures riddled with Rabit-like production tics, and you’re in grasping distance of the fractious but idiosyncratically coherent styes inhabited by this highly intriguing addition to the vanguard of new music from the fertile margins of American music and society.  Against a refreshing general lack of broken glass or gunshot samples, the self-described ‘Black queer femme cultural producer, sound designer, womanist + Diva’ animates swirling, impossibly balanced structures with a tearaway imagination, keening from vaulted, pitch-shifting gospel in Special Needs Intro to a multi-dimensional, abstract grime cover of Prince in the course of 11 songs.  The Klein comparisons only end where she tends toward collage, and Mhysa uses original production, but beside that difference, the pair share a unique perception of R&B and church musics as a gateway to other, dreamlike dimensions. From the way she appropriates the ecclesiastic psychedelia of physical church spaces in the reverbstorm of Glory be Black to the rugged ambient inversion of R&B’s usual warmth in the 6minute highlight Bb, or undermining the conventions of club music in the A-grade anti-bangers Strobe and You Not About That Lyfe, she offers a particular example of the contemporary, young, Black and queer experience.  No doubt, Fantasii is a vial addition to the canon of boundary pushing and resetting music...

Next Year At Marienbad by Urinals

Urinals

Next Year At Marienbad
Happy Squid

***The legendary URINALS are back with their third long-player, Next Year at Marienbad. Sure to be another fan sing-along favorite, the record delivers thirteen high-energy tracks showing the Urinals haven’t taken their foot of the pedal. Formed in the first wave of Los Angeles punk in 1978, the Urinals forged a unique path by gigging with bands across the LA punk and post-punk spectrum, from hardcore (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minutemen) to paisley underground (The Last, Rain Parade, Bang[les]) to everything in between (Go-Go’s, X, Savage Republic, Gun Club). They morphed into 100 FLOWERS in the early ‘80s and released a critically acclaimed LP (recently reissued on vinyl by Superior Viaduct) and are back now as the Urinals, playing songs from all phases of their 35 year career. The Urinals are KEVIN BARRETT (drums), ROB ROBERGE (guitar/vocals) and JOHN TALLEY-JONES (bass/vocals). In the past few years the Urinals have headlined festivals from Calgary to Louisville, from Belgium to Beijing. They continue to perform on a regular basis, giving their fans a taste from the past (”I’m A Bug,” “Black Hole,” “Ack Ack Ack Ack”) mixed with songs from their current lineup. They band will be touring the US and Europe to promote NYAM. (STREET DATE - 2/17/2015)

ART FAG 02 CD

Recorded in a disused 19th-century palace on the outskirts of Budapest, Benjamin Wetherill's first album captures the intimacy of a delicate folk idiom along with the innovation of original technique and approach. Wetherill, a Leeds native who has been making his own music for almost a decade, plays intricate fingerpicked guitar passages, and sings with a lilting style unlike anybody recording today. A startling listen for anyone looking for truly talented musicians wholly focused on their own vision.  Jeremy Barnes, A Hawk and a Hacksaw's inventive songwriter, heard Wetherill while touring and offered to produce his debut album. Barnes enlisted his Hun Hangar Ensemble of Hungarian musicians to assist in the recording, delicately expanding Wetherill's songs to include a feather orchestra of light touches and subtle accents, blending sentiments of pre-war European jazz with early English pathos.  The result is Laura, an album as emotional as it is detailed and fragile. Folk music has enjoyed a resurgence of late, but with Wetherill one always seems to get something refreshingly different--true, original music in a manner never quite done before, with the capacity to combine a mystifying sense of the early 19th century with a 20th century outlook. The effect is startling.

Just My Love Ep by Umo Vogue

Umo Vogue

Just My Love Ep
Dark Entries

Umo Vogue formed in Bristol by Stig Manley, Russ Crook and Neil Deamer who were in Bath based ska rock outfit ‘The AT’s’, along with Bristol based singer Debbie Marlow. Neil’s Brother Clive joined the band bringing a fantastic new dynamic to the band on drums, percussion and heavy artillery. The band name is a deliberate misspelling of the ultra-chic Italian fashion magazine ‘L’Uomo Vogue’. After winning the Bristol ‘Battle of the Bands’ in 1982 they were signed to Phonogram and dropped a few months later. They then signed to EMI in ’83 and released their first single ‘Just My Love’ released in early 1984. The second single was ‘Make It Real’ and was never released as the band were culled from the EMI roster in late ’84. For this reissue of their debut single we’ve added 3 bonus tracks, a demo of “Just My Love”, the unreleased follow single “Make It Real” and a bedroom demo “Erotica.” Each song displays ridiculously catchy melodies and innovative electronic rhythms. The drum tracks, a combination of rhythm machines and hand percussion, were mixed down from the 4-track tape used as backing on stage, with the rich slap bass and Roland SH09 synths weaves fluid lead lines in between the harmony vocals. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket and includes an 8-page booklet with photos, notes and press clippings from the band’s archive. “We’re synthetic but...

Punters On A Barge by Spray Paint

Spray Paint

Punters On A Barge
Homeless

***Extracting themselves from the dumpsters of Austin, Texas to create their “paranoid art punk”, No Wave sound—SPRAY PAINT once again present the atonal throb “post-punk workouts” they do so well, this time with some kraut drum beats thrown in for good measure. With two albums on S-S Records in 2013 and Clean Blood, Regular Acid released Oct ’14, all of which appeared regularly on end-of-year lists—Spray Paint’s fourth album, Punters On a Barge, is released on Homeless. Touring the USA with Parquet Courts and Protomartyr and frequent tours of the States that have included two invitations to play Gonerfest (Memphis), plus the annual SXSW gathering in home town of Austin, TX. The band also toured Europe Novemember 2014 and will play Japan/Australia June 2015, see them before the inevitable big time hits.  "If Spray Paint's skull-ringing single 'Day of the Rope' wasn't enough to give you a damn-near stroke, their latest full-length LP Punters On a Barge will bash your head into oblivion. The Austin, Texas trio jack-hammers their way from militant post-punk to industrial noise with clanging guitars and droned-out vocals that could very well summon the robot apocalypse. Be still my cyborg heart."—Noisey  “…the trio’s frantic rants glisten with sweat generated by decades of post-punk workouts. That sweat also pushes them beyond mimicry. The exhilarating execution of their taut-yet-rubbery songs puts Spray Paint’s music squarely in the present tense.” – Pitchfork

HOMLESS 23

Two years ago Maltese musician Rudi Agius aka Jupiter Jax was in London, finishing a PHD in computational biology, awake late and usually alone, when Visions emerged: “My life was literally getting back from the lab, and spending the night (usually till 4-5 AM) making some music… the gloom is something that I love.” Many nights bled into dawn while designing presets for his synths – “sounds that give me feeling” – from which bass lines, beats, and the exploration of “further territory” flowed forth: quartz-clouded, questing house (“Armed For Peace,” “Soul Searching”), foggy breakbeat (“The Deepest”), tranced technoid (“Beyond The Walls”), plus glimmering, ghosted-vocal guest spots by Merwyn Virgo Four, Xosar, and Mykle Anthony. Across eight hazed vistas, Visions never wanes: “Jupiter Jax is about ethereal music.” Deep planetary Italo disco moods dissolved through overcast city voids, haunted by the heartbeat of melancholic early Chicago jack. See beyond the walls. Grid-mapped cloudscape cover art by the artist. Mastered by Alex Nagle.

Talk - Action = 0 - An Illustrated History of DOA by Keithley, Joe

Keithley, Joe

Talk - Action = 0 - An Illustrated History of DOA
Arsenal Pulp Press

***The punk band D.O.A., established in 1978, is considered one of the founders of hardcore punk, alongside such other seminal groups as Black Flag and Minor Threat. Their raw, melodic sound, which drew comparisons to the Clash and the Ramones, has always been matched by the band’s acute political sensibility; known for its uncompromising and outspoken anarchist viewpoints, D.O.A. has been active on behalf of many issues, including anti-racism, anti-globalization, freedom of speech, women’s rights, and the environment. Its slogan, “Talk – Action = 0,” refers to the importance of artists and others who need to “walk the walk” when it comes to their politics. After more than thirty years, D.O.A. remains as active as ever, touring internationally (including a trip to China, the first punk band to do so) and recording regularly (their thirteenth studio album was released in 2010); their fan base now spans three generations. This large-format book is a sprawling visual history of the group by lead singer/guitarist Keithley—made up of vintage photographs, posters, handwritten lyrics, and other various ephemera—that offers a visceral glimpse into the hardcore life of one of the hardest-working punk bands in the business.

The Dark Entries Italo drop continues with Garland’s “Heartbeat”. Like the Alex Molo reissue, this is another 1986 dancefloor bomb produced by Claudio Corradini along with Massimo Filippi. Art Déco singer and songwriter Claudio Valenti conceived of Garland as an outlet for his more dancefloor-oriented material. Inspired by Valenti’s time spent in London seeing Steve Strange (of New Romantic group Visage) DJ at Heaven, “Heartbeat” is an epic Italo number with a heavy New Wave stamp. Déjà vu comes over the listener with melodies evoking Debarge and Bronski Beat, but this passes when the fist-pumping, sing-along-worthy chorus hits. Both the “Song Version” and the “Dance Version” are included on this reissue, with the latter featuring an extended intro and stripped down arrangement. “Heartbeat” was remastered by George Horn. The record is housed in a reproduction of the original sleeve and comes on pink vinyl. Also included is a postcard with lyrics, liner notes, and a photograph. This reissue is dedicated to Claudio Corradini, who sadly passed away in 2021.

Laced With Rumour: Loud-speaker Of Truth by Maxwell Sterling

Maxwell Sterling

Laced With Rumour: Loud-speaker Of Truth
Ecstatic Recordings

“Originating as a multi-channel installation commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary in 2018, the four extended pieces here were recorded at home in Morecambe Bay and then subsequently placed in a room alongside works by Moki Cherry (spouse of Don, mother of Neneh and Eagle-Eye Cherry), Penny Slinger, and a collection of static musical instruments the piece was intended to complement. As a follow-up to Sterling’s 2017 cult hit ‘Hollywood Medieval’ for The Death of Rave, ‘Laced With Rumour’ works with notably more fluid and gently psychoactive structuring that takes in seemingly disparate influences - from Roman mythology to Nottingham’s Lace industry - that result in a sprawling but intimate world of sound, characterised by aetheric arrangements that effectively elide the disciplines of spiritual jazz, chamber music, and art installation into something altogether new. Much like Kara-Lis Coverdale’s converging interests in traditional vs hyper-modern, acoustic vs artificial and synthetic modes of sound, Sterling’s work here is fluid and unorthodox, but rooted in a deep understanding of convention which he proceeds to bend and shape at will. The album opens with a slowly contemplative and almost solemn drift between ‘Laced’, which features samples of Don Cherry weft into its tingling fray of electro-acoustic timbres, alongside the breezy chamber strokes of ‘With Rumour’, the hallucinogenic qualities of ‘Loud-Speaker’, and the darker revelation ‘Of Truth’, which concludes with a transition from mired murk to tones that channel Maxwell’s refined cinematic nous.  One of those albums that's impossible to fully absorb in one sitting, ‘Laced...

Feral Ohms is a power trio from Oakland, California, led by Comets On Fire / Howlin Rain / Heron Oblivion guitar and voice fireball Ethan Miller along with animal drummer Chris Johnson (Drunk Horse / Andy Human) and the loudest bassist in fifteen counties, Josh Haynes (Nudity). The band turns the spatial pyrotechnics and expansive spirit of classic psychedelia inside out, dragging it through the punk rock era kicking and screaming and boils it down into a series of explosions that start at needle drop and end when the record does. They blast pure action and outlaw rock’n’roll joy through relentless, violent musical force, blowing the doors off psychedelic rock and letting loose the raw, wild, high speed feedback wail of something massive careening off the rails and into your ears. This is FO’s debut studio album. Recorded by Eric “King Riff” Bauer (Ty Segall, White Fence, Heron Oblivion), Phil Manley (Earthless, Wooden Shjips) and mixed with scorched Earth policy by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Fuzz)

Versatile visual artist (of key work for Destruction Unit, Chelsea Wolfe + Deafheaven) and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Sawyer along with vocalist Morgan Enos follow two well received LPs and a slew of EPs with further-reaching explorations of Hollow Sunshine's drone/darkwave/pop amalgam. "Burning" is the new EP from the increasingly prolific California duo, and while the previous Hollow Sunshine work explored the landscapes of 1990s atmospheric pop and sludge, "Burning" pushes deeper into both the past and the future. The four new songs feel ancient and coated in precious metals, as Sawyer and Enos tap into the muses of Florian Fricke, Alice Coltrane and Bill Fay to form their most mature and realized release yet. Fans of conemporary, heavy/pop-influenced outfits Jesu and Hum will also rejoice in the beautiful contrast of Sawyer's downtuned guitar mass with Enos' subdued, haunting vocal melodies as the duo deftly wade through songs of helplessness, departure and relief.

(Book Version) Luna by Aliens

Aliens

(Book Version) Luna
Birdman

The book version of Luna is a limited edition of the Aliens' latest masterpiece. This 60-page, full-color hardcover book includes the CD along with copious drawings, photos, poems and lyrics taken from the band's archives. Grab the future in your hands with this guide to the world of the Aliens. The Aliens recorded Luna in an isolated, ramshakle studio in a small Scottish village, embracing their freedom from the major record label machine and exploring each track with focus and willful experimentation. Luna is an ambitious, thrilling, and immensely rewarding album, the sound of the Aliens fully realizing their extra-terrestrial musical vision. Its songs unfold into rolling, expansive sonic panoramas. It's a mesmeric, psych-tinged, honeycomb folk-pop masterpiece that runs free, and has been drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Formed in 2005, these Aliens have history. Between them, they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade: John Maclean and Robin Jones were in the Beta Band, and Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker. "Luna is a psychedelic delight." --Observe Music Monthly "The Aliens boldly aim toward music for the 21st century." --The Word (UK) "An incredible psychedelic stew, a joyride round the galaxy." --NME "A bonafide gem." --Sunday Telegraph (UK) "The real deal, a 70-minute fantasy." --FT (UK)

On The Box: 1979
Pinkflag

***Beyond a few seconds of snatched performance, a micro-interview on Tony Wilson's precursor to So It Goes, and a couple of mime-alongs on Belgian TV, there is no footage of Wire from the '70s beyond one item. Luckily it has been preserved. British viewers never got to see a live performance of Wire on their tellies, but Alan Bangs, who had the late night show on British Forces radio in Germany, crossed over to German-speaking media and by early 1979 was a presenter on RockPalast, an hour-long studio concert slot on WDR, already established as German's most important "serious" rock music show. Wire were old sparring partners of Bangs, appearing on his radio show every time they were anywhere near Cologne.  Although 15th generation VHS copies of the screened parts of this performance have been making the rounds for many years, this DVD is the first time that the complete performance and the never-screened interview have been brought together. “I was guzzling wine at my favorite bar in San Francisco, the Rite Spot, and the entertainment that night was some local opera singers singing along with a big video screen showing a collage of various operatic moments with subtitles. One particular subtitle, ‘Ah! (etc)’ made me laugh, I thought it was a perfect description of life—the joy of existence against the etcetera of it all, the struggle. With a heavy head of rosé it seemed like ecstatic poetry! I scribbled it on a napkin and thought it might make a good title for something” And so the mystery behind the title of Kelley Stoltz’s new record is solved. Less of a mystery is the quality contained therein: after twelve releases and a several more under pseudonyms, Stoltz is the word for “one-man-band-home-recording-pop-songs of idiosyncratic character.” A quick follow up to his more power pop and pub rock LP only Hard Feelings offering in the summer, Ah! (etc) finds Stoltz returning to his sweet spot, writing songs that never were, but should have been in the ’60s and ’80s.  As with other releases, Stoltz makes virtually every noise on the album which was written and recorded in 2019 at his Electric Duck Studio in San Francisco. A few friends popped in to play along: Stoltz former bandmate, Echo & the Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant adds electric guitar to “The Quiet Ones” a sort of Scott Walker lyrical take on strangers and neighbors. Karina Denike formerly of Dance Hall Crashers adds...

Imaginational Anthem IX - Ryley Walker Presents
Tompkins Square

***Tompkins Square label's very first release in 2005 was the acoustic guitar compilation, Imaginational Anthem Volume One. The concept was to showcase new talents alongside first-gen American Primitive guitar legends, a formula that stuck across the first three volumes. Volume Four, released in 2010, featured all contemporary players, giving many folks their first taste of William Tyler, C Joynes, Chris Forsyth and Tyler Ramsey. The label then started farming out curation duties to others : Sam Moss for Volume 5, Chris King for Volume 6 (Origins of American Primitive Guitar), Hayden Pedigo for Volume 7, and Michael Klausman & Brooks Rice for Volume 8 (The Private Press). Tompkins Square recruited label alum RYLEY WALKER to compile Volume Nine. Given his deep Rolodex and exquisite taste, it's no surprise that this comp is probably the most diverse of the series. Nine of the eleven artists were previously unknown to us, so we get to discover new artists just like our label fans do.

Poor Boy On The Wire
Sophomore Lounge

***Over the last decade-and-a-half, C JOYNES has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions. His new release, Poor Boy On The Wire, is his first full album dedicated wholly to the electric guitar. Through a typically wide-ranging set, Joynes exploits the instrument’s potential by placing intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs, wiry electric folk and the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation. However, these explorations of the tones and timbres of close-mic’d guitars and amplification retain an overall coherence and unity through the deliberate use of a limited palette of budget instruments and vintage equipment.

Live Wrong And Prosper by Luke’s Anger

Luke’s Anger

Live Wrong And Prosper
Tigerbeat6

Keeping true to his techno sensibilities (or non-sensibilities?), Live Wrong and Prosper is a full-length-album sized collection of Luke's finest recent work along with some massive exclusive tracks, including an extra special 2010 VIP re-mash of his 2 biggest tracks to date! (see: 'Working on the Floor').  Expect ultra-heavy bass juggernauts in 'Gross Negligence' and 'Bruce Wobbelaar'. Sexy acid swing-time in 'Nice Car' and 'Tombstone Trax' and all out wonk-factor-10 with 'Worried Sid' and 'Beebop Drop' and many more percolating slammers to be discovered!  Fans of the trademark “Luke’s Anger charm” will have a field day with this release, with every track dripping in fat, tasty analogue lushness!
